Anna raised an eyebrow in return and her lips curved into a sensuous smile. "I like you," she declared, closing the small gap between their bodies, and she danced against Ursula as she reached for the cigarettes as she had been invited to do.
But a moment later, she had pulled away and was pulling one from the box. "Care to join me outside for a smoke break?" It was the 70's, they didn't have to go outside, but Anna didn't like to be crowded when she smoked.

Ursula didn't have to be asked twice. It was secretly what she had been hoping for. Anna was really stunning... sensuous, seductive, and full of life. If she wasn't careful, Ursula had a feeling she would be in danger of falling for this woman. "I would love to," she said, her voice sounding almost like a purr.
She turned slightly, seeking out Nathalia in the crowd. It wasn't hard to find her daughter, now surrounded by handsome men. It made Ursula proud to see her daughter tormenting the men so easily.
Catching Nathalia's eye, she nodded her head toward the door, then slipped her arm around Anna. She added a quick "thumbs up" signal as they headed toward the door.

Nathalia gave her mother a nod and an approving smile. She didn't know if they were just headed outside for a break, or if one of them was taking the other home, but either way, it was a good sign for her mother.
Either way, she was going to keep dancing for a while yet.

Anna caught the return gesture from Nathalia, but none of what Ursula had signaled to her daughter. She smiled to herself, but was quiet until they had gone outside.
When the door closed, the music was nothing more than a dull thumping, no tune recognizeable, and the crisp, chilly air struck them in stark contrast to the body heat built up in the club.
"Your daughter's managed to steal most of the boys that I came with," she said, nonchalantly as she lit the cigarette and pulled away from Ursula to lean against the wall and savor her smoke. "Lucky for her I hadn't planned on going home with any of them, anyway."

Ursula lit her cigarette as well, but instead of leaning against the wall, she stood facing Anna, her long legs crossed at the ankles. "Nathalia is good for running interference," she said coolly, blowing out a puff of smoke. "It's probably a little inappropriate to have my daughter help me pick up women, but she and I have always been more like sisters than like mother and daughter. She's pretty much the only good thing I ever got from a man."

"You look more like sisters," Anna told Ursula. "And that's not a line," she added with a sly grin. She could definitely see the similarities in the two women, and Ursula looked young.
"I wish I could say I ever got anything good from a man. Just a handful of bruises and broken hearts. Gave 'em up a long time ago." She shrugged as she stated this very matter of factly.

"Thank you," Ursula replied, taking another puff from her cigarette. "I guess you could say I'm an unorthodox mother... she's more like my best friend than my daughter. We've been through a lot together."
She shrugged. "Nathalia's father was the only man I've ever been with. He was married while he was seeing me on the side. After a while, I decided I'd had enough of being second in his life. Then I met my first girlfriend, and I haven't gone back."

Anna nodded, just listening. "It's funny how many men cheat on their wives. Makes you wonder why a girl gets married at all."
She wasn't bitter about men, though Merlin knew she would have every right to be if she were. She had been through a lot, with a lot of different men for different reasons.
"So, Ursula, when you're not using your daughter to pick up on women, what do you do?"

"It's because our society teaches little girls that getting married and having babies is their sole reason for existing. That it's the one thing in their lives that they should all be aiming for. But it teaches little boys that it's important to be tough and powerful and not to give in to their emotions, because it's weak. So men grow up thinking that it's OK for them to sleep around while their poor, long-suffering wives languish at home with the kids. It's really terribly sexist." She took a long drag from her cigarette and shrugged. "But admittedly, not all men are like that. My brother Benjamin is positively devoted to his vicious, prejudiced shrew of a wife."
Ursula couldn't help allowing her hatred of Kara to slip out. She was still bitter about the remarks her sister in law had made at dinner the other night.
But her mind quickly switched gears as Anna asked what she did. How to answer that? She was a woman of many secrets, and she certainly couldn't tell Anna the truth about what she did. "I work for the Ministry," she said vaguely. "Sort of an enforcer, if you will. I'm not at liberty to talk much about it, I'm afraid. What about you?"

Anna laughed. "Not a fan of your brother's wife, are you?" She shrugged. "It's all right. I'm not much a fan of my brother."
She finished her cigarette and put the end of it out against the wall, but was content to stay while Ursula finished hers. "I take it you're from one of those wealthy, British families... they do tend to be awfully sexist. I was a bit luckier... American, myself."
She nodded and followed along, still having no idea what Ursula did for a living, but she was imagining some in of cop, and that was kind of sexy.
"I'm an actress," she finally let slip.

Ursula laughed lightly. "No, I'm not crazy about the shrew. I mean, don't get me wrong, if I thought I had a chance with her... But she's terribly narrow-minded and opinionated. Every time I see her, she makes these comments, reminding me how she doesn't approve of the way I live my life. Like she gets to have an opinion."
She took one more long drag from her cigarette and blew out a large smoke ring. As it broke apart and dissipated into the air, Ursula dropped her cigarette on the ground and stepped on it, then looked back at Anna. "Yeah... as a matter of fact, my family is very wealthy, connected, and powerful. I've always been the family rebel. I had an arranged marriage... I was supposed to marry this guy when I was 18. Instead I ran off and had an affair with an Italian aristocrat who got me pregnant and dumped me. Before Nathalia was born, I met a woman who consoled me... and I fell in love with her. The rest is history."
She didn't normally share quite so much information on the first meeting. In fact, she'd even let slip one little tidbit of information about Nathalia's father that she had never told to her own daughter--that her father was an Italian aristocrat. But there was something about Anna that was pulling her in... she wanted to get closer. To know more about each other.
"An actress?" Ursula said, intrigued. "Did you... wait." A realization struck her and she broke into a slow smile. "That's where I've seen you. I saw one of your films. The one where you were a jewel thief? I remember thinking some very naughty thoughts about you." She smiled flirtatiously.

Anna laughed as Ursula talked about her sister in law. "Yup, sounds a lot like my brother. We should get them to meet up," she joked.
She listened, her interest piqued, as the blonde woman gave her a quick run down of her life. She seemed to be level with it, rather than at odds or bitter, which made her think that Ursula was one of those people that went after what they wanted, and rolled with the punches. She admired a strong woman.
A slow smile spread on her lips as Ursula finally recognized her, and she nodded. "Yes, that was me. Not one of my better roles, though, I'll give you that. But if it inspired any kind of naughty thoughts, then I suppose it was well worth it."

Ursula smiled. She liked Anna's laugh. It seemed somehow full of energy and life, just like her. "I think getting them together would be bad for the both of us," she said with a wink. "But anyway, I'm sorry that your brother is such a jerk. It's one thing when it's your sister in law... but your own brother? Kenneth doesn't approve, but at least he keeps his disapproval quiet most of the time."
At Anna's last comment, Ursula moved a little closer to her, a seductive smile on her face. "I have to admit, I really didn't notice much about the plot of that movie. I stopped paying attention. The naughty thoughts... they kept me too distracted."
They were now standing very close, and Ursula leaned in, bracing her hands against the wall on either side of Anna. "Do you really want to go back in there?" she asked in a low voice.

topping herself from smiling, Anna kept her eyes locked on Ursula's, both of them with such intensity.
No, she didn't want to go back in there particularly. The guys she came with wouldn't be worried about her. Heck, one of them would probably end up taking Nathalia home. Which made her think about the girl.
"Your daughter is in there."

Ursula's eyes didn't leave Anna's. She loved her daughter, but she also knew her very well. She was a strong girl and not at all afraid to stand up for herself when necessary. And she knew all too well what was going on. She'd been there before. "Nathalia can take care of herself. I doubt she even expects me to be coming back in."
Sometimes Ursula did worry about Nathalia. She was too careless and chaotic in her personal life, and it left her open to getting hurt occasionally. But she was a Webb, and she was extraordinarily resilient. She always bounced back.

Anna figured as much, seeing how confident Ursula was, she assumed the same of her daughter, but thought she'd throw it out there anyway.
"Then no, there's really no reason for me to go back in there. Even if there was, the reason not to is better." She was still leaning casually against the wall, with Ursula close. The chilly night air didn't seem as cold anymore, and she liked the way the smell of smoke mixed on their breath between them.

Ursula smiled. It was at this point where she had to stop and think about what exactly she wanted from this. Was she just looking for a night? Or was she hoping for more?
She'd had plenty of one night affairs... some of them with straight women looking for a wild night. But it had been a while since she'd had something stable, something real. And she liked Anna a lot. There was something in her eyes that drew her in, made her want to know more.
If she wanted a possible relationship, her approach would be different than if she just wanted a night. But more importantly, what was Anna looking for? If she only wanted a night, and Ursula tried to make more of it... well, it would be awkward to say the least.
She took a breath and leaned in to kiss her. "Want to come back to my place for a drink?" she asked softly.

Anna was used to one night stands, even if they often left her feeling unsatisfied and somewhat less worthy. It was hard, as much as she traveled and worked and the hours that always changed, to keep something stable. The few flings that had gone beyond one night never really went much beyond that.
"Yes," She replied, assuming that this would be another one night stand and accepting it. "I would like that very much."

Ursula was thinking along the same lines. She wanted more than a one-night stand, but she didn't think that Anna wanted more than that. She was an actress, after all. She lived a life of instability and constant change. She probably didn't have time for a relationship. So she wanted to make whatever time she did have with Anna count.
"Great," Ursula said, taking Anna's hand and apparating quickly to her apartment.
They were standing outside the door, and Ursula took out her key to unlock the door. "Hang on, let me make sure the house elf went to bed," she said, poking her head inside.

Anna laughed. "Why, are you ashamed of the poor thing?"
She glanced down the hallway while Ursula checked on the elf, trying to make a judgement about the place before she went inside. She had been brought here so quickly she needed a moment to adjust to the bright light of the hallway. It was nondescript, which meant she would have to wait to actually see Ursula's apartment.
