Sedona was usually early to the family dinners, which some part of her loved having. For the wild behavior she could have, she was sentimental as well. At least where her family was concerned.
She let herself into Teo's house, which she often did, and wondered if she would have to remind him that the family elected to use his house tonight. It was Sedona's idea, really, because she felt bad for Shana. If the girl was going to be kept against her will (Sedona was not ignorant of this fact) Sedona thought she should at least not always feel like a prisoner.
And who in that family could say no to Sedona? She only abused this when she thought it was important.
"Teo?" She called out, closing the door behind her.

Whenever Sedona insisted on using his house for the weekly family dinner, Mateo would convince his housekeeper Lucille to stay overtime and cook dinner for the family. He was not a cook by any means, although, if pressed he could probably make pasta and sauce. What self-respecting Italian couldn't?
So while Lucille was busy making dinner, Mateo had set up the table and set some wine to breathe on the table. He let Shana out of her room and was sitting in the living room with her as he idly flipped through the latest issue of the Daily Prophet.
"We're in here, Dona," he called when he heard his sister's voice.

Sedona made her way into the kitchen first, dropping off some wine and bread, along with a couple jars of oil and vinegar, because she couldn't remember is Mateo kept any. Though what Italian didn't have oil and vinegar in their house? "Hi, Lucille," she said, flashing the woman a smile before she finally went into the room Teo called her from.
The girl was there, and Sedona hated having to pretend like it was normal, like she was there of her own will. "Will you be joining us for dinner, Shana?" She asked. "I hope you do."
As she said this, she made her way over to her brother, sitting on the sofa next to him and kissing his cheek. "How are you, Teo?"

Teo glanced at Shana for a quick moment, giving her a small nod. Since there would be no business discussed at this dinner, he had no problem with Shana attending. He may have been keeping her here against her will, but he didn't want to keep her locked in her room like a prisoner. Besides, she could be a lively presence at times, and would surely brighten up the table with her sparkling personality.
He smiled warmly at Sedona and gave his little sister a quick squeeze. Teo could be cold, but Sedona brought out a warmth in him that few people ever saw. "I'm doing great now that you're here, Dona," he said affectionately. "So, when's Gio supposed to get here? You seen him lately?"

Shana hated the charade as well, and hated when she saw anyone showing Mateo respect or even adoration. Sometimes, she couldn't tell if Sedona knew what was really going or not, and she wasn't sure which situation would be worse.
She glanced at Teo to see if she even could come to the dinner or not. He would always let her know with a subtle shake or nod, and she never questioned him in front of his family.
As much as she wanted to say no, she liked when people were around. She liked someone to talk to, so she smiled faintly at Sedona. "Looks like I'll be joining you."

Sedona nodded. "Good," she told Shana, then turned her warm smile on her brother.
"Gio was at home last I checked... guess whose back in town?" She asked. "Kate. Remember her? Anyway, I think Gio was catching up with her. I told him to invite her and to not be late... so we'll see when he shows up. What are we having tonight?"
She felt energetic today. She also hadn't had a cigarette in three days and was sort of craving one, but she wasn't about to tell this to Teo. As far as he was concerned, she was still young, naive, and innocent.

The expression on Teo’s whole face changed when she mentioned Kate’s name. Mateo was not a romantic guy and was not given to sentimentality, but Kate… Well, Kate was the “one that got away.” It was for the best, he knew. They both took different paths in life, and neither one was willing to change for the other. It wasn’t meant to be… and yet, in some ways, he still felt as loyal to her as he did to his own sister.
“Katie’s back?” he said, his voice gentling. “That’s great… It’ll be nice to see her again.”
He glanced at Shana. If Kate was coming by… well, Shana shouldn’t be here. There would be questions that he wouldn’t be able to answer. But would Kate even ask them?

Sedona looked between her brother and Shana, and her curiosity piqued immensly. Was there more going on between the two of them than she was aware? She doubted that Shana knew Mateo and Kate's history. But if there was something going on, that meant dinner would be wonderfully awkward and fun to watch.
Her eyes landed on her brother's again, and she simply said, "I told her you were single. She asked." Well, she hadn't asked in so many words, but it was close enough.

Shana;s eyebrows shot up. "Oh. There's a girl involved. Mateo, I'm shocked. Ex girlfriend? I bet she's blonde. She's blonde, isn't she?"
She was teasing him a little, but he didn't really seem like the type to carry a relationship. The odd look in his eyes intrigued her, and she was curious to know more.
"I know that look, too. I'm banished to my room tonight, right?"

Gio arrived later than he first planned. He got distracted, but at least he was going to make it in time to eat. Gio could always be counted to get there on time when there was food involved. He knocked on Teo's door, then let himself in. "Teo," he called as he shut the door behind him. Gio walked into the living room. "Well, it's a party already." He smiled as he saw Teo, Sedona, and Shana.
He had caught the end of Shana's words before he even made a comment. "Why is Shana going to be in her room? Can't she just join us to eat tonight?" Gio raised his eyebrows at his brother. Shana had become somewhat part of family in a way. Of course, you didn't really lock family up in a room, but she had been around long enough.

In his line of work, it was necessary for Teo to control his anger. Yes, he had a temper, but he was usually able to keep it controlled. Many times during meetings, Teo had found himself positively itching to murder someone. But he had worked to control it, so that often he only showed the slightest twinge of annoyance.
Very few things could rattle him now. Unfortunately, Kate was one of them. He looked between Sedona, and Shana, to the newly-arrived Gio, a deep frown creasing his lips.
"You don't need to tell Kate that I'm single," he said, a very slight edge to his voice as he looked at his sister. Even if Kate was back, that didn't mean they were getting back together. The same old obstacles stood in their way, and he hardly thought that Kate's objections to his career choice would have changed after all this time.
He took a breath and was able to turn back to Shana with his lips twisted into a sardonic grin. "And she's brunette, actually."
He wanted to banish her to her room... in fact, he wanted to chase everyone away so that, if Kate really did show up, he could talk with her in private. But what good would that do? He let out a sigh, and, turning away from all of them, replied, "Fine, she can stay out here. And if Kate comes... Shana is a friend of the family who's staying with me for a while. Because you know she'll ask."

Shana frowned. "What if I tell her why I'm really here?" she said, her voice quiet and lacking the conviction that would show she was serious about that thread. But it intrigued her... someone new was coming, and what if she just admitted everything? She would probably earn herself a permanent banishment to her room, but then again... maybe this new person could help her.
"I mean, really. Friend of the family?" She looked at Teo, her eyes narrowed and pretty much ignoring the other two in the room.
(it's usper short.... sorry!)

Because Teo was always so calm, it was easy to forget sometimes that he could be very brutal. He never lost his temper, and, when angered, it was his calm demeanor that could make him so very frightening. Unfortunately for Shana, this was one of those moments.
He simply blinked at her, pressing his lips together while he moved toward her in a few quick strides. His eyes never left hers as he grabbed her by the shoulders and held her there. “Let’s not do or say anything that we might regret,” he said, the smoothness of his voice taking on a menacing quality.
He had been careful never to perform magic in front of Shana, but he was sorely tempted to place her under the Imperious Curse now, in an attempt to keep her quiet. Even though he knew without question that there was no possibility of Kate getting back together with him, he didn’t want to reveal himself as a kidnapper to his ex-love.
“You will keep quiet, unless you prefer to spend the evening in your room,” he said.

Shana's own lips pressed together, and while she returned Mateo's hard gaze, it was very hard not to look away. She wasn't scared of him, though. Intimidated, perhaps, but not scared. She had lived with him for close to a year now, and he never hurt her. In fact, he was even sometimes... well, friendly, if you could call it that. So he wasn't going to scare her into being quiet. And while she knew she might truly regret it afterwards, she was still strongly considering saying something.
"No, of course," she said, her eyebrows raising a touch and her expression deceivingly soft. "I wouldn't want to make things awkward for you at all. Now please, let go of me." It was unfortunate for Mateo that she was so strong willed. A meeker girl would have folded under the gaze of his.

"Teo," Sedona said, trying to pull his attention away from Shana. The girl wouldn't saying anything; if she really planned on doing something like that, why would she have said anything outloud to any of them?
"Come on, let's finish up dinner so that it's ready in case Kate does come." She shot Gio a glance and walked up to her eldest brother, putting a hand on Mateo's arm. She was stuck somewhere in the middle of the whole situation, and figured it was just better if they all pretended that Shana was here of her own free will. Everyone except Shana seemed to go with it, too, though she couldn't blame the other girl.

Teo's expression softened very slightly as he released his grip on Shana's shoulders. The truth was, he was extremely tense at the moment, and it had very little to do with Shana. The idea of Kate coming here had him rattled... and nothing ever rattled him. Kate was the only one that could do it.
"Fine," he said, turning to Sedona. He nodded toward the kitchen, then quickly shot a look at Gio, reminding him to keep an eye on Shana. He then left the room without another word, and didn't speak again until he was in the kitchen with his sister.
"You could have warned me sooner that there was a chance Kate might be coming."

Sedona knew her brother was unhappy, and while he shot Gio a look, she shot Shana a look. The girl should know better not to anger him.
Following him into the kitchen, she crossed her arms over her chest and raised an eyebrow at him. "I didn't think you would be quite so... what's the word... touchy about it, Teo. Didn't you swear there was never going to be anything between you two? I can owl her and tell her not to come, though. Whatever you want."

Teo gave her a look, then walked over to pour himself a glass of wine. He actually wanted something stronger, but he wanted to be in control, in case Kate actually did show up.
"There will always be something between me and Kate," he told her quietly. "Just because we can't be together, doesn't mean there's not something there..."
He sighed, then took a long drink from his glass. "I had no idea she was even in town."

"Yeah, well, you know how Kate is. I had no idea she was in town either until she knocked on the door yesterday. I thought you would have been the first person she saw, so I didn't say anything. And anyway, she's been in town for a couple of weeks... works at the Ministry, now, I guess." Sedona paused here, unsure how to finish this statement to him. He wasn't going to like what she did at the Ministry very much, and Sedona knew it. She'd lie, except she knew Kate would mention it.
"Law enforcement, I think she said."

Mateo actually had a pretty good idea what Kate was doing at the Ministry. He knew a lot more than he had ever revealed to Sedona or any other person in his family. There had, after all, been a reason why he and Kate broke up. It was the same reason why they could never be together.
"I know," he said, his tone oddly dispassionate. "She's an auror. She told me what she was going to do when she left the last time. That's why we can't get back together. And I really don't need reminders that I'm still single. It's better that way... I've told you that before."
