Angelo walked nto the classroom with his usual laidback gait that was never lazy. He took a few seconds to survey the classroom before choosing a seat next to a girl in fifth or sixth year, and leaned back. He always looked forward to this class, it didn't seem like actual learning to him, which made him excel all the better.

Angelo ended up sitting close to Brynn, and she sat up a bit to wave to him. "Hi Angelo," she said with a smile. She had briefly forgotton about the teacher's search for another thrid year competator.

Voltaire Rori volunteer and motioned her to the dueling platform, the only other third year was looking resolutely away, instead of drawing attention away from her self, it was like a beacon. Voltaire sighed and pointed to Natalie St. Claire's second year friend. "You, Mr. Snape, on to the platform, Thank you so much for volunteering! two points to ravenclaw and slytherin." he said smiling knowing full well Severus did not raise his hand and didn't want to participate anymore than the rest of the class. "Since he's a year behind you Ms. Logan, your handicapped for the duel not to use anything higher than second year hexing." He thought that was a fair stipulation and hoped they would both agree. He had no intention however to enlighten either one of them that in formal dueling if they didn't agree he would arbitrate until they did.

Severus awkwardly stood up. He hadn't even made a move to raise his hand! hearing that he however got two more points for the house cup however cooled his head. He gave the professor a narrowed eyed look, trying to figure something about him out. "Thank you sir." he said and climbed up the platform. He didn't like that Rori would duel with a handicap, so at the opportunity to agree, Severus said "No, I don't agree, she shouldn't duel with a handicap." he clutched his hands at his sides and looked at the professor thin lipped, after all Severus liked this class. He didn't want to seem like a pouting brat.

((OOC: wow Sev has a great number of posts!))
Voltaire was stunned. He thought they would both agree and that would be the end of it. He measured Severus with a new look, he was sure he wanted a "fair" fight, but not because he liked the idea of 'fairness' it was to prove that he could, despite the difference in education and age. Voltaire liked that in him. he turned to Rori and asked "Do you agree then to no Handicap and to duel equally between the two of you?" in the back of his mind he hoped the class was actually paying attention to this part of duel instead of waiting for the first spell to be fired.

Rori's eyes widened slightly as Severus was called down, but she gave him a friendly smile in greeting. As Voltaire mentioned a handicap, Rori was going to agree with him, however Severus spoke first. She bit her bottom lip as she thought for a moment. Severus was smart, and she knew that he knew exactly what he was doing. "Um," Rori began. She didn't want to disappoint Severus in disagreeing with him. Rori finally nodded. "Yes, I agree." She looked at Voltaire then to Severus, awaiting the moment to begin.

Severus bowed to Rori and then turned and walked to his place on the platform, then he turned smoothly and got into a stance. He mentally weighed his options, If he attacked first, she could start defending, he could then keep going and continue attacking and overwhelm her, but he threw out that plan as soon as he thought of it. It seemed so cowardly, so he prepared a shield spell that would act like a tennis racket, it would send any spell she sent at him back. It was going to have to be her move.

As Severus bowed, so did Rori. She gave him a gentle smile, then turned to walk to her place on the platform. Her hand tightened around her wand a little more as spells started to run through her mind. Since Severus was her friend, she wanted to go easy but she knew that it didn't matter. It was supposed to be a duel and she had to do exactly that, duel.
Rori was going to have to do quick thinking, that was for sure. Raising her wand, she gave a flick of her wand before uttering the words, Locomotor Mortis.

Severus threw up a shield charm first and Rori's leg-locker curse bounced away and hit the back wall of the classroom. No wonder it wasn't decorated like other classrooms. the spell scorched the wall with a powder gray smear where it landed. Severus aimed a lightening spell at Rori. It was usually used on objects to make them lighter, he was hoping to hit her clothing or a body part. it would throw off her balance for a split second. He sent another spell right under the first "Serpensortia!" he jabbed his wand at Rori with a sharp downward flick. A thin rope of a serpent swished from his wand, but with venomous looking stripes of red, black and yellow. Another distraction, but he hoped that it would aide in the duel. He wanted an interesting study from this, he wanted to show the class that he was brilliant at this and novel. He only hoped he would win and Rori wouldn't hold it against him.

Rori wasn't quite expecting a lightening spell and it caught the end of her sleeve. She quickly put it out before looking at the snake before her. Snakes weren't a favorite of hers, in fact, she was scared of them. Her eyes widened as she looked at it. The only thing that popped into her mind as she pointed her wand quickly at the snake was flipendo. The snake was knocked back off the platform and Rori's attention was back on Severus.
She had a feeling that she wasn't going to win this duel but that didn't really matter. Moving her wand again in Severus' direction, she cast Botaro, remembering it from previous classes.

Severus accico'd his serpent back to the platform, where it landed and hissed angrily at being tossed about. He brought up his shield again and knocked the botaro back at her again. He sent "Everte Statum!" flying at her, she might very well get hurt, but he was going to win. He wasn't dashing or jumping like in the previous duel, but he was trying to use a broader range of spells.

Seeing the snake again diverted her attention, although she was able to block botaro, she wasn't able to block the other. Rori was trying her best to think of a spell to get rid of the slithering thing in front of her but every spell she had read about was slipping her mind.
Once Severus' spell hit her in the chest, she was sent flying. Rori flew backward in the air before landing with a thud on the ground. For a second she laid there and then tried to slowly get up.

Voltaire looked amazed at the two students in front of him. "Enough! Severus Snape wins! Five points to Slytherin House, four to Ravenclaw." He kept his face blank as he vanished the magic serpent, it was a cornsnake, it only meant to look dangerous. Voltaire went over to his 'dautgher and helped her up, as he did he whispered to her "you did good!" and then went back to the center of the platform. He turned toward the class and began a lecture the class. "Now this duel was short, can anyone point out what happened in the duel? Where did Ms. Logan go wrong? Anyone?"

Ruecain was shocked how Severus was able to beat a third year ravenclaw no less! 'Way to go Snape-a-doodle!' Ruecain thought merrily. He considered back to the duel which had just happened, Snape had blocked the spell the girl had sent and then cast a snake towards the girl which would have distracted anybody. It was like music, different notes coming together to make a whole. 'Snape should try to be a musican...' Ruecain chuckled at the thought. He raised his hand and waited for the professor to motion toward him and proceeded to answer. "Severus baited his time and blocked her first spell and proceeded to cast that snake spell to distract her."

Voltaire was pleased that someone was paying attention other than sitting back slack jawed with awe. "Very Good! Point to Ravenclaw for good observation!" he clapped his hands together hoping to get someone to startle in their seat. "Can anyone in class recall the differences between this duel and the one the class had previously seen?" Voltaire waited with baited breath to see if anyone would remember how to speak.

Cadence was sitting near the back of the room, boredly filing her nails. The only reason she had even taken this stupid course was that she had heard the professor was a nutter, and she wanted to watch the guy implode. It was sort of the same twisted effect that muggles had when they stared at the victims of a car accident.
The duel had been mildly interesting, and since Severus was a member of her house, she felt obligated to cheer him on, even though she actually found the slimy little kid to be rather.... icky. When he cast the nasty snake spell, she shivered in horror. Snakes were gross.
After the duel was over, she raised her hand. "Excuse me, Professor? Can someone, like, make that nasty snake vanish or something?"

Voltaire was caught off guard by the sudden request to get rid of the snake, which was already taken care of. "You're too late to ask because I already Vanished it. If you'd like I can conjure another!" He flicked his wand back and forth against his palm and a snake bloomed at the tip. He walked toward the girl and smiled as the snake twisted around his hand. It was a cute little snake, which he swished suddenly toward her turning it into a length of green ribbon. "So, as demonstrated, you can always mentally attack your opponent in a duel if you can't out pace them in spell work." he paused for a bit of dramatic effect and said "So, a bit of your lesson today is keeping friends close" he gestured to Snape and Rori, " and enemies closer." waving his hand generally around the room.
