"I wouldn't ever hurt you," said Peter. He looked directly at her when he said it. Peter couldn't dream of hurting anyone like her. Adelaide was so sweet and pretty. "We can make it through the dance together. Maybe we'll be better at dancing than we think we will be." He gave a smile. "I think between us, we'll make it through alright."
Peter realized that he was still looking directly at her, and he looked away blushing once again. He couldn't help it.

James' stomach started to growl and knew that it was dinner time. He left the common room and headed toward the Great Hall. Peter had been missing during the afternoon and he didn't know where he got to, but it was alright. Maybe he'd catch him at dinner.
Upon entering the Great Hall, his eyes landed right on Peter. He was already here, but wait, there was someone else with him. A girl? Peter had a girl? A smirk appeared on James' face. He had to see this. It wasn't a bad thing that Peter had a girl with him, it was just the fact that Peter never had a girl with him, until now.
James walked over to the Gryffindor table and took a seat infront of him. "Evening Peter and," he took a moment to realize who it was. It was Professor Macrea's daughter. James raised an eyebrow in interest. Of course he knew who she was. "Adelaide, right?"

Adelaide smiled again at Peter's shyness, which mirrored hers perfectly. She was about to respond when James Potter interjected. "Yes, that's right," she answered, looking away from Peter to James. "Adelaide Macrae." His face looked as though he was amused by something but Adelaide couldn't begin to imagine what it could be. "Are you joining us for dinner?"

He bit back a saracastic remark that came to his head. James was going to be polite, in a way. "It's nice to meet you Adelaide," he said with a slight bow of his head. He looked to Peter with his amused look still on his face, but then looked back to Adelaide. "I will if you two don't mind," he said. "I didn't interupt anything by any chance, did I?"

She smiled at James, while wondering what that look on his face meant. But she knew it was probably a friend thing, or a guy thing, so she ignored it. "Well we were sort of expecting you. I mean, it is your House table after all." She laughed a little and looked to Peter. They had been talking about the dance, but she didn't think she should be the one to mention it to James. She knew she would want to be able to tell her friends.

Peter looked to James as he appeared at the table. His face turned red again. He shook his head and looked from Adelaide back to James. "I invited her to eat dinner with me," he said to him. "She's my date to the ball." Peter's ears turned redder by the second. It wasn't that he was embarassed by the fact that he was going to Adelaide, oh no. Peter couldn't have asked for anyone better to go with, but he was reddening because of the fact that he was shy.

He looked in between the two and raised an eyebrow in interest. "Your date to the ball? Are you serious?" James had to admit that he was shocked that Peter did have a date, but then again he had to say that he was proud of him. A grin started to form on his face. "Well, well. Peter Pettigrew has himself a date to the dance. I'll be."
James chuckled and took a seat across from him. "I have to say that I'm proud of you Peter. Just wait until Sirius hears about this."

At first Adelaide was worried that James was going to make fun of Peter for taking a Professor's daughter, or something like that. His exclamation of Are you serious? seemed a little offensive. But she kept her mouth shut as she always did, and James continued talking to Peter. Even the boy's I'll be sounded a little mocking. Adelaide looked away from both of the Gryffindor boys to that table. She should have just stayed with her own house.
But then Adelaide looked up, pleased. James was not going to make fun, he was shocked. And she could understand that. Peter was extremely shy, just the mention of her appreciating him turned his ears pink. So the fact that Peter had asked anyone, not her in general but anyone, must have been a huge surprise. She looked over to Peter, her head tilted in question. "Why? What's Sirius going to do?"

"What's Sirius going to do about what?" said Sirius as he walked up to the table and heard his name mentioned. "What'd I miss?"
He sat down next to James and turned his attention to Adelaide. "Well, hello there," he greeted her. "Aren't you a Ravenclaw? What brings you to our neck of the woods?"

"Hey Sirius," James greeted. He looked back to Peter who was looking shy again. "Our Peter here has invited someone to dinner," he said looking back toward Sirius. "Of course, there's nothing bad about that. People are always welcome to join us." James said this so that Adelaide wouldn't think of it as offensive.
"And she happens to be dear Peter's date to the ball." He grinned at Sirius. "I have to say that I'm proud of him."

"Really?" Sirius said, turning to Peter. "You sly dog, you... I ahd no idea. You know, I do believe you're the first one of us to actually get a date for the dance. I was gonna ask Kris, of course, but..." he sighed. "Look... don't tell Remus or anything... but we broke up. I think I'd better be the one to tell him. Now I can't decide if it would make Kris feel even worse if I asked Amy to go with me, or if I should ask someone else."
He really wanted to go to Amy, but after what had happened with Kris, he really didn't want her to think he was rubbing his face in it. For that same reason, he wasn't even sure Amy would say yes.

Peter couldn't help but turn slightly pink. The good thing was that James and Sirius weren't picking on him about it. They were actually proud of him, and that made him feel like he finally belonged somewhere. He snuck a quick glance at Adelaide before looking back to Sirius.
His eyes widened slightly. Peter shook his head. "I don't think you should ask her," he said. He had watched before and knew that there was tension between the girls. In fact, anyone could tell that. Plus, he didn't want Sirius to get into to much trouble with Remus. He helped bail him out one time, and this time he knew that he probably couldn't bail him out. "If you just broke up with Kris, I don't think it would be wise to go with Amy. I think that Remus would get mad and it wouldn't do anything but cause more trouble," Peter said sincerely.

Adelaide turned pink as Sirius Black joined them, just in time to hear her asking about him. She gave a faint smile as James explained why she was there, then she looked at her hands on her lap. She wouldn't interrupt the boys talking, she didn't know anything about any of it and felt it best to keep her mouth shut just now. She was the outsider here.

Sirius nodded. "Yeah, you're probably right, Pete," he said. "It's probably better if I go by myself. That way I won't offend Kris or make Remus too mad at me. Maybe I can dance with a few people while I'm there... or maybe I'll just watch." He looked at Adelaide. "You're a girl... do you think that's the right thing? Just go solo? I don't even know if Kris will bother going to the dance now..."

She wasn't looking at them, but she was listening. And when Sirius said 'you're a girl' she assumed he was speaking to her, being the only girl in the vicinity, and looked up. Adelaide was now more nervous to answer this question than she had been to come sit at their table with Peter. What if she said something stupid? How was she supposed to know who what the right thing was, when she had only ever liked one boy and he was sitting less than a foot away. And she had only realized she may have liked him about an hour ago. This was way beyond her capability. "I'd just do what would make you happy," she said in a small voice.

Sirius thought about that for a minute. "I don't know what I want," he replied. "I guess... well, I wish I could go back in time and handle everything better from the beginning. I would have stayed away from Amy... or I would have broken up with Kris when I realized that it wasn't working anymore." He sighed. "I think I'd better give up on love. Maybe I'll have more fun if I go alone or with someone who's just a friend."

Adelaide thought about suggesting a Time Turner, but knew that Sirius had very little chance of obtaining one of those. Most people don't even see them, let alone consider using one. The only reason it popped into her head as a solution was that she had been reading an article in a magazine earlier in the day that referenced them.
Adelaide looked over at Peter. As young and confused as she was about the whole dancing/dating thing, she knew she didn't want Peter to be taking her to the Yule Ball as a friend. Of course, would he feel the need to do so, she would still go with him.
