Thane grumbled when he realized he was being ousted from his room. This meant he'd have to share with one of his brothers. He hoped it was Timothy, at least he wouldn't make it a life's mission to annoy him whenever he wanted to read. But he also knew that by age he was likely to be stuck with Xavier as a roommate and hence was grumbling. "Dad, do I have to?"

Zachary waved his hand dismissively. "Now, now, I wouldn't want to disrupt any of the children from their rooms," he said. "After all, I came without notice, and I have no idea how long I'll be staying. I could sleep on the couch, if necessary. I've stayed in worse conditions in my travels." He gave a quick look at Thane, who looked less than pleased by the prospect of sharing with one of his brothers.
Zachary was feeling more and more like he shouldn't have come; that he no longer belonged here. Their lives had all moved on and changed, and he, even for all of his moving around, remained stuck in one place emotionally and mentally. Their lives no longer included him, and he was surprised to realize that it bothered him a little.

"Nonsense," Thatcher said, sending a warning glare towards Thane. "No brother of mine is going to sleep on the couch. It would just be for a night or two, anyway, until we can get one of the spare rooms appropriately set up."
Why was it his children's mission to make him look like a weak man? He decided that soft spot he and Alicia indulged for them was gone after tonight, and it would be a rude awakening for all of them. Well, except Justin, who was an adult now, and Xavier, who behaved.

"Of course you'll stay Zachary," Alicia spoke up. She knew how her children reacted with each other and she wasn't going to have anyone causing any trouble while they had company. "Thane, Timothy, I'm sure you two won't mind sharing a room with each other for just one night, would you? It would give Tibby and I enough time to get the guest room ready for Zachary to sleep in." She looked over her glass at the two boys as she took a drink.

Tanya had the feeling her own offer had been ignored so she turned her attention to Alec instead. Of course her brother would want to stay at home, she'd often considered returning as well but she knew her room had vanished long ago when she'd started working at St. Mungo's with her apartment nearby.
She continued to tease Alec under the table as she watched her brothers talk, though on the surface she was as smiling and attentive as ever.

Thane looked at his mom, thankful she'd at least let him stay with Timothy. And what was one night? "Yes, mum." He still didn't like having to leave his room, but he didn't object to his mother. He really was a mother's boy and surprisingly usually listened to her. He watched his uncle though, trying to figure out why he'd leave for so long just to come back now.

Zachary hesitated, looking at Thane uncertainly. "If you're sure," he said. "I really don't want to impose. I know I came in unannounced, and with no definite plans. I really wasn't expecting to see everyone here... I thought the children would be at school."
He felt oddly insecure and out of place... two feelings which were not only unpleasant but also quite unfamiliar to him. His family felt like virtual strangers to him, and he imagined they probably felt the same way about him. Here, he didn't have his charm or 100-watt smile to dazzle everyone with.
Turning to Tanya, the one he'd always been closest to, he nodded his head. "If I decide to stay longer, Tanya, I may take you up on your offer of your apartment, just so I don't drive our brother crazy. But tell me, how have things been with you? Still working at St. Mungo's, are you? Last I recall, you were just an intern."

Alec was barely paying attention to any of this. Really, the return of the prodigal whatever... switching room arrangements... it was all very trivial compared to the main issue on Alec's mind. This was, of course, the terribly enticing torture Tanya was working on him underneath the table. She was close to driving him mad. It took nearly every ounce of self-control he had not to grab her and throw her on the table and take her in the middle of the platter of mashed potatoes. How was he to eat or engage in conversation when her hands were exacting such sweet torture on him?

Tanya turned a very sweet smile at Alec before addressing her brother. "I am currently assigned to the ICU in St. Mungo's. I see the worst of the cases which the survival rate is shoddy at best to begin with. But I'm happy to say most of my patients do survive." the ones I have no reason to kill she thought silently. "Did you know that the success rate of survival increases in purebloods? I think it has something to do with muggle prone weaknesses in the body are less likely to withstand as much pain and magical maladies. Though with my work I'm not home much, and I often find myself not at home. But you're more than welcome if you decide to stay longer, its a large apartment and I have two spare rooms."
She didn't stop torturing Alec. In fact she discretely pulled out her wand under the table and cast a silent spell to relax him so she could torture him all over again and not let him loose his control until she was ready for him to.

Zachary listened to Tanya talk about her work with a slight smile on his face. He was proud of Tanya, of course. She was always the most driven of the three of them, the one who had known what she wanted and went after it. Thatcher was the more responsible one, and he... well, he was the one who skipped through life with no direction. It had never bothered him before, but after his time in America... something was eating at him that he couldn't quite identify.
"I'm glad to hear it, Tanya," he said. "You always were good at whatever you put your mind to."
He knew sooner or later, they were going to start asking him what he'd been doing all this time, and why he hadn't even written in so long. He was already trying to come up with flippant answers in his head to cover the truth of what he'd been doing.

Justin was the one that remembered the most about Zach of the five siblings and he had a curiosity that often got him in trouble. But he couldn't help but ask the very questions that came to mind first. Plus it was a way to keep Gwen in suspense of answering her what her gift was.
"So what have you been doing for the last three years, Uncle? I admit I have been away on business a few times since you've been gone, but I manage to come home whenever I'm able to." It was true, he was actually much like Zach at least in some ways, he had a sense of wonderlust. However his was channeled towards the Dark Lord's bidding. Though he too was often gone up to six months at a time, but he at least tried to come home and stay when he could. But the shared interest of his travels were something he acutally was curious about where Zach had managed to keep himself for all that time.

Well, that hadn't taken long. He hadn't had time to craft an interesting lie. Typical that Justin would be the one to ask him; aside from Thatcher and Tanya, he was the one who knew him the most. And he was sure that, after the children had gone to bed and Tanya and Alec had gone home, Thatcher would begin the detailed interrogation about what he'd been doing. But for now, he needed to give an answer.
"Oh, a little of this, a little of that," he said, waving his hand casually. "As I mentioned, I've been in America for more than a year. Just taking a tour, seeing the country. Doing a little gambling here and there, just the usual. It's a lovely country, America is. I don't suppose you've been there, Justin?"

"Actually, yes.. about two years ago I was in Salem on a trip for about two months. It was a very quaint town but luckily I wasn't stuck there for too long." Just long enough to find my target, seduce and then kill her, he thought to himself.
"So what places did you visit while you were there, anything interesting? I find a lot of trouble seems to follow the Americans that I just don't care to associate with if I can avoid it. Too many mudbloods there."

Zachary didn't allow his smile to slip. Much of his travels were actually spent with muggles. He found that they truly knew how to have fun, since they didn't have magic to fall back on. He also found that they were particularly easy to take advantage of... He forced his mind from that train of thought.
"Salem, yes... I never made it up to that part of the country, actually. I spent a great deal of time in the coastal towns... I took quite a liking to Atlantic City for a while. Overrun with muggles, of course, but there's a pretty good wizarding community nearby. Also spent some time in Miami, and in Las Vegas. I was in California for the last six months or so..." He trailed off at the mention of California; the less he mentioned of that, the better.

"Perhaps next time I am called to visit there I can take you along as my tour guide. I wouldn't mind seeing California, though Miami and Las Vegas sound rather drab. What made you decide to come back home and grace us with your presense? Did you miss us that much?" Justin was only making conversation but he was still interested. After all, he had been gone a long time and most recently without writing and there should have been plenty to share from three years worth of travels in the Americas.

"I don't think I'll be going back to California," Zachary said, the smile vanishing from his face. "I didn't care for it much." He added this last bit quickly, so as not to look as if he was hiding anything. He avoiding looking at Tanya or Thatcher, both of whom would surely catch something in his expression.
He smiled again, but it suddenly felt forced. He could only hope it didn't look that way. "I'm not really sure why I felt compelled to come back, actually. There were other places I wanted to see in America, but I guess I got bored with wandering. And I have missed you, all of you." It was the only thing that came out of his mouth that wasn't a lie. "It was just time to come home."

"Well I for one am glad you are home. Hopefully this time you might actually stay. Maybe we should find you a wife to settle you down finally." She winked at her brother, it was an old threat but she couldn't help it. She herself was not married and couldn't see herself ever having children of her own, she left that job to Thatcher and Alice. But at least she had the grace to stay close to her family, though if Thatcher had ever made an issue of it she would have done the proper thing and married for family alliances. Zach on the other hand needed some reason to tie him to the proverbial floor. A man to pass on the Scotts family name, and remember his family ties without going off galavanting around and forgetting his family.

Zachary turned to his sister. "I'm glad to be home, actually," he said quietly. "And I'm sorry I've been gone so long." At the mention of him getting married, however, he waved his hand again and laughed. "Ah, Tanya, you've been trying to marry me off since Hogwarts. I may be inclined to stay a while, but I don't really see myself getting married. I'm just not the marrying type. Not when there are so many places to see, and beautiful women to meet. Right, Justin?" he added, grinning at his oldest nephew.

Justin chuckled, he knew that argument.. she'd been trying to use it on him too. "Don't give in, 'cause if you do then I'll be next." He saw Tanya smirk at him and he chuckled again, "Well it's true! You know that if you managed to hogtie him into marriage I'd be your next victim and I have no intention of getting married anytime soon if I can help it."

"Don't temp me to try harder. I'm sure I could come up with suitable matches for both of you and I know how to make you agree too." She was smiling though, she enjoyed teasing them despite the fact that she knew it was true. The threat though was more fun in this case than the doing. With the right amount of torture, people would agree to the most surprising things, and she knew her brother and nephew knew it too. Luckily she had other things more pressing. Although, she would like to see more Scotts children to take the name. Especially with the waywardness of three of Thatcher's children.
