Maia enjoyed working as a seamstress, but sometimes, squinting down at the tiny stitches gave her a headache. You'd never know it by looking at her, though. She was as bright and sunny as ever, humming a muggle tune she'd heard as she walked into the charming little house she owned with her boyfriend Chase.
He would be home soon from his shift at the hospital, and she wanted to make sure the house was comfortable for him. She would never complain about her job, when his was so much harder.
After starting a fire and putting on some soft music, Maia set about making dinner. She was making lasagna tonight, and she wanted to make it perfect for Chase. Often when she cooked, she did it without magic, but she was short on time today, so she used magic to boil the water for the noodles and to heat up the sauce. As a result, it wasn't long at all before the lasagna was in the oven.
Sitting down at the kitchen table, Maia glanced up at the clock. Chase would be home within the hour. She couldn't wait to see him and have him tell her about his day.

If Chase ever heard her say that his job was harder than hers, he would have sat down in front of her and detailed every way in which it was not. He was more than supportive of her, and he loved to come home and listen to her talk about her day. It was something of a routine now that she always asked about his day, and he would brush it off until she would tell him a story or something about hers. He loved that she indulged him, too.
Lately, he'd been a little more subdued, and a little quieter, since the attack. Their home wasn't damaged, thank Merlin, but the streets they walked through day to day served as a reminder of the attack, and he couldn't help but think that he could have lost her that day.
The lives he hadn't been able to save weighed on his mind as well, but he did his best to keep that from her, and when he opened the door on that particular evening, he had a soft smile on his lips, reserved just for her.
"Whatever you're cooking, Maia, smells fantastic," he told her, finding her at the table and kissing her cheek as he took off his cloak.

Maia smiled and got to her feet. It never ceased to amaze her how the very sight of him felt the way it had the first time they had met. She wasn't content with just a kiss on the cheek, and she pulled him closer to her for a kiss on the lips.
"I'm making lasagna," she said brightly. "It should be ready in about 20 minutes. Why don't you go get changed, and I'll pour us some wine, and you can tell me all about your day."

"Sounds fantastic," Chase replied, smiling after she pulled him back for a real kiss. "Godric, I love you."
He'd never know what he did to deserve a woman like her, but he was thankful for it every day.
And there she went, asking about his day already. He gave her a coy little smile. "I'll go get changed, you pour the wine, but I would much rather hear about your day," he told her, kissing her again before he started down the hall. "I garauntee it'll be a thousand times more exciting than mine was."

Maia smiled back. They had lived together long enough to have their little routines, but luckily, they had yet to get boring. Maia loved him almost beyond reason, with all of the fire of her Irish soul. And the fact that they had somehow become the world's cutest couple seemed only right to her. She only wished her parents weren't so disapproving of the fact that she was "living in sin," as they called it.
She was up, pouring the wine, and humming a little tune she'd heard while passing one of the shops in the muggle section of London. She liked to walk through there on her way home from work sometimes, just because she never wanted to be completely removed from the muggle world, like some wizards were. Today she had stopped in one of the clothing stores and had picked up a slinky little outfit that she planned on showing Chase later.
She was still humming as she checked the lasagna, then brought the two wineglasses into the living room to sit down and wait for Chase.

Chase changed quickly into something comfortable, loose pants and a muggle t-shirt, and found himself almost hurrying back to her. He hadn't seen her all day, and woke up too early to say good bye to her that morning, and he missed her.
It was only a few moments before he was back in the room with her, and saw her sitting on the couch. He went to join her, leaning in to kiss her again before he even took his wine glass.
"Merlin, I love coming home to you everyday."

Maia closed her eyes and allowed herself to get lost in his kiss. He always made her feel so warm and protected. When she was with him, she felt dynamic and exciting and beautiful, not like just a common seamstress.
"Mmmm... I love having you come home to me every day," she replied happily. She held him closer, as the frustrations of the day began to close in on her at last.
"Today was such an awful day. We had this wedding party come in for fittings... some snobby pureblood family. They were barking orders at me like I was a child. I bet they treat their house elves better than that. One of them, when I was pinning the dress on her, she made this sudden move and I jabbed a needle into the palm of my hand, and I got blood all over the fabric. You'd think I'd hit them with an Unforgivable the way they were going on about it."

Chase wrapped her up in his arms, just sitting comfortably with her. He loved his relationship with her, that they could be intimate talking about their work days, and he honestly didn't think he deserved her.
He listened about her day and sympathized until she mentioned that she had bled, and he sat up straighter, taking both of her hands in his and turning them over. "Are you okay?" he asked. Her being hurt was the part of the story he focused on, and he wanted to be sure she was all right. He didn't see a wound, though, and settled for kissing each of her palms.

Maia smiled lovingly at him as he began to search for a wound. Always a healer. "I'm fine, I promise," she said. Nevertheless, she closed her eyes as he kissed her palms. "It was just a tiny pinprick. Once they stopped yelling at me, I cleaned it up and healed it myself. But, oh, they were so rude! You know I don't like to speak ill of people, but really, they were pretty awful. I had such a headache by the time they were gone."
She kissed him quickly, then pulled back and looked at him, a contented smile on her face. "But everything is fine now. It always is when you're with me. Now, enough about me. How was your day?"

She obliged him, telling him a story about her day first, so he sighed, knowing it was his turn. He only saved the happy stories to tell her, rather wishing he could shield her from all of the awful people, as she called them, and all the sad stories. He saw too many people die on a regular basis. The looks in their eyes just before they went would have killed Maia, no pun intended.
They looked at him in one of two ways. It was either a look like he had failed them, or they looked at him like he was their savior. Both were equally hard to handle.
"You remember Lydia, right? She's been looking after a little girl that was injured in the attack. She got to go home today, finally."

Maia smiled. "That's wonderful!" she replied. "The little girl's family must have been so happy."
The Hogsmeade attack had been very upsetting to Maia, and she was still incredibly relieved that both she and Chase worked in London and not Hogsmeade. It had been such a horrible event, and so many people had been killed and hurt. The only trouble they'd had was a bit of damage to the left side of the house. Ultimately, they had been really lucky.
"How is Lydia?" she asked. "Something about that girl always makes me so sad."

"Yeah, it was a pretty nice reunion to witness. It's moments like those that remind me the whole world hasn't gone to pot," she said, then smiled and leaned in to kiss her. "Those, and then every moment I have with you."
He leaned back and shrugged. "Lydia's doing all right, I guess. She's been immersing herself in work. She was assigned to the case of the Auror who died, and the MLE seems to be in all the time asking her questions. I don't know... at least she's keeping busy, right?"

Maia smiled against his lips. She felt the same way; whenever he kissed her or held her or just looked at her in that special way, all her worries seemed to disappear. Well, all except one. She'd been having this fantasy lately about marrying him. She kept assuring him that she was OK with not getting married, that she didn't need a wedding ring to know he loved her. But she still wanted that fantasy, that reassurance. Maybe it was a little of the leftover childhood dream of wanting to be a princess, but still... it was hard to shake sometimes.
"Is the MLE guy cute? Maybe they'll get together. I hate to think of her all alone, you know?"

Chase had to refrain from rolling his eyes at her question, and instead smiled. "Yeah, he's a real dreamboat, Maia," he said, clearly joking. Aside from that fact that he would never assess if another guy was cute, he hadn't really paid that much attention to the guy. He was on a case with Lydia, and had never spoken two words to him anyway.
"Lydia will be all right," he assured Maia. "She's a tough girl. She's not really the healer I'm worried about, anyway."
He took it upon himself to act as the father figure around the hospital, making sure they were all okay. He just felt responsible for them.

Maia had only met the rest of the staff a handful of times, but the way Chase talked about them, she felt like she knew them all very well. Each one was a friend, and she worried for each of them. When Grace had died in the attack, Maia grieved with everyone else. Kieran was the one she knew the least, but she had a feeling that was because no one really knew him well. Her impression was that he was a quiet, sensitive soul, who felt things very deeply. It couldn't have been easy for him to lose three loved ones in one horrific day.
"Kieran, right?" she asked gently. "How is he doing?"

"Yeah, Kieran," Chase said, smiling. He was always amazed when she would do that, and it was like she came to work with him every day. She paid attention to everything he said about everyone... maybe he talked about work too much. He'd try to be better, but they were all friends and family to him as well, and it was hard not to worry about each of them.
"I don't know. I mean, he seems like he's holding up all right. I just see all these little cracks in that wall, and I don't know what I'm supposed to do about it. He shouldn't be at work."

"It's so sad," Maia said, shaking her head. "No one should have to lose so many people in one day like that. And Ivy... she was so sweet and full of energy. He must be lost without her. I know I'd be lost if I lost you."
She paused to kiss him. "I hope he'll be OK. You should invite him over one night. Make surer he's getting out once in a while, you know?"

Chase shook his head. "Well, I'm not going anywhere," he assured her, kissing her back. He wondered if she knew how many times he thanked his lucky stars that he had her. He did so often that he didn't know if he ever thought about anything else.
"I'll invite him, but I don't think he'll take me up on it. I'll leave it an open invitation, then."
He leaned back, running a hand through his hair. Merlin, he was tired. It must have been a longer day than he thought.
"I was thinking, we should have some kind of little party or something. Just a small get together for friends. I feel like I spend too much time at work and I'm neglecting everyone. Even you."

Maia didn’t worry so much about how much time Chase spent with her. She knew that he loved her, and that he was always there when she really needed him. She had long become adjusted to being the “wife” of a healer, even if she wasn’t exactly married to him. What troubled her was how tired he seemed to be lately. The situation at St. Mungo’s was pretty rough, and everyone seemed to be working overtime on difficult cases. It was stressful to all of them, and everyone was going to have to figure out new ways to cope with it. So the idea of a party made Maia’s face light up. She was an excellent hostess, and loved nothing better than to entertain. It gave her a chance to show off her cooking skills, as well as her ability at playing matchmaker. She just loved to make other people happy.
“That’s a wonderful idea!” she said enthusiastically. “We could invite your sisters, and Alison, and Ariel, and some of your friends from the hospital… who else were you thinking of?”

Chase couldn't help but smile when her eyes lit up. Seeing her happy like that, or excited, or smiling for any reason always did him a world of good. He loved making her happy.
"We could invite anyone you want. We have the room here for a few people, so I'm not worried about that. I would like to invite Kieran, but I'm not sure he'd come. I was just thinking that it would be nice to have a get together to see some of our friends that we haven't seen in a while. It just feels like we don't have the time anymore, right? Who else would you like to invite?"
He wanted it to be as much for her and the people she knew as it was for him. He actually liked doing the coupley thing when it came to situations like this.
