"Torture you?" Claire knew that she did torture him when she would resist him, but he also tortured her so it was a fair match. "I did enjoy it awhile back, but now its just a sense of if you will respect my wishes and not try to pressure me into doing something." Her hand was still on his face. She wasn't just going to rush to him and let him take her. She wanted to see if he would really do what she asked, or if he was just playing with her mind again.

"You do torture me," Edmund said, his voice raising slightly. "You have no idea. I actually called a girl by your name the other night. I have dreams about you... And I don't know if it's just because you keep denying me, or if it's something else. You have me turned upside down and I don't know which end is up anymore. If you want me to promise that I'l stay with you, I'll do it, and if you want me to promise that I won't look at another girl, I'll do that, too. But please... I can't wait anymore. I think I might just go insane."

When he told her about calling another girl by her name, she didn't know what to feel. Flattered or disturbed?
Claire slowly let her hand fall from his face. He said that he would promise her what she really wanted, but she had to give a little. What was really holding her back now? Fear? Yes. She didn't know what she was feeling around him. The more she thought about it, the more it seemed like she fell hard for him. Of course, she thought about that awhile back. She fell for him, and in a way that scared her. He could break his promise in an instant once he got what he wanted, but Edmund was usually a man of his word. The way he looked early, vulernable, kept playing in her mind.
"I'm not the only one that tortured anyone. You've tortured me. I haven't been able to leave my apartment for a couple days! I've cooked way more than I ever have. You've been stuck in my mind ever since then and I've tried to get you out. I've tried, honestly. Even while I was cooking, which is my escape, you came to mind. You're everywhere! You have no idea how bad you've tortured me!"
Claire sighed and her eyes didn't leave him. "And is that all you think about? Sleeping with me? What would you do afterwords if you did? Get bored? Sneak off in the middle of the night?"

Almost against his will, Edmund broke into a grin. She'd stayed in her apartment for a week because of him? That gave him hope... it meant he was getting to her just as badly as she was to him.
"I can't imagine ever getting bored of you," he said simply.

Claire's softened look turned into an annoyed one when he grinned. Of course that was all he thought about. It made her angry that all he just grinned. "Oh, I bet," she said continuing to look directly at him. How could she have thought that he would change his ways? How could she have thought that he would look at her more than just some girl to sleep with? She rolled her eyes.
"I don't think you're ever going to change," said Claire. "All you want is something to keep your bed warm at night and I be damned if I'll do that for you. You'll just have to find some other girls to do it for you. I'm sure that they will be more than willing to do so." Her eyes remained soft, but her attitude didn't. "Until you can prove that you want something more than just someone to sleep with, I suggest you forget about me." She took a step away from him.

Edmund was taken by surprise at her reaction. He never knew just what was going to set her off, and this was no exception. What had he done wrong? He was being sincere here, more than he had ever done with anyone before. And she was attacking him.
"I swear, I will never understand you," he said angrily. "I'm pouring my bloody heart out to you, and you start accusing me all over again. How can I possibly change when you won't even give me the chance?"

"I will never understand you either," she replied. "And I know you are, and I told you stuff that I never thought I would. But, you can't really blame me Edmund. I told you that I'm not ready to sleep with you yet, but you insist that you want to. Just spending a couple days time together just to see how things would work out, and then the possiblity of sleeping together could come up, but that is not what you want. Relationships are not your thing, apparently. I'm not getting any younger Edmund. I can't always keep this charade of trying to get a different guy whenever the need strikes me. Until you are ready to spend actual time together and then possibly worry about the next step, then I can't give you that chance. I'm not the girl you can just woo over with a few words and take me home." Claire just told him that she wanted a relationship, and she knew that he wasn't the commitment type. If he could change like that, then she could actual give him the better chance.

Edmund ran a hand through his hair in frustration. "What do you want from me, Claire? A commitment? Do you want me to propose to you? I'm not the marying type... But I want you. More than I've ever wanted anyone. I don't know what else to tell you."

Her look softened again as he said he wanted her. She wanted him too. The thought of him possibly proposing to her, just to have her is what softened her look.
Claire tilted her head a little to the side, studying his eyes for a moment. "Yes Edmund, I want a commitment. I need a commitment. I don't want to grow old alone." She knew that she had to get out of there before she would do something big. "Just think on it." Claire took a few more steps away and started to walk to where she left her jacket.

Edmund couldn't let her go. He grabbed her by the arm and pulled her to him. "You're going to be the death of me," he said, staring down at her. She was like an addiction, and he couldn't get enough of her. He bent down and kissed her roughly, completely unaware of the scene they were making in the club.

Claire didn't know how to respond to him just grabbing her arm the way he did, or his comment. "Edmund, what," she was cut off by him kissing her. Claire had to admit that she didn't fully expect him to just grab her like that. She couldn't help herself, no matter how many times she tried to fight it, she kissed him back and put a hand gently on his face.
Realizing what she was doing, Claire pulled away and looked back up at him. She didn't know what to say. She started to walk away. Claire had to get out now because her self control was slipping, fast.

And once again, she was walking away from him. "Dammit, Claire... why? Why are you always walking away from me?" he cried. "Are you just trying to get me to chase you? Because sooner or later, I'm going to stop chasing you if you don't give me some sign that it's worth it!"
He stood there, watching her, his eyes blazing. He was making an arse of himself over her. She always did this to him, and he was getting very tired of it. If she wanted to walk away, maybe he should just let her.

Once she picked up her jacket, she walked right back up to Edmund. She looked at him and she stood up on her tip toes. Claire leaned in and kissed him. It was full of promise. She pulled away and looked at him again. "Just think about what I said, and think about if you really want to or not. I told you what I wanted, now it's just up to you to figure out if you really care. You know where to find me whenever you want to let me know."
She looked at him one more time and then started for the door. "Good night Edmund," she called behind her.

Edmund watched her go, a stunned expression on his face. He felt like he'd been running around in circles and now he had spots dancing before his eyes. When she was gone, he strode quickly from the dance floor and headed straight for the bar. "Firewhiskey," he growled. "Leave the bottle."
He stood there for a moment, fairly boiling over with rage. Then he pounded his fist against the stop of the bar. "Damn Claire!" he hissed.

Zachary had been dancing with Veronica not far away from Edmund and the blonde. Since neither of them had been especially quiet, he had heard pretty much everything. In fact, so had most of the patronage of the club.
Zach couldn't help but be amused by the whole thing. Since he had fallen in love with Susie, he now easily recognized the signs in his friend. Imagine... Edmund Fairfax in love! He wouldn't have believed it if he hadn't seen it with his own eyes.
When Edmund stalked off the dance floor, Zachary made a polite excuse to Veronica and headed over to the bar to have a little chat with his old friend.
"That was quite a spectacle between you two," he commented casually.

Edmund rolled his eyes and turned to Zach. "Come to gloat, have you? I'm used to having any woman I want, but that one... she keeps getting away. She's got me running around in circles and I'm not even sure it's worth the trouble anymore."

Zachary shook his head. "Not gloating at all," he said. "I'm not going to lie to you, it's kind of amusing to see you or all people in such a state, but I promise you, I'm not laughing. I've been where you are... and I'm not over it yet."
He nodded to the bartender, who handed him a glass before setting a glass and bottle in front of Edmund.

Edmund poured himself a glass of firewhiskey and gulped it down. "What do you mean? Been where?" he asked, clueless. "Tortured by a woman? It's true what they say, you know. The female of the species is more deadly than the male. That woman's going to kill me."

Zach just smiled. When he'd fallen for Suzie, he hadn't fought so hard against it... in his case, he was already in too deep before he realized it. But after he'd left her, he'd gone through that dark period... much like Edmund was experiencing now. He drank too much, gambled too much, and tried too hard to convince himself that he wasn't in love. Edmund was clearly in pretty deep... so much so that he didn't even realize it.
"Because you're in love with her," he said.

Edmund turned to look at Zachary as if he had two heads. "What? I'm not... Zach, this is me you're talking to... I don't fall in love. Lust, yes, not love. Claire just drives me crazy because she keeps denying me. She's the one who always gets away... and I can't rest until I can convince her to give in."
