Sensing that her mood had gone downhil he relented and set her down before they reached Hogsmeade. Somethings were hit or miss with the girl, but Julian understood she had a predisposition to not be in the cherriest of moods at the moment. Her life had been turned upside down. He wanted to right it.
"I apologize..."

She scowled a while longer after he had released her but he seemed sincere in his apology and he was too cute to be mad long at. Her face relaxed into an easy smile. "Accepted. But for future reference, I'm not one of those girls that says the opposite of what she means." She was quite sure he had had experience with plenty of girls, and from her own experience she knew that most girls played those sorts of games. Not that Lyra didn't enjoy her own games from time to time, but now was not one of those times. Of course, Julian, a near stranger, wouldn't know that.

"Understood." he said then nudged her slightly, allowing a gentle smile to overtake his face as he moved them forward, "But you can't blame a guy for trying to keep you in his arms." he retorted afterward which may have given wonder to whether or not he had truly been apologetic.

"If only more guys thought the way you do," she muttered bitterly to herself.
She walked with him, a slow, steady pace that was casual. She had not factored in the weather when she asked to go to Hogsmeade instead of her classes, and was now regretting not changing when she had had the chance. Her emotions, it seemed, had run away with her. Usually she thought things through, planned every angle, known all the facts that could be known. But here she was, walking toward the village with a stranger in the clothes she had worn yesterday and slept in.

"I'm pretty sure every guy thinks the way I do." he smiled, "At least in that regard."
Julian didn't push her for conversation, although he wondered if her thoughts were too distressing to be left on their own. Taking a deep breath he simply walked with her.

Rystain doesn't, Lyra thought to herself. Rystain didn't care to ever have Lyra in his arms again. He wasn't even upset by seeing Lyra with Julian. This was all so pointless.
Her confidence was shattered with Rystain's dismissal. She didn't know if she could even believe the things Julian said to her now. His affection was a show for the others, and even though there currently was no one around, she was sure he was still pretending.

"I know what you're thinking and you're wrong." he said as matter a factly as possible, he had spent too much time with broken hearted females not to recognize the signs. Sullen stares, sad sighs, a furrowed brow, all while they were wondering why the man that had left them, didn't want them anymore.
" The trouble with men are, they're never satisfied. They want the new thing, the hard thing, the challenge, they miss out on what they have, and all the beautiful challenges that would have been waiting for them. Falling in love is new, it's exciting, it's challenging to get the girl to fall as well, but staying in love, making it work, it's even more challenging, most men fail. You my dear, are exquisite, and his failure to see that, to cherish it, is his failure, it doesn't even touch on your radiance."

There were so many things Julian said that she could argue with. And so many to agree with too. At one point she knew Rystain, knew him to be one of those insatiable guys. But the fact that he was still with Lani, that made him different now. The old Rystain would have...should have let them both go last night. Dismissed them both. Lyra could have been fine with that, because that was who he was. But Lani wasn't new anymore. He'd had Lani for over a month now, that's not new. Not to men like Rystain. He had changed since he'd been with Lani, and Lyra foolishly thought that change was because of her.
Falling in love, he had said. She ignored Julian here. Rystain couldn't love Lani. They weren't right for each other. And you cannot love someone who is wrong for you. Not forever. At some point, you had to see the truth. Lyra knew she was keeping all her faith in that hole-ridden theory but she didn't care how many holes there were, how many times it could be proved wrong. She had to believe it. It was the only thing that could keep the pain down, keep it as numb as possible.
At some point Lyra had stopped moving, whether it was when Julian spoke or when Lyra thought about what he had said, she didn't now. It was useless to think about. But her body was still now and she looked to Julian quizzically. She was silent for a while and the wind whipped around her body, blowing her hair into her face. Dark strands of hair cut across her vision but she still held her locked gaze on the helpful stranger. "What makes you different from men like Rystain? How can you be so aware of how men are, when the men who are like that don't know it themselves?"

Julian was, and was happy to be, one of the exceptions to the rules. There were exceptions and he had been one his entire life. He knew the difference between love and well anything else that came his way, and a lot had come his way.
He paused with her, "Women love more freely than men do. We're stingy and almost...cowardly. Something in our biological make up tells us to go and spread as much of our seed as possible. A woman's biological make up tells her to want love, and to love. Men possess during sex, women surrender. But some men...surrender to the possession and in turn are possessed. Some men fall into the deepest kind of love and once that man goes there...there is no turning back. Nothing *but* love could sustain or make a person happy." he sighed harshly thoughts of Anna springing up in his mind like quick fire and the pain still vibrating throughout his body.
He cleared his throat.

"If that's so, then why are you here with me now? Why are you pretending to be engaged to some schoolgirl you don't even know?" If what he said was true, and he said it with so much conviction that she knew it had to be true, then there should have been nothing in the world to keep him away from his girl. Because his words were so beautiful that they couldn't be separated from the one that inspired. Not for some stunt like this. Not even for Sam.

Julian shook his head out of the reverie that was claiming him and smiled at her, " Because here with you is where I want to be. Because pretending to be a fiance to a beautiful girl is hardly a chore, and much more a pleasure. And one upping the idiots who deign to love and leave gives me a sweet tingly feeling all over." he grinned at her, "Shall we be on our way then?" he asked holding his arm out to her.

What he said was kind of funny and she knew she should laugh but she didn't. She was still confused about him, but she smiled a little as to be polite. She would have to inquire with Sam about him later, but she didn't want to think about going back to the castle just yet. Her mind was still swirling and if she was at the school someone would try to get her to go to her lessons. Swirling brain and lessons did not mix.
"You put up with too much Mr Faust," she said of herself as she hooked her arm into his and continued on their way into the village. She briefly wondered where they would end up but then decided she didn't care as long as there were no students there. She let Julian guide her where he would, not bothering to ask if he had any specific place in mind. Hoping he didn't ask the same of her. She didn't want to think anything anymore. Not for the moment. She wanted everything decided for her so she could focus on staying numb. If she had to choose between losing face and losing control, she'd give up control in a heartbeat.

He seemed to understand just that about her, and didn't press for conversation or for where they were going and simply enjoyed being in her company. It was in the quiet however that his mind couldn't escape Anna whose tragic death left him completely shattered. A shell to the world for two months completely broken, force fed, among other things...and then one night suddenly changing the way he had, dating, all of it was so strange to the public but he never said a thing.

The village came nearer until they were walking down the high street, shops and restaurants on either side of them. Plenty of places for them to stop and go into, but they kept walking past in silence. Lyra found she enjoyed the quiet although it did have the downfall of forcing her thoughts to be heard loudly. But only the same thoughts she had been thinking over and over since last night. There was no new information to add into the equation, she was thankful for that.

"Come on." he said then and took steps towards a shop. He didn't know what was in there but they had circled the town after a while and to delay their trip he was willing to shop.

At first she didn't argue, simply grateful for the change in direction and not having to be the one to change it. But when she saw where they were headed she smirked at him. "Zonko's? I didn't take you for much of a jokster, Julian. It seems a little juvenile for a man like you. But if it will help get you out of this mood..." She laughed, knowing he was probably taking her there to get her out of her foul mood.

He looked at the shop suffered a small groan of surprise before putting a smile on his face, " Today milady I shall be your jester" he said with a small bow leading her into the joke shop.

She laughed louder at his groan. Perhaps he hadn't meant to take her to the joke shop, but he certainly did have follow through. She curtsied after his bow, which made her laugh harder, happy to joke instead of mope. She hated moping, and knew she was no fun when she did it. Even though she wanted to just crawl into a ball and hide away for months, she knew she really ought to snap out of it, for Julian's sake. She couldn't imagine what sort of girl he thought she was, with all the ups and downs in only a short time. She would try to put forth more effort to be charming. He was doing so afterall and it was the least she could do in return.
"And what sort of comedy does my jester have in store for me today?" She looked around the store and noted all sorts of randomness stocked on the shelves. She hadn't spent much time in this store before.

"We shall see my dear." he said escorting her inside and taking a shuddering glance around before smiling back at her, "'We shall see."
Resigned to his fate as jester he glanced around the isles to find something that would perhaps gain him a smile on her face. He heard her laugh, and there was no sound like it. Nothing said, was ever more beautiful than the laughter that came from the heart. Laughter now would be wrenched from her since she was more melancholy bent for the moment.

His utter lack of enthusiasm for being in Zonko's clashed with his clear desire to please her. In turn, she would please him as well. Though, she'd wait until after having a bit of fun with him. She'd pick their next stop, after seeing what sort of things he'd do to make her happy here.
