Voltaire stepped off the platform and brought his hand high then down to say the duel was set. "Now!" he called and watched to see how the duel would play out.

Samantha struck first "Everte Statum!" trying at the very least to catch Maxi off guard, she silently cast a protection charm after it, and readied her wand for another rapid fire attack or defense should it have been needed.

Maxi set up a shield quickly, unaffected by Sam's spell. She quickly retaliated, "Incarcerous!" she yelled, aiming around Sam's shield.

Sam knew better than to cast a protective charm that didn't surround her, there was no going behind Sam's shield, but she was surprised that Maxi knew there was a shield to begin with, that didn't stop the other two attacks Sam fired one on top of the other, the first "Stupefy!" she called out straightening her arm, but sent a silent spell right afterwards changing her stance to something resembling a cobra she had to be completely focused and during duels, during any kind of magical fight or otherwise she had eyes for nothing but her opponent as she brought up her arm from the back, Petrificus Totalus!.

Maxi didn't have time to set up a shield to the attacks, so she dove off the stage, summersaulting onto her feet and pointing her wand again at Samantha, "Confundo," she said. "Protego Totalum." Maxi then put a shield around her whole body.

Sam's defenses were still holding, she had learned those first when she was younger and protecting herself against her mother, she learned to cast them silently, one right after the other Protego, Protego Totalum, Protego Horribilis between spells to never be defenseless, all it took was one attack, one drunken attack and years of horrific nightmares.
Sam hadn't moved from her spot, her eyes were still on Maxi she was perfectly calm perfectly focused. She simply had to get around Maxi's shield or bombard the thing with powerful attacks, but the attacks she had in mind weren't exactly jelly leg jinxes. Sure she could cause boils to appear on Maxi's flesh, Fire to surround the girl, she could cause razors to fly at her...but Merciful heavens she didn't want to kill the girl.
She wondered however if she could get through Maxi's shield by casting Finite and focusing on the shield itself. That was her first spell cast, once more silently. Sam was tricky changing from one style of fighting to another her verbal spell which was uttered with a fair ammount of force was also performed in another style all together allowing more power to flow from her wand and yet required a hell of a lot more concentration to aim the attack right, "Expelliarmus!"

Maxi felt the shield she put up dissapear. She realized Sam was using both verbal and silent spellcasting, but Maxi was ready. She moved around alot, not feeling the least bit foolish, it was harder to catch a moving target.
When Sam cast the disarming charm aloud, Maxi held tight to her wand with both hands so as not to lose hold of it. She decided to break down Sam's shields with a quick blast of several spells. "Finite!" She aimed at Sam.
"Impedimenta!" Maxi cast, "Langlock, Levicorpous, Obscuro!"

Sam bit back annoyance and admiration, Maxi did try and was pushing at Sam's defenses, but Sam was determined not to lose the higher ground and she did not move, not yet.
She used shields as a secondary defense, but she was better at deflection which was saying something. Instead of relying on her shields to bear the brunt of the curses sent her way Sam focused on deflecting while she planned her next attack in her head. Maxi was trying to take away her senses it was an interesting strategy but in this game it only took one hit. Sam wasn't going to go for the senses, she would rather simply get one on Maxi.
A small smile curved her lips, "Geminio!" the spell was cast on herself and then there were two of them, "Geminio!"then there were more. Multiple Sams all with their wand at the ready all mimicking Sam. Finally Sam moved, but where? Shouting a spell would easily give her away but Sam knew her silent spells, and that would be how she'd cast from now on.
Maxi had gotten through a few of her shields which she would need to either rebuild or forget about working on defense and move towards offense.
Locomotor Mortis! That ought to slow the girl down from moving, but just in case, Incarcerous!

"Excellent work!" and with that he fished out her scroll and tossed into the fire he had lighted before class. "You see, I told you all the first class that paper work is useless. What good did history do you in this instance? Not very much, I wanted you to focus on how duels have been fought, the use of seconds and the career of one old duelist won't give you that sort of insight." hopped off his desk and dropped the whole little basket into the flames. It flared brightly and then burnt itself out. "Dueling has been about honor, pride and revenge. As of the last part of the century it became a sport and as followed as Quidditch, not by so many wizards and witches, but as loyally. " Voltaire pushed aside his slate board and it showed his dueling platform from the year previous. "How about a little practice to make perfect? Do I have a few Volunteer?" he hopped on stage and removed his long black coat and tossed it on his desk and with a fancy twirl of his wand shot a few sparks off his sleeves as he brushed them off. Evelyn made a soft squeal of terror as her essay had been tossed into the flames. Her eyes were as wide as Galleons, her jaw nearly on the floor. How could he do that? She had spent a lot of energy on that essay and now it was engulfed by flames and turning quickly to ash as she stared in horror at what the professor had done. She sincerely felt the need to drop this class after that display.

Maxi blinked, pausing for only a second. Suddenly Sam was multiplying, all pointing a wand at Maxi. She looked at each one, silently putting up a shield around herself. She watched the clones, trying to see which was was the real witch. Soon enough, A spell deflected off of Maxi's shield and she saw the caster. "Impedimenta!" Maxi yelled before Sam could put up another defence.

Sam held up hit by the curse sent her way and she grunted after it. Sam then slowed down her movements running slugishly.
Previously while every Sam was running around the real Sam had been casting several finites one after the other silently, but sparks had been shooting out of all the wands from all the different Sams all hitting and bouncing off Maxi's shields.
"Wrong one." They all said in unison since there were more now. Several Sams had surrounded Maxi all now with their wands pointed at her, all then shouting different spells, "Incarcerous! Everte Statum! Langlock! Levicorpous! " along with another long string of curses from all of the different girls all with different color sparks shooting towards Maxi at the same time.

Maxi dropped to the ground, her shield still covering her as Sam's attack soared over her head in a mixed stream of colors and spells.
She jumpped up and pointed her wand. "Come on Sammy," Maxi teased. "That the best you can do?" Maxi asked, a look on her face that said. Give me your best shot

Sam had played this well, Maxi couldn't dodge all her spells especially when Maxi didn't know which was the real one, and when she was firing, Sam was getting rid of Maxi's shields for now because Maxi simply kept putting them up and the only spells Sam knew to go through a shield would really hurt Maxi and Sam couldn't do that not even to win this small battle, but she wasn't willing to go down either. It was a fools game to play considering she didn't want others to know she had any talent in this area, but Maxi was showing to have some stern stuff in her yet...well for being a hufflepuff, but Sam's aim wasn't horrible either in fact she wouldn't be performing the spells she was the way she was if she wasn't certain of her aim, but Sam would perhaps have to settle for less power and more accuracy if her target was going to be hopping around like an acrobat.
She had gotten one hit on Maxi, but perhaps because Maxi was able to hold on to her wand it hadn't counted, well there was more to throw at the girl.
Once Sam had wittled away the shield, while all the clones were still forcing attacks on the girl to dodge she was setting Maxi up to be directly available without a shield for another string of attacks all sent rapidfire. Every Sam sending them in all possible methods of Maxi to jump out of the way they were backing the girl into a corner, and as one of the clones went down another would appear.

*Besides the fact this is sounds far more than fifth years could do, Levi Corpus hasn't been invented yet.*
Voltaire was impressed, this was high caliber dueling. Most duelist he knew weren't so fit to spring out of the way. Most wizards didn't think so much about jumping out of the way of a hex or curse, they spent most of the witch trials of Europe enjoying the warm ticklish sensation of magically cooled fire.
"Class, take note of the illusions jinx, it's very complicated to preform, but when used correctly can devastate your opponents defense." he said coolly as he walked down the end of the platform. He'd have to ask Isa to cast an expansion charm on it if his students were going to jump and fling themselves in the air. "Can anyone else name any of the curses and jinxes that have been used thus far?" he asked the class as they were clearly spell bound by the action.

Seth had sat up as Maxi and Sam began dueling each other. When the Professor asked if anyone could name the spells, jinxes, and curses that Seth's friends were firing back and forth. "Um, Professor," Seth said, calling the teacher over. "You're not worried that they won't kill each other?" Seth knew that Sam was not Maxi's number one fan...

Maxi was getting sick of these clones. One Sam ticked her off enough as it is... She could hold her shield while performing other spells, she knew that. She just didn't know what spells to use. How do you attack an entire army of the same person?
She decided to try and go for some more verbal abuse. "What Sam? Going to hide behind you're little clones? Too afraid to play with me by yourself?" That was it, this was a game. It was all a game to MAxi. A game of wits, skill, and talent.
And she wasn't losing anytime soon.

It had been a game to Sam as well, this type of dueling anyhow, a skilled game at that trying to knock the girl down without doing something damaging. Where Maxi's rage ruled her Sam was cool and collected, she was down right bored, it was time to stop the charade, she had made Maxi look good enough in her oppinion and the taunts were cliche.
As it turned out Sam wasn't anywhere near Maxi though her hits had been getting at Maxi's shield, it was hard to believe that the girl could keep one up that long, with Sam knocking at them but Maxi was pretty good. Finally she made herself known for a final hit that should have knocked Maxi back she raised her wand to deliver full force and then... nothing.
Her tongue was stuck to the roof of her mouth her feet were stuck to the ground and she almost couldn't breathe but she simply looked stunned.

Maxi saw Sam move in for the final attack, she knew her shield was weakning and she simply braced herself for whatever Sam planned on throwing. But then, nothing.
She opened her eyes and saw Sam standing there, silent and imobalized. Maxi jumped up, triumph on her face. Then she realized that Sam looked as if she was having trouble breathing. "Finite," she said calmly, pointing her wand at Sam and lifting her jynxes. "Couldn't have you die before the first task now, could we?" Maxi asked, the triumph still evident in her voice.

Sam finally able to breathe again cast a sharp glare in Maxi's direction as she set her wand down and moved to sit down. That wasn't a nice curse in fact it hit very below the belt, Sam could have died and without being able to speak or move she couldn't tell anyone anything, that she was hurting or not, and then it started, a racking pain that coiled her gut, but Maxi wasn't spell casting was she? Unless she was doing this silently.
Sam hated to do it, she had a choice now to cause equal harm to the girl or to lay low...for now at least, she chose the latter "Stop..." she muttered through a clenched jaw still thinking the girl was hurting her, Sam wasn't going to cry, she wouldn't but it hurt, besides Maxi had laid her hit, and if it wasn't Maxi it was somebody else why didn't the professor stop this?

Maxi put her wand back in her pocket and began to return to her seat when she heard Sam mutter. "Stop what?" Maxi asked. "I ended my spell..."
