Jacob found that he was actually enjoying himself. Dancing was not really something he did very often. Usually if a girl asked him or something, he would more than likely turn them down politely. However, he now thought that if he saw Cynthia out somewhere like this, he wouldn't hesistant to say yes. For once, Jacob was also very distracted by her. It usually wasn't easy for him to get distracted.
He was begining to get hot himself. "I am too," he said. "Let's just sit this one out. Do you want me to get you a drink or anything?"

Griff stiffened as soon as he set foot in the club. It wasn't his usual scene but occasionally he "lowered" himself to be around the general public whenever he had an itch to scratch. He had one now and thought that the new nightclub would provide something good to taste. He wasn't disappointed. It wasn't something new, but rather something old that caught his eye and his intrigue.
Cynthia.
It couldn't be...
She was dancing now but her partner seemed like he was going to take her off the dancefloor, he had to get a closer look.

Cynthia didn't notice that she had attracted the attention of anyone other than her partner. Normally she would have noticed the creeping sensation that came with someone staring a little bit too long, but she was enjoying herself with Jacob. It was very rare to feel so comfortable with someone so quickly, but she and Jacob really seemed to mesh well.
Silently she followed him off the dance floor and over to the bar. "I'll just have a club soda with a twist of lime," she said. Glancing at Jacob sheepishly, she said, "I don't drink. It upsets my stomach."
It was a practiced lie. No, the reasons she didn't drink were a little bit different. But she was not about to tell him that. She had never told anyone.

"Don't worry about it," Jacob said with a smile. "I don't drink too terribly often, and when I do I don't drink too much. I've been drunk once, and I've learned from that not to ever do that again." He was never one for too much drinking. Jacob never really saw the reason in it because it didn't really do anything for him.
"You dance extremely well by the way."

Cynthia smiled. "Thank you," she said. "You're not so bad yourself, actually."
She was unusually relieved to hear he didn't drink much. It wasn't very often that she found a guy who didn't really like to drink. But when she did, it always impressed her. She was always looking for a guy who didn't drink. The smell of alcohol brought back memories that she never wanted to relive.

He ordered a club soda with twist of lime for Cynthia and a glass of gingerale for himself. Jacob looked back to Cynthia. "I usually go for firewhiskey in a small glass first, then if I get anything after that, it's gingerale." He gave her a smile and then took their drinks from the bartender and handed Cynthia her drink.
"Shall we sit?"

He studied her, every part of her. From her actions, to her words which he could read from her lips, to the subtle curve of her chin, and he appreciated it all. It amused him, and that was strong enough an emotion for him at least to continue watching, to almost salivate.
He realized this was the most excited he had been since...well hell he couldn't remember, and that sent a thrill down his spine even more. It took so much to make him excited, that getting excited was exciting...and he wasn't about to lose the feeling.

"Yes, let's sit," Cynthia replied with a smile. She took her drink from Jacob, and her fingers brushed lightly against his. The simple touch seemed to spark like an electric shock and she pulled away quickly, causing a small amount of her drink to splash up over the rim of her glass slightly.
Her only reaction was to smile more broadly. "Well, it's a good thing club soda doesn't stain," she joked.
As they moved over to an empty table, Cynthia began to feel the creepy crawly sensation on the back of her neck--the kind of sensation she got whenever someone was watching her. She shivered, then took a quick look around. At first she didn't see anyone suspicious... but then suddenly, she found herself staring into a familiar pair of eyes.
Merlin... It couldn't be. Her eyes widened, and she let out an audible gasp. She knew that face... and there was no question in her mind as to whether he recognized her as well.

There was no mistaking when her fingers brushed against his, because it caused him to look down. Although he noticed that she pulled away quickly, Jacob did not make a comment because he didn't want her to feel uneasy.
In reaction to the drink, Jacob laughed. "It's alright. It's just on my sleeve." He smiled widely at her to let her know that he wasn't mad or anything that she happened to spill something on him.
Jacob led her back toward an empty table and pulled her chair out from the table before glancing back, noticing she had stopped. He wasn't sure what was going on, but he walked over to her and lightly touched her arm. "Cynthia? Is everything alright?"

Cynthia shivered and tore her eyes away from the familiar face. She didn't want to believe that she was seeing who she thought she was seeing. Her first instinct was to run. But she also felt certain that if she did run, she would never stop.
Raising her eyes to look back at Jacob, she managed a weak smile. "It's... it's nothing. I just... thought I saw someone I knew. But I must have been mistaken."

Even though she did give a smile, Jacob didn't quite believe her. Again, he wasn't going to push anything because he didn't want her to feel uneasy. He turned his eyes in the direction that she was looking, only to settle on a man but Jacob didn't ponder on who he was that kept staring.
"Alright. For a moment there I thought you zoned out completely on me." He gave her a light smile and gently led her toward the empty table. The question of who she thought it was popped into his head, but he wasn't going to ask it. If she wanted him to know, she would tell him. "I haven't bored you too much, have I?"

Cynthia couldn't quite meet his eyes anymore. Her enthusiasm was fading, and it had nothing to do with Jacob. She couldn't quite stop herself from checking to see if the man was still watching her.
"Oh, no, of course not," she said. "I promise, I'm not bored. I might... I might be getting a little tired, that's all. It's been kind of a long day, you know? Being new in town and all. I'm still trying to find my way around and get to know people."

Jacob did feel that maybe he was sort of boring, even if she said she wasn't. His smile had gone away and now he wasn't sure what he should feel at the moment. Finishing off his drink, he kept noticing that she kept looking back. In a way, it seemed that she was almost scared the way she kept looking back, but Jacob wasn't going to say anything just in case she became defensive.
"If you want, I can show you around one day," he offered. "And if you are getting too tired, I could always walk you home. Nothing funny, I promise."

Cynthia's eyes drifted back to the man. If it really was Griffen... She was in serious trouble. Her eyes locked with his, and the feeling of panic began to rise. It was him. It had to be. Oh, Merlin.
She had to get out of here. She couldn't let him come up to her, to talk to her.... to start asking questions. As far as he knew, she was supposed to be dead. And yet, here she was, right in front of him, proving that the story had all been a lie. What was he doing here? He should have been in Germany. But now she realized that she had been a fool to expect him to stay put. She never should have come here... she had been safe in Australia. The chances of running into anyone who knew her before her so-called "death" had been almost non-existent in Australia. But here... she was just too close. And yet, now that she was here, it was too late to go back.
Tearing her eyes from Griffen, she gave Jacob an apologetic smile. "You know what? I think maybe I should go home. I'd love it if you walked me home."

Being the nice guy that he was, Jacob didn't bother asking the problem. He just went along with what she said at the moment. There would be a time when he would figure it out, but now obviously wasn't it.
"That will not be a problem," he said with a smile. He couldn't help but notice she continued to look back and something made him want to protect her of whatever she seemed to be looking looking over her shoulder all the time at.
Jacob stood up and offered his hand to her. "Where do you live?"

Cynthia's hand shook very slightly as she took a last sip of her club soda. It was very strange, but she almost wished Jacob wasn't being quite so nice about all this. If he wasn't such a gentleman, she wouldn't feel quite so odd about wanting to leave. In fact, there was a part of her that actually didn't want to leave at all. She'd been having a good time, which was rare for her. She always had trouble just letting go and having a good time with someone. But Jacob made it so easy. Dangerously easy.
But Griffen--if it really was him, and she had very little doubt that it was--had to go and ruin it by being here tonight.
"I really only just arrived in town, actually... I haven't even had time to get an actual place. I'm staying at this little boarding house on the other end of town. Mrs. Pennywhistle's."

"I know exactly where that is," he said. Jacob didn't really want to leave just yet either. He had been enjoying himself for the first time in a long time, but he knew that all good things must come to an end some how or another. Jacob just hoped that he could enjoy a little bit more time with her some other time. He didn't really like the idea of not seeing her again.
Being nice, he helped her to her feet and started to led her toward the door, casting a glance in the direction of the person that he supposed she had be staring at. Jacob held the door open as the cold night air greeted them.

As soon as they stepped out of the club, Cynthia felt better. Without the heat of Griffen's eyes on her, she felt herself begin to relax again in Jacob's presence. This scared her a little... she was not used to feeling comfortable with anyone. She was guarded in all interactions with other people. But something about Jacob made her feel at ease... and that was possibly even more frightening than having Griffen stare at her.
"Thank you for doing this," she said, smiling up at him. "It was probably silly of me to come out to the club so soon after coming into town. I just thought it would be good to get a feel for the place. But I did have a good time... and I'm glad to have met you."

Jacob put his hands in his pockets. "There's no need to thank me." He returned her smile. "I'm just helping the new person around." His smile widened slightly. "Personally, I don't think that it was silly of you to go to the club so soon. I'm not just saying that because we had the chance to meet, but it was good that you wanted to find the place to meet people. Although, sometimes the club can be a little bit iffy when trying to make friends. Some guys in there only want one thing and once they get it you'd never see them again. Some of the girls in there can be pretty nasty, but then again I suppose you already knew that," Jacob gave a shrug.
"You had good intentions and that I believe is admirable." At the mention that she did have a good time, Jacob's cheeks started to grow warm. "I'm glad that you enjoyed yourself back there." His smile returned on his face. "And, I'll even let you in on a little secret. I'm glad to have met you too." Jacob gave her a wink. "Tonight wasn't near as boring as it first looked to be. I thought that since I just got back that I would just go in grab something to drink and then go to bed," he added with a laugh.

Cynthia smiled. "You're a gentleman. That's a pretty rare breed nowadays, you know. You'd better not let it get out, or you'll be swarmed with girls. And then I'll never be able to get anywhere near you."
She wanted to see him again, she realized. She found herself wanting a lot of things with him. Dates, dinners, dancing... things that all belonged to a normal girl with a normal life. Not girls on the run from tragic secrets from their past.
But there was another part of her that wanted to run. She couldn't allow Griffen to get close to her. She couldn't let him know that it was really her, that she was alive. If he did... her whole life could crumble.
"Do you think you can help me find an apartment?"
