Danny laughed at his suggestive comment. "Well, we would be married, afterall. You realize, of course, that I'll expect a huge wedding, with a very expensive dress, and a diamond the size of Ireland. You should be prepared."
She was teasing him, even when she said she was waiting to get married until he did. Danny didn't really see marriage in her future. For one, she was always the girl next door type... always the best friend, never the lover. And she was okay with that. Her career was important to her, and she didn't know many men who would understand why she worked so much. It was just like any muggle doctor. The hours were long, and you had to be dedicated. Ross was just about the only one who understood that.
She smiled. "Dance with me?"

"An expensive dress? Hm. I wouldn't mind that as long as it looked nice on you. Plus, I'm sure my mum wouldn't mind helping you go all out, and I would of course make sure you have the biggest diamond I could find. It would have to be special after all." Ross gave her a grin before tossing the contents of his glass down his throat.
Ross didn't really ever see himself getting married, unless it was to a girl like Danny. If he could find another one like her, then he would marry them at some point, but as of right now, he didn't see himself getting married.
"I would love to," he replied Ross stood up and offered her his hand. "Let's go."

She grinned when he downed his drink, and she did the same, setting her glass back on the bar. A couple more of those, and she wouldn't care about how early she might have needed to wake up, or how badly she was convinced she danced. She didn't care a whole lot now, though, granted.
She walked with him to the dance floor, neither one of them really leading the way, until they reached the middle of the floor. There, she turned to face him just as a new song started. She had heard it a couple of times, but hardly kept up with muggle music so she wasn't sure who it was. It didn't matter... it was good to dance to.

Edmund sat at a table near the edge of the dance floor, drinking his customary firewhiskey. It seemed he drank it more often lately, since his last encounter with Claire. Damn Claire. Why couldn't he get her out of his head? There were so many women out there--blondes, brunettes, redheads, short ones, tall ones, thin ones, curvy ones--why was he so fixated on Claire? Was it really just because he couldn't have her? Or was it something more? Damn her.
Glancing over the top of his glass, he saw a couple nearby. They were dancing, of course. He might not have even given them a second look if the girl hadn't been so pretty. She had a perfect figure and a beautiful face. Probably one of the prettiest girls in the club that night. Feeling bored and desperate to forget about Claire, he set down his drink and impulsively walked over to the couple. Tapping the man on the shoulder, he said, "May I cut in?"

Ross was enjoying himself while he danced with Danny. That is until he felt a tap on his shoulder. He stopped dancing with Danny and looked at the gentleman who got his attention. Ross immediately got a bad feeling from him, but he wasn't going to say no. He wasn't dating Danny, and she was free to dance with whomever she pleased.
He took one finally glance to Danny and then took a step away. Ross motioned with one arm. "Sure." Once he man's back was to him, a frown crossed his face, and he didn't care if Danny saw it. Was he already getting jealous because of one dance? He shook his head. He and Danny weren't together, so it didn't matter. He headed for the bar again. Maybe after a second drink or maybe a third, he would be able to talk to the bartender.

Danny had been about to politely decline the man who came up, though he was breathtakingly handsome. Still, she had promised Ross that she was his for the night, and that she wouldn't dance, flirt, or drink with any other guys tonight.
She even hesitated when he agreed and walked away, and her eyes trailed after him. It was too late now, but she'd apologize to him when she was with him again.
Her eyes came back to the man who had cut in. "I'm kind of with him tonight," she said over the music. "So one dance, okay?"

"Sure," Edmund replied agreeably. "Just one dance. For now." If he played his hand right, one dance would be all he needed to make her want a second one. And a third. And... Well, that would come later, he was sure. "I certainly don't want to get in the way. But you were so lovely, I simply had to talk to you. So... is he your boyfriend?" He nodded towards the rapidly retreating Ross.

For now. She didn't like how he had added that, but whether he sensed it, or was just that good, he started saying something very sweet and she nearly forgot about it.
Her eyes trailed back to Ross, and for a second, she thought of saying yes. It would cnvince this guy to back off after one dance.
When she considered this further, she turned back to her new dance partner and nodded. "Yes, he is."

But Edmund had caught the hesitation. As if she had to think about it. He could work with that.
"Yet you had to think about it," he remarked casually. "Is it a new relationship? Or... oh, let me guess. You're both really just friends, and you like him, but you're not sure how he really feels about you. Am I right?"

Danny frowned. She wanted to say that he made her uneasy, but... well, he didn't. It was hard to be uneasy when eyes like that were staring at you.
"No," she said slowly. "No, wrong on both accounts. We've been together forever, practically." Well, they had never dated, but they may as well have been a couple. She wasn't worried about this man saying anything to Ross, either, because she knew he'd play along.

"I see," Edmund said, still smiling. "In that case, he's a lucky man." He pulled her into a spin, catching her in his arms afterwards. "Well, you promised me one dance, and I mean to make the most of it. Allow me to introduce myself. I'm Edmund Fairfax. Would you do me the honor of telling me your name?" He was now standing very close to her, with one arm around her waist and the other on her shoulder.

Danny hated that he made her heart beat a little faster. His eyes were piercing and captivating. They could stare right through to your sould, she thought, and she found it a little difficult to keep eye contact with him.
"Uhm..." she fumbled, and she cursed herself because his words were smooth and so well put together. "Danielle," she forced herself to say clearly. "My name is Danielle Thomas. It's a pleasure."
Edmund Fairfax. That made him sound like he was straight out of the middle ages. He sounded like he was born into wealth, anyone. No one poor had a name like that.

"Danielle," Edmund repeated musically, rolling the l's gracefully on his tongue. "A lovely name for a lovely girl. It's a pleasure for me, too." He continued to look at her with his piercing blue gaze, a slight smile sitting on his lips. "Well, Danielle. I do hope your... boyfriend... knows what a gem he has in you."
As he spoke, he moved his face closer to hers, his warm breath caressing her face. He lowered his lids in a sleepy sort of gaze as his hand, the one on her shoulder, slowly slid up the curve of her neck to rest on the side of her cheek. They were barely dancing at all now, just slightly swaying to the music.

"Thank you, I'm sure he does," Danny said, though it came out in a whisper. They were so close now that she didn't really have to talk over the music.
She knew what he was doing. And Merlin, he was absolutely fantastic at it. He made her want to kiss him, and she was normally so much stronger than this around guys. But he knew what he had and used it. She licked her lips when she realized her breathing had even changed, and she smiled, trying to pull herself back a little, if only mentally.
"Quite the charmer, I see."

Edmund didn't move an inch. The corners of his lips twitched in a slight smile, but his eyes continued to stare into her with radiating intensity. "I'm a man who knows what he wants and how to go after it," he said softly. The implication of that statement hung in the air, like an unfinished thought.
With one finger, he lightly traced the line of her jaw, down to her lips. Then he moved in and brushed his own lips against hers in a very light, very gentle kiss. "I don't suppose your 'boyfriend' will care for this very much," he said against her mouth.

Danielle's breath caught in her throat, and she found it altogether impossible to move away from him.
The rational part of her brain told her to push him away and remind him that she was dating someone and that he was crossing the line. The part of her brain that he appealed to wanted her to admit that Ross was just a friend.
She was stronger than this! She was not some schoolgirl, desperate for attention.
She pulled back a fraction, just enough to break the very slight pressure from his lips, and she compromised the two halves of her mind. "He's not my boyfriend," she admitted, though the admission itself was evident in her eyes. "But I promised him I was with him for the night."

His eyes smiled in silent victory. "Really?" he said in a husky tone. "Then he's a fool. And an even bigger fool for not breaking us up sooner." His hand moved up to stroke her soft brown hair, while he moved her hips with his other hand, so that they were closer to his. They weren't even swaying at this point, just standing still on the dance floor, caught in the web he was slowly spinning.
"Do you think he'd be jealous if I kissed you again?" he breathed. Without waiting for an answer, he swooped in and kissed her again, a little more deeply this time.

Ross ended up ordering at least two more drinks as he watched Danny and the man that walked up. He started getting closer and closer to her, and Ross did not like that at all. Maybe it was his drinks getting to him, or maybe he was just plain out jealous. Ross didn't trust this guy. There was something about him that he didn't like, and it wasn't the fact that he asked Danny to dance.
He continued to watch them, and figured that Danny would just tell him to leave her alone. However, he started getting closer to her. He kissed her the first time, and Ross tightened his grip on his glass. Throwing back the contents of his glass, he still watched them.
Ross lost it when the guy kissed her. Danny didn't show any signs of pulling away. His grip tightened even more and the glass broke as he practically slammed it on the bar. He didn't pay any attention to the looks he got around him. Ross headed straight out to the dancefloor, and he knew that an angry look was on his face. He wasn't going to hide it.
Stopping right at them, Ross cleared his throat loudly.

She had no power to stop him. It was as if he breathed in and swallowed all of her sensibility and willpower when his lips pressed more firmly to hers, and she found her eyes closing, and her hands going to his neck and gripping the collar of his shirt.
The sound of someone clearing their throat brought her back to reality, but just barely. She broke the kiss... with a stranger, a voice in her head reminded her.
So yes, she pulled away, but her eyes remained closed for half a second longer. When she opened them, they met Edmund's first, and then flicked to Ross.
She didn't know what to say, or why Ross looked so angry. Well, yes she did. She had promised.
She sighed and let her eyes travel back to those intensely piercing ones. "I believe the song is over," she said to her stranger.

Edmund was slow to move. He'd heard the not-so-subtle throat clearing, and it amused him. So far the evening had been much more entertaining than he'd anticipated... why, it had been at least 5 minutes since he'd thought about Claire. Was there to be a fight next? A duel, perhaps?
Danielle was quite beautiful. And she looked nothing like Claire, which was a bonus in his eyes. He wouldn't mind spending an evening or two in her company. And the way she'd yielded to his gentle advances was enticing. He wanted to sample more. But if it was to end here, at least it had been most enjoyable.
"Yes, I suppose it has. You did promise me only one dance, so I suppose I should step aside. If that's what you desire, of course." He spoke this last part in a very low voice, his mouth still alarmingly close to hers. "I'm sure I speak for both of us when I say we won't force you into anything that's not what you want."
