Teo laughed, a rare sound these days. Kate could always make him laugh, especially when they had been deeply involved in the relationship. Listening to her recount the story of stolen kisses and the unexpected dip in the pool made him realize that he really had changed a lot since Kate had left. He always thought he had been just the same person, and maybe deep down he had been. But Kate had brought out the carefree side of him, the side that had been suppressed completely over the years.
He missed it. Merlin, it wasn't even just her that he missed.... it was the person he had been when he was with her. He hadn't exactly been "innocent," but somehow it felt that way.
"Those were good times," he said, and his voice sounded almost wistful for a second, before he hardened his jaw. "But times change."

Times had changed, not enough that Kate didn't notice the hardening of his jaw, or the fact that she knew now he'd be pushing all fond memories from his mind, taking on a more serious note. Kate knew when she had reached her limit with Teo, she always had, probably always would, still she couldn't help but feel a pang for the old days.
He wasn't the only one who had changed, or perhaps she too had always been hard, her brief time spent with the Rossi's seemed like it was ages ago and only a moment, but it was the happiest time of her life. Now she was hardened, she started out hardened, and that's how she was going to end up. Dealing with what she dealt with on a daily basis didn't leave room for being soft.
"They do change..." she agreed, but instead of making everyone depressed with that statment she smiled and sighed wistfully, " So what's everyone been up to?" she asked, it was a lame attempt but one worthy of a smile anyway, and she hoped that graciously one of them would take the line.

Teo fell silent again, but his eyes stayed on Kate. It felt like a lifetime ago when they had been together. He had known, even then, that it was a mistake to pursue her, and to let himself fall for her. But he couldn't help it. Kate had been his one temptation. Sedona was his greatest weakness, but Kate was his temptation. He had always known that it would end, and why.
Even if he'd had a choice, Teo still would have joined the family business. He just didn't fit anywhere else. He couldn't imagine himself working for the Ministry, or teaching at the school, or working in a shop. From the day Sedona had been kidnapped, Teo knew what he was meant to do. And when he let himself get involved with Kate, he knew that he would one day have to choose between her and the business. And he always knew what he would choose. Still, he hadn't expected it to hurt so much to see her walk away... or to see her walk back into his life after all that time.
They couldn't pick up where they had left off, and they couldn't start over again. They were different people now, and he knew that his life would forever come between them. But the old feelings that he'd kept buried were still there, slowly waking from their slumber and making him long for things he couldn't have.
Damn her. Why did she have to come back here? He could forget about her as long as she was away....

Dinner was going alright, Kate felt like she could breathe a bit more, all she had to do was keep her eyes off Teo and she could forget... No. Who was she kidding? She would never be able to forget, and being around him would always be painful. Though she had a great desire to run out of the house, she had a stranger one still to run to him, to melt into him and ease the loneliness she had felt for so long.
