Peter went up to the common room and he quickly looked in the mirror. He was nervous about what he looked like, but he just ran his hands through his hair. Sighing, Peter left the common room and headed straight to the Great Hall to meet Adelaide.
He was nervous about talking to her father. Her mother wasn't going to be that bad talking to. Mrs. Macrae was a sweet lady, but Professor Macrae, Peter wasn't so sure about. However, he would answer any questions there maybe. After all, he did ask Adelaide to the dance, and Peter wasn't that bad of a guy.
Arriving at the Great Hall, he waited at the door for Adelaide to meet him.

After having dropped her books off in the Ravenclaw Tower, and then making a pit-stop by her parents' flat to share her good news, Adelaide made her way down to the Great Hall. She was supposed to meet Peter there, he had invited her to sit with him and his friends at supper tonight. Adelaide was very excited. She had a date to the dance, and now she was going to be making friends outside of her own House.
She had already spoken with her mother, who had agreed to ease the idea onto her father. That was the worst of it, she knew. Both of her parents were very understanding, but Peter might not have been so at ease. Adelaide's father was a professor and that title came with a stigma; firm and possibly scary.
She practically skipped down the stairs which lead to the ground floor, then turned the corner to the large doors that lead to the Great Hall. There were already a number of students inside and the sound of happy chit chat floated out to greet her. Peter was waiting at the door and she crossed the room to him. "Sorry I took so long," she said in greeting.

A smile and a blush grew on Peter's face as he saw Adelaide come towards him. She was just so pretty. "N-no, it's alright. I just got here a few moments ago," he said with his smile still on his face. Peter knew that he needed to make it go away, but it wouldn't at the moment.
Remembering what he had seen a few other guys do, Peter extended his arm outward for her to take it. He wasn't sure what he was really supposed to do. After all Adelaide was the first girl to really express any kind of interest in him, but he was happy that she did. Hopefully it wasn't just because she didn't feel sorry for him or anything. He just wanted another good friend, and Adelaide was perfect for that, hopefully.
"Are you ready to go take a seat?"

"Oh. Good, then." She didn't want to make Peter wait, but the stop by her mother's had taken a little longer than expected. She was glad to hear that he hadn't been waiting long.
There was a barely visible tinge of pinkness to her cheeks when Peter offered his arm to her. It was like something out of the movies and it made her giggle. It was a happy giggle, not a judgmental one. "Sure. I'm starving now."

Peter laughed quitely at her giggle. "Great," he said leading her into the Great Hall. There were a few people that looked their direction, but Peter tried to ignore them. He didn't see that James, Remus, nor Sirius had arrived yet, but that was alright. That meant he could have more time talking to Adelaide alone, and he wouldn't be teased in any way about it at the moment.
He let Adelaide sit down first before he took his seat and he smiled gently at her. Peter thought that he was dreaming, and this was a dream that he didn't want to wake up from. "Thank you for coming to dinner with me."

She sat at an empty spot on the bench with plenty of room for Peter and his friends when and if they arrived. He sat beside her and she returned his smile. "Thanks for inviting me. I'm really excited to make friends outside of Ravenclaw." She laughed nervously. "Is that pathetic?"

"It's no problem. Although all the thanks goes to you, because you agreed to go to the dance with me. I never imagined that any girl would want to go to the dance with me, even if I did ask." Peter gave her a shy look. It was true. That was what he always thought. James, Sirius, and Remus had all the flirtation skills, and everything while Peter was just Peter. He was plain and he was always in the background. Now, he was having some kind of spotlight, and Peter actually liked it.
"No, no. It's not pathetic. I think it's great," he squeaked out. "I'm excited that I'm actually meeting someone new. You're the first person I've really talked to other than James, Sirius, and Remus."

Adelaide doubted very much that no girl other than she would go to the dance with Peter. He was nice and sweet. And if he could get past his shyness, she was sure he was funny too. But she couldn't fault him for being bashful, as she had the same problem. "Why did you ask me then, if you didn't think I would say yes? And, why wouldn't you think I would say yes? I don't think there are many people who would have told you no."
She was glad he could relate to her unintentional isolation. It wasn't that she didn't want to befriend more people, it just wasn't as easy for her as it was for some.

"I don't know why I asked, other than I know you mentioned it. Plus, the way you looked, you really wanted to go to the dance. I thought that I would take you since you wanted to go." The question of asking her to the dance just seemed to slip out of his mouth when he saw the look on her face whenever she had said something about going to the dance the first time. Peter just wanted to see her smile and be happy, so he thought he could possibly do that.
"I think I didn't about it really. And trust me Adelaide, there are people who would have said no. Not many girls would want to go to the dance with the boy that's in the background of the most popular boys in Gryffindor."

She wasn't one of those girls that worried much about her reputation, and she didn't have a big ego. So the fact that he had not given any prior thought to asking her to the dance did not offend her in the slightest. On the contrary, she thought it was kind of romantic, the silly romantic thing some bloke in some movie might do. Spur of the moment. She liked that.
"You're not in the background, Peter. I know you're name just as well as I know your friends'. And I doubt you would hang out with them if they treated you like you were in the background." What he was saying was nonsense and Adelaide thought that he was crazy for thinking that. Sure, the Sirius and James, even Remus were more outgoing than Peter, but that didn't mean they were in the foreground of the group.

Adelaide was sweet, and Peter's cheeks reddened again as she said that she had noticed him. It was a strange feeling knowing that he was noticed, but then again it was sort of nice. "Thank you Adelaide. You're really sweet." He smiled shyly. "Of course I already knew who you were too." Sirius, James, and Remus didn't really shove Peter into the background, but Peter never thought that people did notice him because of the attention of the other three.
"The boys are nice to me. Hanging out with them is pretty fun. It's just that the girls notice them more, but that's not really a problem. That just means that I can spend time with one girl, rather than having more wondering where I am. You seem like a really nice girl, and I thank you for everything. You're the first girl I've ever talked to other than my mum and Lily."

She didn't really see the point in wanting girls, or guys in her case, to notice her. Even if she was excited about Peter hanging out with her, and asking her to the dance, she just thought he was nice. She didn't have those confused feelings yet that Peter must have been having. But she did like that he seemed to like her. "Really? You're doing very well for a first timer. I would never have guessed it."

At her comment, Peter had to turn ten shades of red. "W-well, you're a nice person t-to talk to," he said with his shyness. "And you actually want to talk to me." Peter looked to the table. He immediately wished that his face would cool down. Looking back to her, he still had a shy look on his face. "You must talk with guys a lot in Ravenclaw, and have a lot of guys notice you."

She thought he was cute when he stuttered but knew better than to mention it. She did, however touch his hand in the hopes of calming him. Adelaide shrugged. "I don't know that they really notice me. But I talk to a lot of people in my house. We study together a lot."

Peter's expression of shyness softened as Adelaide touched his hand. He looked down at her hand which was touching his and a very gentle smile appeared on his face. "I think they notice you," he said. "You're really pretty and I don't see why they wouldn't. I noticed you before I knew that you were Professor Macrae's daughter." Again, Peter blushed at his little outburst. The color evened out on his face. "I'm sure that you just haven't really noticed them looking at you."

It was Adelaide's turn to blush. Her cheeks were the brightest they had ever been and were warm to the touch. She smiled but had to look away, embarrassed. Peter was so sweet it was hard to imagine that he could think of himself as background to anyone. Why would anyone in their right mind choose ego over kindness?
"I thought everyone knew I was his daughter," she said, directing her words at the floor instead of Peter. It had been hard in the beginning, since some of the other students assumed Adelaide would always receive high marks in Charms because her father taught the class. But those thoughts were quickly dropped when Adelaide purposely missed several questions on a surprise test and got a P. She did get a stern lecture from her father later, but Adelaide felt it was worth it.

"I didn't know at first," replied Peter. Usually he knew a little something about everyone, but it seemed like at first the only thing that Peter knew about Adelaide was that she was pretty. Other than that, he didn't know anything, that was until he heard her last name. "I guess I wasn't paying attention to your name." He looked sheepishly.
"Of course, after I knew that you were his daughter, I didn't think that you were any different from anyone else."

She felt better about Peter after he said that, if that were even possible. He seemed like a boy from a movie rather than one from real life, how could you not love that? "Really?" she asked, popping her head up and smiling at him. "I thought everyone did. But it makes me feel better knowing you didn't think that." As they spoke the room filled with students, all ready for a nice meal. Adelaide's eyes shifted from Peter's warm face to the front of the large room where the professors sat. Her parents were not there yet.

Once Adelaide's head popped up, Peter felt his courage starting to climb. "I guess it was one of those times that I wasn't paying attention. Plus, you're just a kid like the rest of us. You're parents just happen to work here. It's no big deal." He gave her a smile before looking around the hall after she looked away.
"So, Adelaide, I should give you a notice ahead of time that I don't really know how to dance. I've never done it before, but I promise that I will do my best not to make it horrible."

Her peers seemed more approving of her special situation now than when she had first started here a few months ago. She was glad Peter was one of those people, it seemed to endear him to her. And his modesty and honesty could only help. "That's alright. I've never been to a dance of any kind, so I don't know how good I am either. Just as long as I don't get hurt, I think it'll be okay."
