Adelaide braved the snow for the chance to sit outside. In actuality it was not snowing, and there was only a light layer of white powder on the ground, but the air was chilly and the wind strong. To an eleven year old, it felt like she was climbing Mount Everest.
There were benches lining the beds where the flowers slept, and with her gloved hand she wiped away the melting snow for a place to sit. It looked dry enough but when she sat the cold water seeped through her clothes, making her shudder.

Peter walked around the school without following James, Sirius, and/or Remus for once. He wanted to walk around on his own since the boys seemed to have something important that they were doing. James seemed to be contemplating something, Sirius seemed a little lost, and Remus was doing whatever.
With his scarf wrapped around his neck and his coat on, Peter stepped out into the courtyard. It was peaceful here to say the least. He was always off on his own, and the courtyard was usually one of the best places to be.
He noticed that someone else was already out there. Upon noticing who it was, Peter became slightly nervous. Whenever he was around girls, he was always nervous. It wasn't so bad around Lily anymore because she was always there. Peter walked closer to her. "H-Hi," he nearly stuttered out.

She looked up at the sound of footsteps on slushy snow. It was Peter, a Gryffindor boy a year ahead of her. Though she hadn't had time to really talk with a lot of people outside of her own house, she had tried to at least familiarize herself with the others in case a conversation occurred.
"Hi," she said smiling at him. "Are you cold?" she asked, noting his stutter. She thought his lips were shivering.

Peter, of course, knew who she was. Adelaide from Ravenclaw and a first year. He wasn't like he stalked her or anything, he had just found out like a normal person.
Great. His stutter was obvious, although she didn't make fun of him, which a few girls had in the past. Peter and girls were an awkward thing. He was always nervous around them. He always wished that he had James, Sirius, and Remus' charm and wit in order to get a girl. Peter wouldn't have switched from girl to girl. Once he found one he liked, he would have stayed with her. But Peter was Peter. Quite, shy, nervous Peter.
"No," he said. "Not yet I'm not." Peter looked at her for a minute. She was defintably pretty. "I didn't mean to stutter a few moments ago." His eyes drifted from hers to the ground for a moment. Peter found himself not being able to look into her pretty eyes for too long. "I'm Peter."

"Well I'd use a drying spell before sitting down or you will be cold. The bench is still wet." She tried to dry it some more with her hand, not having learned the drying spell yet. "I know. I'm Adelaide." She offered her hand. But realizing that her glove was wet from wiping the seat she took it back, pulled off the glove, and tried again. Her hand had been warm inside the glove, and now the cold air stung.

"I don't know the drying spell yet," he said shyly. He wished he did because maybe that would have impressed her slightly. Peter's cheeks turned pink when Adelaide said she knew him. "And I know you're name too." His gaze dropped to the ground again. He hoped that didn't sound too awkward.
Peter noticed that she stuck her hand out. He pulled his hand out of his coat pocket and shook Adelaide's hand. To him, it was nice and warm, but he slowly let go as his cheeks remained pink. "It's nice to meet you."

"Well I guess you'll be cold with me then," he replied. She put her glove back on and rubbed her hands together to get the chill off. "Come sit. You know, if you're close enough our body heat will magnify and keep us warmer." She was such a little Ravenclaw, but young enough to not know the implications of her words. Certainly a few of the older students had used that line in a completely different way.

Peter looked at her curiously. She was inviting him to sit beside her? He shook off the thought and wiped away some of the snow on the bench and slowly took a seat beside her. Once he felt the coldness seep through his robes, Peter moved slightly closer to Adelaide. His arm brushed hers and Peter looked down shyly.
She seemed nice enough, and Peter realized that he should try and have a little bit of courage. Peter started to feel warmer anyway once he was beside her, but he gave her a smile nevertheless. "Thanks," he said. "So, what brings you out here?"

"I just like the smell of the snow." Adelaide leaned forward and brushed some snow off the bushes in front of her. They were still green underneath. "What are you doing out here?" She spoke without looking at him, though she meant nothing by it. She just wanted to look at the plants a little more.

Peter gave an 'oh' sound. He looked around at the powder around them. "Well, my friends seem to all be doing something on their own, so I thought I'd try to find something to do on my own." Peter shrugged for a moment and then leaned up to peer at the plant she was observing. He was never good with conversation.
"Do you like Herbology," he found himself asking before he had time to think.

"I do. It's not my best subject, but it's interesting enough." Adelaide looked over at Peter. "Do you?" She shivered slightly at another chilly breeze and folded her arms tightly around her for warmth.

"Herbology is alright. I'm not the best, but I'm not the worst either," said Peter with shyness. Why did he have to be shy? His cheeks turned red, but he hoped that Adelaide didn't think anything of it.
He noticed that she shivered and Peter slid a little closer to her, in hopes of warming her just a little. If he had enough courage, he would have put his arm around her, but he didn't want her to slap him or anything. "Um, if you get really cold, and if you want, we can go down to the kitchens and get hot chocolate, or anything you like."

That was about the same way she felt about the subject. She didn't know anyone who really excelled in Herbology and figured it was the general so-so class. It was pretty hard to fail, if you could just remember a few names and weren't too terrible at drawing different plants. She was an awful artist but managed to get good marks nevertheless.
She saw his cheeks redden, and innocently associated it with his request to go inside where it was warmer. The cold from the bench had already seeped through her pants and even though her hands were covered she was quite certain her fingers were red with chill. "That sounds nice. And I love hot chocolate."

Peter smiled as she agreed. "Great," he said. "Hot chocolate is my favorite for when it gets cold. Maybe the house elves have cookies too." Since the coldness was making his legs extremely cold, he stood up and offered her his hand to help her up. "Are you ready to go in where it's warm?" Maybe Peter would ask Lily later about what the warming spell was, just in case he went back outside with Adelaide sometime. He found himself wanting to impress her some how, but he wasn't sure how. Peter was no James Potter, Sirius Black, or Remus Lupin. They seemed to know what they were doing most of the time. Hopefully he wouldn't embarrass himself in front of Adelaide once he did try to impress her.

She took his hand as she stood, and nodded. She couldn't wait to get inside. She had enjoyed her short time outside but was looking forward to sitting in the warm kitchen with Peter and cocoa. She wiped the back of her pants as if she had snow there, but it was just the cold and nothing more.
"I love the snow," Adelaide said as they walked toward the castle. "But I can't wait for spring. It's so beautiful out here with all the flowers blooming."

Peter didn't let go of Adelaide's hand as they started walking towards the inside of the castle. Her hand felt cold, and Peter's were actually warm. He had kept his hands in his pockets to keep them that way, and at the moment, he was glad that they were warm. Maybe they would keep Adelaide's hand warm.
He held the door open as they walked inside and gave her a smile. "Spring is nice, but I do like the Winter too. Great time for hot chocolate, and it'll be Christmas time soon." Peter never received any gifts from anyone, except from one from his mother and father. That would be all he ever get, but he still liked when it became Christmas, although he had usually spent it alone. His parents were usually busy enough for him not to go home. Maybe this year was going to be different. Hopefully he could possibly spend it with James, Remus, and Sirius. He would even be happy to spend it with Adelaide, but her family was already at school and she would probably be off with them.
Reaching the kitchens, Peter reached up and tickled the pear, causing the door to open up. Walking in, there was more instant warmth than walking into the castle. One of the house elves appeared. "Two hot chocolates and two cookies please," he said to her. She disappeared and Peter led Adelaide over to a place to sit.

Adelaide liked that he kept her hand in his while they walked. It was warm and comforting. It was nice to have him guide her as well, though she'd known for a while where the kitchens were. The heat from the castle attacked her as they came inside and she removed her gloves, putting her hand right back into Peter's. The heat from the kitchen was even more intense and while Peter requested something to drink she removed her cloak and slung it over her arm. When Peter showed her to a place to sit she drapped her cloak over the back of her chair.
"I love Christmas. All the decorations and the smell of the Christmas trees mixed with peppermint." She was a fan of sweet smells, if he hadn't figured it out by now. "Oh, and the Yule Ball. My mum is so excited about dressing me up. But I don't know how to dance so I'll probably just watch everyone else. But it'll be fun, don't you think?"

After he had pulled out Adelaide's seat, as he had seen many guys do for girls before, he took off his own cloak and drapped it on the back of his chair before taking his seat. The little house elf appeared with their hot chocolate and cookies. Peter thanked her, and the house elf sccuried off to do other work.
Looking back to Adelaide, Peter nodded in agreement. "I love the smell of peppermint too. The house elves make awesome little Christmas tree cookies with a green icing on them." He smiled in thought. Thanksgiving hadn't even passed, and he was already thinking about Christmas time. For a few moments, Peter had forgotten about the Yule ball until she mentioned it. He wasn't even sure he was going. What girl would say yes to a shadow of James, Sirius, and Remus? Adelaide seemed pretty excited about it. "I don't know," he replied. "I'm not sure I know how to dance either, and I don't have anyone to go with."
He glanced down to the little table top, and then an idea hit him. "Would you like to go with me to the dance," Peter asked shyly before he could think about what he was asking.

She was going to say that they could 'not dance' together, but then he asked her to go with him and she was glowing with excitement. She hadn't thought she would have a date. Definitely not such a sweet one. She figured she would either go alone or go with someone just because neither of them had a date by the day of the ball. "Really? You'd want to go with me?"

Peter heard the excitment in her voice and he looked up from the table. He thought that maybe she would turn him down like most other girls probably would, but Adelaide did the opposite. She asked the question he would have asked her if she would have just automatically said yes.
He nodded. "Yes," he said. "I want to go to the dance with you." Adelaide was so pretty, and she was nice. Peter thought that he was going to fall over because she hadn't turned him down.
