"Yes, I agree... we should invite him. He seemed like he had a good time at the last one we had," Maia agreed, but her tone was sad. She also knew perfectly well that Kieran would probably decline the invitation. He seemed like a solitary soul by nature. He had attended one of thie precious parties, with Ivy on his arm, of course. Ivy was energetic and vivacious and seemed like the only person capable of drawing Kieran out of his shell. Now that she was gone, it seemed that he was retreating back into that shell, and it would take a lot to pull him out again.
"I suppose it's too soon to try and play matchmaker for him, right? I have a lot of single friends... Ariel's single... And there's Jessica..." She sighed and shook her head. "No... no, it's definitely too soon. But, oh, do you think you boss would come? And maybe bring her husband?"

"Maia, please, whatever you do, do not try to set Kieran up with someone. Ivy was the love of his life... and I can't imagine that he will ever look at another girl that way. It's definitely too soon... I know I'd never look at another girl the way I look at you."
Matchmaking, at this point in the game, would have been disasterous, and Chase knew it. He knew that Maia knew it too, but it was just in her nature to play matchmaker. She generally called relationships long before they ever happened or Chase saw them. He was still waiting to see if she was right about Tim and Adrienne.
"But sure, if we invited her, I think Lindsay would come. I don't care for her husband much, personally, but if we must invite him..."

It would be very hard for her to repress the urge to fix Kieran up with someone, but she knew it was definitely too soon. She wasn't sure if there would ever be a good time. Kieran had loved Ivy deeply, anyone could see it, and Maia wasn't sure he would ever be able to get over that. Ultimately, only Kieran himself would be able to decide if or when he was ready.
"I won't," she said, looking a bit deflated. "I just hate to see someone alone and unhappy. But I'll tell you what.... I'll keep concentrating my efforts on Lydia. I don't suppose you've heard anything about any guys who have been showing any interest in her?"

Chase laughed and rolled his eyes. "You and your matchmaking ways... I don't know how you do it. I would think it's terribly exhausting."
He loved her desire to make everyone happy, though, and kissed her again.
"Lydia... hmmm. She's sort of taken over for Grace in the autopsy department, and I haven't seen much of her. I know there's an MLE officer that's been around, but he's just around on business, I think. You know I don't pry into everyone's personal life."

Maia looked thoughtful for a moment, but brightened when he mentioned the possibility of an MLE officer who had been spending time around Lydia. That had potential. Maia had long thought that Lydia's best chance for romance would be someone who didn't work in the hospital, but since Lydia didn't get out very often, it seemed rather an impossible situation. But an MLE officer... he would surely have to be strong and brave...
"An MLE officer, huh?" she repeated. "Well that sounds promising. I'll have to see if I can find out a little more about him, and if I can give her a little nudge in the right direction. After all, this guy is probably under a lot of stress, too.... Maybe they could both help each other."

Chase just laughed at Maia's response to him. "I don't know how you plan to do that," he told her. "I don't know the kid's name or when he comes in or any of that. She took off with him on her lunch break the other day though... or so I hear."
He stopped, putting his hands on her waist. "Hey... you think we can stop thinking about everyone else being together and just pay attention to us for a few minutes?" He raised his eyebrows playfully. "I just need reassurance you like me better than the other healers I work with."

Maia laughed and shifted position so that she was sitting on his lap. "Well, now, I don't need to worry about whether or not you're happy, do I? Because I'm not going to fix you up with anyone, and if there are any other women giving you the eye, I will just have to hex them."
She leaned up and kissed him, allowing herself to get lost in him for a moment. "Mmmm.... you know, we probably have about 15 minutes before dinner's ready," she said, smiling playfully at him. "We could go upstairs for a bit..."

Chase laughed at this and shook his head. "No, you and I should be happy." He cut himself short, realizing that the rest of what he was about to say could lead down a topic of conversation that he really didn't want to go down, and he covered it by kissing her. "But I am happy. You're beautiful and I'm lucky to have you." Of course, that might do it, too.
"Fifteen minutes? You don't have much faith in me, do you?" he asked her with a wink, but just like that, he lifted her in his arms and got to his feet. It didn't need to be suggested twice to him. And it didn't matter how stressful work had been... she took all of that away for him.

Yes, his words did start her thinking about what she really wanted, and she also knew that he was aware of it, by the sudden way he stopped and kissed her. It was as though he was trying to distract her, and as effective as it was, it still bothered her just a little bit.
Marriage was a subject they just didn't talk about. In the early days of their relationship, the subject had been discussed and dismissed. Chase didn't see marriage as necessary, and Maia, being the free spirit that she was, had agreed that such traditional conventions weren't important. But lately, she had been thinking differently, and Chase knew it. She wanted the tradition--the white dress, the flowers, the cake... Maybe the marriage itself wasn't necessary, because in every other way, they were just like husband and wife. But she wanted the ceremony. Didn't every little girl dream of her wedding day? And most girls didn't really grow out of that dream until they had fulfilled it.
She didn't want to argue with him, not right now. He'd just come home, they'd both had hard days, and she just wanted to lose herself in him.
"Mmmm... I could set the oven timer to 'warm'," she murmured against his lips, and pulled out her wand to point it in the direction of the kitchen. She managed to cast a quick spell on the oven just before Chase swept her up into her arms. If she closed her eyes, she could pretend he was carrying her over the threshold...
