Adele hadn't realized when she said goodbye the other night that she was still wearing Professor Renneau's cloak, and she wondered why he hadn't stopped her and asked for it back.
Whatever, it didn't matter anyway, she would just drop it off in his classroom, and it would be there the next time he had class.
She opened the door to the classroom, stepping inside before she even realized he was actually there.

His plan worked and it was all over his smug face but the look quickly dropped before Adele could see it, "Oh..Miss Graham...ah I see you're returning my cloak..." he nodded getting up from his seat and walking towards her.

"Uhm..." her brows creased for a moment, and she nodded. "Sorry, yes, I am. I didn't realize I still had it the other night."
She waited until he was closer and held it out to him. "Thank you. Are you about to have class?"

No he just hadn't left his class in hopes that she might show up to return his cloak, "No not for a while anyway, take a seat." he offered ignoring the cloak for now if he took it she'd have an easier opportunity to just leave. He returned to his desk and pulled something from one of the drawers. It was...muggle but he had to admit that oreos were heaven sent no matter how you looked at it.
"How've you been?" stupid question he realized a second later, "I mean...with the arrangements...the funeral." he was talking quietly, really he didn't think she should have to go alone and he was wondering who was taking care of her now.

She sighed, bringing the cloak back to her body, and watching him as he left her standing there. She just wanted to give his cloak back so that she could go, and she didn't want to talk about the funeral.
"We're having a memorial on Saturday," she said softly, still standing where she was.

He nodded his eyes lowered, "And did you arrange all that?" he asked, if there was no one left then she must have arranged the ceremony, everything...it was such a large burden and he was sorry that she was carrying it, doubly so that she was doing it alone.

"I helped," Adele said, blinking. "His wife did most of the work." And after the funeral, she would probably never hear from the woman again. Still, it had helped her a lot that there was someone else to deal with her brother's death so that she could ignore it for a bit longer.

He nodded, that was good. He bit his lip hesitant to ask his next question but determined to do so anyway, "Did he have legal custody of you?" Caleb asked. He sincerely wondered how she was taking care of herself, how she was paying for school, for books, for clothes? What did she have left in this world.

She gave him that assessing, judging look she seemed to do so well, as if she was just tolerating him, and then she seemed to spring into action.
She folded his cloak and set it on the desk closest to her. "I just wanted to return this, so here you are. I should let you prepare for your class."

They were playing the game again, only he knew the rules and he knew how he was going to have to play this, he tried, honeslty he always tried to be nice first, but she never responded until he was relentless.
"Oh no, no running, you forget how persistant I am." he told her dropping all pretenses.
"Talk to me Adele."

"About what?" Adele asked, frustrated. She hated that he always forced her to do this. He should realize that yes, she trusted him, but no, she didn't want to get close. You get attached and people disappear. They die.

"Anything, I want you to talk to me about anything, about you, about your brother...I want you...to not be alone anymore...to not feel that you are..." he said a strange something choking in the back of his throat.

Adele's fingers clenched and unclenched in small fists for a moment.
"I don't know what you want to hear," she said. "No, my brother did not have guardianship of me. My grandmother does. But she's in a... a facility. And on a really good day, she might remember my name, but most of the time she thinks I'm just another nurse. Or maybe what you want to hear is that I'm not dealing with any of this because I have 7 more months of school before I have to go home and realize that things are different. Or maybe you want to hear that I'm actually fine, and everything's going well and normal."

"I just want to hear the truth..." he whispered after she admitted to him certain truths that she shouldn'tve had to deal with, he was sorry about her grandmother, and he understood her desire to not deal with it, as well as her desire to pretend that everything was fine or at least tell herself that everything was fine.
"And I want to help..."

Adele shook her head. "I don't know what the truth is anymore," she said, shrugging slightly. It was hard to be a fighter when the enemy, in her case, Death, kept beating her down.
"And you can't help, really. But thank you."

He sighed, "I know it would be easier for you if I didn't.' he told her coming to sit by her, " I know that it'd be easier if there wasn't somebody else you could learn to depend on, come to trust and want around...because then it wouldn't hurt so badly if you lost them. I know why you push others away and are afraid to take a chance. I know that you're hiding from life because living and enjoying life only makes death that much more painful."

Adele unconsciously took a step backwards when he came to sit near her.
"Why do you do that?" She asked, shaking her head. She hated how he just pushed her and pushed her and assumed he knew her so well. He didn't know her at all.
"You don't know what goes on in mind, Professor."

"No I suppose I don't." he admitted, "I can only tell you...how I've felt for the past...many years." he said the latter with a bit of a smile. He had kept his jaded outlook for so long allowing so few into his heart and close to him, it wasn't until he met this girl did he realize he needed to change.

She was quiet for a long time, unsure how to answer him, and even unsure of what she was thinking about.
She finally sank into a seat near him, but not too close. "I just want to be the next one it comes after," she admitted softly. But no, for some reason, whatever curse there was wanted to torture her.

"Death?" he asked though there was a small hardening around his mouth, he didn't want her to want to be the next one, he wanted her to fight and see some spirit shown but he had to wonder if death hadn't killed that as well. Merlin knew she was entitled, but he hated to think of it all the same.
