It was about a week after the attack at Hogsmeade and it started to seem like things were going back to normal. Students weren't as jumpy each time the owls flew in at breakfast, there wasn't a line outside the hospital wing and the councellor's door. Aleena sat at lunch one day and realized she was starting to feel hope that everything would be okay again.
Today, Alenna didn't have aany homework to do (the teachers have been going extremely light lately) and she had plans to meet Jeremy. She was just haveing lunch in the Great Hall when she saw him walk in.

Jeremy was a nervous wreck. He always was whenever he was about to meet with Alenna. And yet, he always felt better once he was with her. She made him feel braver, and more confident than he usually was without her.
He hurried down to the Great Hall and wiped his hands on the front of his robe. Then he looked over to the Ravenclaw table to see Alenna sitting there. He broke into a smile and felt the fluttering in his stomach start to ease.
"Hi, Alenna," he said shyly as he approached the table.

Alenna smiled when she saw Jeremy come into the Great Hall and waved to catch his attention. As he walked over, her stomache tighetened slighly and she remembered the kiss they shared in the hospital wing. The memory made her blush and she took a breath before he made it to where she was sitting.
"Hey Jeremy," Alenna said. "I was just finishing up lunch," she gestured to her almost finished plate of food.

Jeremy smiled at her. She looked so pretty, it took his breath away sometimes. He gave her a quick kiss on the cheek, then slid into the chair next to her. "OK," he said. "Mind if I grab a quick bite before we head out? I had to send an owl to my mum... ever since the attack, she wants me to owl her every day."
He blushed slightly at the mention of his overprotective mother. But then, he and his mum only had each other, so he could hardly blame her.

"Yea, no problem," Alenna said as Jeremy sat down. She smiled when he spoke about owling his mother. "Yea, I try to check in on Theo every once and an while. But I don't think it's affected him all that much. Or at least he's not showing it..." Granted, her little brothers were kind of hard to get a hold of, always running around and what not. "So what are our plans for today?" she asked.

Jeremy had found a platter of sandwiches and had taken one of these for himself. "Yeah, it's hard to know how the younger kids are going to take something like that," he said. "They feel like they should be strong... But how can you really deal with something like that? I'm still kind of freaked out about it... especially after what happened to Gia."
He hadn't known Gia very well, but she was in his class, and her death had apparently been very heroic, but brutal. It was frightening to think that it could all end so suddenly and violently. Jeremy was trying very hard to get over it, and had been spending some time with Ms. Raines, the school counselor.
"Anyway," he said changing the subject, "I was thinking... it's kind of a warm day today... maybe we could go for a little walk around the lake."

Alenna took his hand in hers when he brought up Gia. Alenna barley knew the girl, but the whole group of 7th years had taken her death pretty hard.
"Sounds great," Alenna said when Jeremy mentioned the lake. "It's finally starting to get a little warmer outside, it'll be nice." she smiled widely.

Jeremy ate a little of his sandwich, before turning to her. "I keep wishing things could go back to normal, but I guess they never really will, huh? I mean... people died... and the school couldn't protect us. I heard they were going to pass a new rule that you had to be at least a third year to go to Hogsmeade and that we'd have to go in chaperoned groups. And we have all these Aurors walking around the grounds... It's scary, you know? People are saying it's a war."
He wanted to have fun and get his mind off of everything, but it was impossible. The whole situation seemed to hang in the air, just a darkness that lingered.

War. The dreaded word that no one wanted to say aloud but everyone knew was comming. It was inevitable. Alenna didn't want to talk about war. She felt like that dark fear was consuming all of them. Sometimes, not all the time but sometimes, you just need to avoid the inevatible.
She put down her sandwitch defiantly and took Jeremy's hand in hers. "No more doom and gloom," she said. Her face brightened slightly and she smiled at Jeremy. "Come on, lake, lets go," and she stood up, basically dragging Jeremy along with her.

Jeremy nodded. Alenna was right. If they kept worrying about the war and the impending darkness, it would only make them sick. They needed to be positive now, to look to the future.
And Jeremy knew right then that he couldn't imagine his future without Alenna in it. He decided not to say anything just yet... after all, they had only just started dating. But he knew it with a certainty that couldn't be denied.
He brought his sandwich with him as they walked out of the Great Hall and out the front doors. "OK, so what other fun things can we talk about? We won't mention anything scary."

"Yes, nothing scary," Alenna agreed as they reached the lake. Though it was still December, the sun was shining, just like Jeremy had said, and the snow on the ground was sloshy and wet. Alenna slipped on some of the more sodden snow and gripped onto jeremy, laughing. She wasn't entirely sure why she was laughing. Maybe it was just because here she was with Jeremy, and everything felt like it was going to be okay. Everyone in the world was afraid right now, but with Jeremy, Alenna didn't need to be scared.
"I got a letter from my little sister today," Alenna said. "Amria's so excited for the holidays to come," she laughed at the childish nature of her nine year old sister.

Jeremy laughed as she slipped and grabbed onto him. Wrapping an arm around her to hold her up, he pulled her a little closer. Although he used to be shy, he was slowly becoming bolder and more confident with her.
"Careful," he said, still chuckling. "If you fall, we'll both fall and we'll end up covered in mud!" He could just imagine coming back to the school covered in mud. Nolan would never let him live that down, he was sure.
"Aww, that's cute," he said. "I don't have any brothers or sisters... I'd love to meet your family sometime. It's really just me and my mum... My dad... well, he's not in the picture."
Jeremy never really liked to talk about his father, who was still in muggle prison for robbery. He hadn't even seen his father for 8 years, since just before he found out he was a wizard.

"Oh, what's a little mud?" Alenna laughed. She leaned into Jeremy as he wrapped his arm around her. "Never hurt nobody."
"No siblings at all?" Alenna asked. Her brothers and sister were some of her closest friends, she couldn't imagine not hiving them. "You should come over for the holidays. You and your mum, it'll be fun." Alenna smiled. Her family always enjoyed having company.
When Jeremy mentioned his father, Alenna got the feeling it was an uncomfortable subject for him. She turned her head and looked at him, half smiling and silently letting him know that if he wanted to talk about it, he could.

Jeremy laughed. "I haven't played in mud since I was a little kid. I remember making mudpies... I'd wind up covered head to toe in mud. My mother would take one look at me and cry."
Back in those days, he hadn't even realized that his family was poor. That he only had a few outfits, and if his mother couldn't get one clean, he would have to wear it with mud stains on it. To him, those had been the best days of his life, playing with the kids in the neighborhood and coming home filthy. He never knew what stress it put his mother through. It was lucky for him that he no longer had to worry about money.
"That would be nice," Jeremy said. "I'll have to write to her and ask if it's OK. My mum's a muggle, but she's getting used to the idea of magic by now."
He saw the sympathetic glance from her when he mentioned his father, but he didn't want to talk about it. Not yet. Eventually, he would tell her the truth about his father, but he had to work up to it. He hadn't even really told Nolan.

"Oh, mudpies!" Alenna laughed as she reminisced. "My brothers used to make them when we were little and then bring them inside and try and get Mum or Daddy to eat them," she smiled at the memory.
"I'll make sure they'll tone down the magic for your mum," Alenna assured. "We actually do a lot around the house without magic. Dad thinks it's good for us to not rely on magic." Alenna actually agreed with her father, there was nothing wrong with doing things the muggle way.
When he didn't say anything else, Alenna knew he didn't want to say anything more about his father. Alenna understood, and she leaned up and kissed Jeremy on the cheek, then smiled. Even with the war and the attacks and the death that had been around everyone lately, Alenna found that these days, she couldn't help from smiling. She had a feeling it had to do with the Gryffindor beside her.

"Mum would appreciate that," he said. "She hates it when I try to use magic to take the easy way out of things. Whenever I'm home, I have to do things the hard way, but I don't really mind it."
Jeremy couldn't stop smiling, either. There was something to said about finding comfort and shelter in another person while the world seemed to fall down around you. That was what she was to him, warmth and shelter from the storm. And to think, it had all come about because he had stopped being so shy and had come out to admit his feelings for her. What good did it ever do to hide or be afraid? All it ever did was keep you from living your life, he realized. He had made up his mind that he would never be afraid, but that he would simply do what was in his heart and live for the moment, because that was all anyone was guaranteed to have.
Smiling mischievously, he tagged her arm. "Tag!" he said, "You're it!" Then he began to run ahead of her as fast as he could on the soggy, slush-covered grass.

All of the sudden, Jeremy had tagged her and bolted away. Alenna laughed before chasing after him, slipping here and there in the slush. When she reached Jeremy, Alenna streatched out her hand to tag him when she slipped and instead of tagging him slipped and grabbed onto him, causing them to both fall down. They landed in the soggy ground and Alenna burst out in hysterical laughter. "Tag," she breathed in mid-laugh. "Your it!" she continued to laugh, not really caring that they were probably soaking wet by now.

Jeremy fell back on the wet ground, laughing. "Didn't I say we'd end up covered in mud?" he said, shaking his head.
He couldn't believe in that moment just how happy he was. She made him feel like everything was going to be OK. He felt braver, stronger, cooler, than he ever had before, just because she was with him.
Taking a deep breath, he leaned in and kissed her. "Alenna... so, what are we now? Are we, like... dating?"

Alenna shruged when she noticed how dirty they were. Oh well, was all Alenna had to think about that. She didn't care that she was covered in mud, she was totally happy right now with Jeremy, laughing like the two didn't have a care in the world.
She smiled as Jeremy kissed her, lightly kissing him back. She contemplated his question carefully before grinning again. "I'd like us to be..." she said. "What do you think?"

Jeremy smiled as he wrapped his arms around her. "I'd like it, too," he said. "Do you know... I've actually had a crush on you ever since third year? I was embarrassed to tell you... I didn't even tell Nolan, cause I thought he'd make fun of me. But I tried just to be friends with you... just so I could get to know you."
