Voltaire opened the door to his classroom and set up the semi-circle again. he was hoping he could get a few younger students to duel today, He did have a few in mind, but the older students were also very good. He sighed and wondered if the Gryffindor head of house was mad because he burned the essays from the previous class, but of course he had warned them that paper work was useless. The look on that snotty student he had given detention too was also PRICELESS. he laughed out loud at the thought of her horrified expression and made sure he vanished the forgotten ashes of the essays and vanished the rest of the 'mood lighting' as he called it, and made sure everyone would have an un-obstructed view of the platform.

"Professor." Christine said standing at the door looking inward, her eyes did a quick sweep of the room before she strode in confidently taking her full measure of both the class and him. Contrary to other students Christine liked to arrive early, she liked to make the class her own rather than coming in to unfamiliar territory, call it a self preservation thing. She was rather excited however to be in this class and thought that it might be one of her more interesting ones.

Voltaire was actually surprised that the first student showed up so soon, normally he had to wait a few minutes before anyone joined him for class. "Hello miss..." he wasn't sure if she was in his previous classes, but then again he wasn't the best at names. At least not this soon into the new classes.

"Montgomery sir." she said turning her full attention on him, "Christine Montgomery. I'm new." she told him simply with a wide smile. She glanced around again at the set up of the classroom and smiled even more, she liked the arena seating, she could almost sense that there would be fun in this class, and by fun she meant duels, actually exercising her magic rather than writing reports about it. Merlin if he had her write essays on the styles of dueling she'd just about jump out the window. Then again she had been to china and seen it done, she had been to Romania and seen how they fought as well, it was all fascinating to her.

Ah another Montgomery "Any relation with Samantha Montgomery? " he asked causally waving her toward the seating. "I guess I'll run by the basics as well, This is a practical class, I normally don't assign any written assignments, they are a waste of time. I'll assign reading, only because it's a good idea to read about certain styles rather than see them, most of the students here wouldn't be qualified for that sort of dueling anyway, Oh and Before I forget " he chuckled at that, his memory was much better than it had been since the torture he had endured "I'm Professor Voltaire Rothschild, Formerly Professional Duelist Voltaire Skipit." He made a courteous bow and wondered if she had ever heard of him, he was well known in dueling, but he couldn't be sure, especially the way most of his other students treated him. If he was honest with himself, he wanted a little bit more positive attention drawn to his former dueling glory than the incident in the first class of this year.

"Samantha is my cousin sir." When he dipped into his bow she returned a curtsy, "Yes sir I know who you are, and it's an honor to be in your class." She smiled once more, "My previous tutor duels. Nothing serious mind you, he's married and his wife wouldn't like it very much if he were injured, but he followed dueling for most his life, he said you were very good and that I should shut my mouth and pay attention in class." she laughed then " I have a tendency to ask questions and supposedly cause unending torture to those whom would try and teach me something." she shrugged, "But I promise I'm a very eager student..." she glanced around the class once more finally choosing a seat, "You mentioned different styles, when I was in China I met a man who used a different style than my own, the accuracy of my strikes suffered but it was a much more powerful strike when I did hit my target."

Voltaire nodded and said "Ah! I know that style, I don't favor it, putting all you've got into powerful spells is a real drain, If use spells in succession however, after one hits your powerful hex or spell has a greater chance of landing. There is nothing like a well hit target...Oh and that man... he didn't have a big boil on his forehead did he? on the ..." he quickly tapped the left and then the right side of his forehead "left side?" he wondered if it was someone he had met before, of course he did spend more than a bit of time in the underbelly of dueling, but not that his students needed to know that!

She smiled at him with good humor, "Well if he did he did well to hide it from me." she grinned, she was going to like this class she already liked the professor. "I don't think I'd do very well with that style either, it was a drain indeed, although I think it would have it's use in a duel none the less, my old tutor, he was always trying to teach me that versatility is a strength in combat."

Rori entered class, early as usual. She spotted a new student, so she smiled at her before looking at Voltaire. Her smile grew. "Hello Professor." She was getting the hang of just calling Voltaire Professor during class, although it felt sort of strange because outside of class she could call him by his name.
She took a seat in the first row as usual.

Leo walked into dueling class just after Rori. He had known he was following her, but he didn't mean it in a creepy way. He was just deep in his thoughts about how he could find out what Rori's favorite book was. It seemed like a random thing to talk about, unless they were already talking about books. But he was anxious to find out... he wanted to get that gift for her so that he could hurry up and ask her to the dance before someone else found out she wasn't yet spoken for.
As he entered the room, he gave a smile to Professor Rothschild and sped up to reach Rori in the front row. "Hey, Rori," he greeted her. He wanted to give her a kiss hello, but with Voltaire looking on, he felt uneasy even giving her a kiss on the cheek. "You look nice today."

She had just put her books on her desk when Leo came in. Rori gave him a smile. "Hey Leo." She felt a little giddy around him still, and her smiles were hard to hide when he appeared. Dueling had become her favorite class all over again with him there.
"Thank you," Rori replied. "You look nice too, 'course you always do." Her cheeks were tinted a light pink. "Did you have a good class?"

Leo shrugged. "Yeah, I guess so," he said. "Class is class. Actually... I used to really like Ancient Runes, but not anymore. You know why?" he asked, leaning closer with a very serious look on his face.

Rori rested her arm on her desk as she looked toward him. She could agree with him on that. Some classes just seemed to just go by and that was it, however some seemed to have more of a flow and interest to them. Those that seemed to flow where the ones that they shared.
Nothing popped in her mind at his question, and she shook her head. "No, why?"

He broke into a smile at this. "Because you're not in it," he replied, reaching over and touching the tip of her nose with his finger. "Really, any class you're not in just seems to drag on forever."
He laughed and leaned against his desk with one elbow. "So what are you doing after class?" he asked casually.

As he touched the tip of her nose, Rori laughed. "I've always the same thing about you." She smiled and then gave a shrug. "I haven't really thought about it honestly. Probably going to lunch and then I haven't decided what I was going to do after that. Where you wanting to do anything?"

Leo grinned at her. "I have a free period after lunch, too," he said. "I have some studying to do for potions, so I was thinking maybe we could go to the library together and study. I know it's not the most exciting thing in the world, but... well, with you, everything is a little more fun. What do you say?"
While he was there, he resolved to bring up the topic of favorite books. It would certainly be easier if they were surrounded by them.

Severus walked into class and sat at the far end of the semi circle, he liked being close. He wondered if Rosier would sit next to him of Natalie got there first. As he sat down he decided it he didn't care and took out his wand and a sheet of parchment and a quill, He found it was better to make a few annotations about how someone duels, just in case. He never know if he was going to end up in a duel with anyone.

Evan was only minutes behind Severus, and after looking to see that Natalie was not there, and the rest of the room was filled with people he didn't care to socialize with at this point, he took the seat to Severus' right. "Wotcher," he said in a bored tone. He pulled out his Defense text and dropped it on the desk with a heavy thud. The professors around here seemed to think that the student body was not strong enough, so they had all assigned texts that were more like weights than books.

Theo entered the classroom and nodded at the professor before glancing around the room. He didn't see anyone he knew, except for Christine who was a Gryffindor sixth year as well. She seemed to be having a conversation with Professor Rothschild, so Theo took a seat in the semi circle, in between two empty chairs.

Christine hadn't met many people yet, but when she did meet someone now she was hesitant to use her last name, most people seemed to know about Samantha and why shouldn't they when she was Slytherin Champion. Christine never had to work for popularity and this wasn't one of the times that she would start, but she was far too much her own person to be referred to as Samantha's Cousin for the rest of her time at Hogwarts.
