Rabastan had eyed the new Slytherin girl as she came in with the note, and was actually quite careful not to wave her over. There were several reasons for this, Andromeda, of course, being one of them, but principle being another. Still, she was worthy of the chase... he had decided that fairly early on.
As far as the professor's question went, he remained silent, thinking one of the two who had been in detention should answer first.

No one was answering and Evelyn really wanted to avoid a repeat of their last class. Hesitantly she raised her hand. She really hoped another student would catch the professor's eye before he called on her.

Samantha saw Rabastan and wondered at his friendly greeting the other day, but there didn't seem to be any recognition here, she sighed inwardly, well she was only a fifth year, but she was *Samantha Montgomery* that meant something. Well...no it didn't...not anymore, not here, here she was free to be just Sam...that was kind of nice too. She smiled instead of frowned at what might have been a slight.

Voltaire pointed to the red head, ah they were skittish, how cute. he thought sarcastically. "You there! Give a brief overview of what you have written and how hard you worked on it." he said with a smile. He had a nice pile of scrolls all of them looked like they were written down to the bottoms of the page. excellent...

Evelyn sighed softly then stood. "Well," her voice cracked. "I focused on the History of Dueling itself, not just the spells and charms used. A lot of my paper is centered around the first professional duelist..."
She gave a short but detailed summary of her work, which hadn't taken a long time to complete, but required a lot of intense studying when she finally got around to it. When she was finished speaking she sat back in her chair, ignoring any looks Rayne might be giving her.

Sam knew she wasn't the only one who wanted to get straight to the dueling itself, she wanted to see what they were learning and practice for defense. She was mildly excited at that and wondered if they would get to it soon. Her face showed no anxiousness however, she simply looked poised and graceful. Inwardly she was bouncing off walls.

"Excellent work!" and with that he fished out her scroll and tossed into the fire he had lighted before class. "You see, I told you all the first class that paper work is useless. What good did history do you in this instance? Not very much, I wanted you to focus on how duels have been fought, the use of seconds and the career of one old duelist won't give you that sort of insight." hopped off his desk and dropped the whole little basket into the flames. It flared brightly and then burnt itself out. "Dueling has been about honor, pride and revenge. As of the last part of the century it became a sport and as followed as Quidditch, not by so many wizards and witches, but as loyally. " Voltaire pushed aside his slate board and it showed his dueling platform from the year previous.
"How about a little practice to make perfect? Do I have a few Volunteer?" he hopped on stage and removed his long black coat and tossed it on his desk and with a fancy twirl of his wand shot a few sparks off his sleeves as he brushed them off.

Sam knew she was playing with fire, she really shouldn't have, but her hand went up after he asked the question. Dueling, it would be...grand and she wanted to test out her abilities here and now.
She needed all the practice she could get after all, and if it were to be one on one with the teacher or being used as a volunteer then that would indeed be practice.

Voltaire smiled at the young lady that raised her hand. "Very good! a point to Slytherin for being courageous." He knew it was a underhanded insult, but that made it all the more insulting. "You have a choice now, you can have a duel with me, no seconds, no contact to the first landed hit, Or you can have a duel with another classmate with seconds and to the first landed hit?"

Sam nodded her eyes scanning around the classroom before she turned to the professor following ettiquette she bowed though her eyes and senses were attuned to his position in the room, and then she removed her wand and held it out to him for inspection as was also customary ettiquette.
"Professor." she nodded.

Voltaire smiled and took up her wand. It wasn't a British made wand, but it was very well crafted. He offered her the wand in return, on his open palms and turned to class. "What Miss Montgomery just did is known as inspection. When there is a mediator, in this case me, they get shown both wands to see if there is a fake wand in place of a real wand or if any other sort of trick or trap has been laid." he turned back to Ms. Montgomery and asked "So you will be dueling another student? what year are you in?" he asked her, he wanted to be sure he didn't place a second year with her, she seemed to be at least a fifth or sixth year student.

"Fifth sir." she answered, against another student would be just as well, though she had hoped to duel against the professor instead, she supposed she wasn't clear on that and wasn't going to fight for it now. She ached to stretch her wings again although something about dueling and fighting in general with spells frightened her and got her blood pumping at the same time. Fifth year? That wasn't entirely accurate based upon the spells she knew or could use against her opponent, but they didn't have to know that, and she wasn't going to show all her cards when the ante was so small.

Voltaire nodded "If we have another fifth year who is willing to duel, You will duel them, If no one steps forward, You will duel me, do you agree to these terms?" he bowed to her acknowledging her as a potential opponent.

"Yes sir." she said and curtsied as was her customary french way of responding respectfully. She turned towards the class looking for all the world innocent as a peach, what could a little girl like Sam do? She'd be a pushover for sure...

Maxi raised her eyebrow, interested in the offer of a 5th year dueling Sam. "I'll duel her Professor," Maxi said with a chalenging smirk.

Sam stood welcoming, but properly meek there was no challenge in her eyes despite what she felt inside.
Alright Maxi...hit me with your best shot.

Voltaire nodded "Very well." He held out his hand for her wand, "Present your wand as Ms. Montgomery did, and take your place on the left side, You will bow to one another then walk to your places on each end of the platform. Remember this duel is only until the first landed Spell." he repeated the lay out of the duel again, he hoped the students would remember that.

Sam took her spot on the right side and was completely aware of her surroundings she paused waiting for Maxi's wand to be inspected and then for her to get to the left side. A battle plan formed in her mind, nothing too serious, she wondered whether to set up defenses first and prolong the attack or use a heavier more powerful spell on offensive to knock Maxi out of the running, on one hand if Maxi surprised Sam and could block the attack Sam would be somewhat in a predicament not having any defenses up, on the other Sam didn't need much time to set up her defenses either.
All this prestrategy was fine and everything but Sam never did anything according to structure, she moved and adjusted to her opponent.

Maxi presented her wand to Professor Voltaire, and after inspection, made her way to the left side of the room. Spells, jinxes, and curses ran through her head as fast as Maxi could process them. What to use against Sam?
She turned and faced Sam. Ready for whatever was thrown at her.

Sam did her customary curtsy only making it official with a bow before standing at the ready, her stance was traditional with her shoulders squared and one foot slightly in front as her wand was at the ready waiting for the go ahead from the professor.
