Andi heard the tone in his voice and glanced behind her to see him walking with his head down and his hands in his pockets. In that moment, she realized once again just how dangerous he really was. Any girl who saw him now would have a hard time believing he wasn't being genuine. Even she wasn't entirely sure that he wasn't anymore. He had always been an excellent liar, but if he was lying now, he was certainly pulling out all the stops. But why?
"I've changed a lot, too," she replied quietly.

He looked up, looking almost bashful. Not quite, but almost. "Yeah?" he asked. "I know. I can see it in you."
She was stronger now, happier, even, though it wouldn't last. Even if they allowed her to stay with the muggleborn, it wouldn't last. One of them would get hurt, or the lust would fizzle out, or any number of things could happen. Andromeda belonged with them.
It worked out though. The strong ones, the ones that don't bend, are the ones that break the cleanest. In a couple of weeks, she would be fine, maybe even back to the cold Black she should be.
He could hope.

Andi was blissfully unaware that forces were at work at that very moment to rip her away from the one that she loved. Had she even had an inkling of the plots at work against her, she might have been a little less casual and leisurely in her walk back to the castle. As it was, however, she didn't think running across the school grounds would help her get rid of her newly-appointed shadow Rabastan, so she took her time getting back to the castle.
"So you say you've changed," she said skeptically. "Just how much? Are you single, or are you seeing someone?"

He sighed. "I'm single. But don't judge me based on that. I'm actually single... no one night stands. No girls whose names I can't remember... it's not satifying anymore. And I'm not proud of how I used to be," he added, jogging a little to catch up to her to walk by her side.
"I think I need to be single for a while. Figure things out... I'm graduating this year and I have no idea what I want to do."

If he was telling the truth, then he really had changed. A lot. If he was lying, he certainly knew all the right words to say. But then, he always had. Still... she actually found herself hoping that he was telling the truth. Not for her sake, but for his. The way he had been... it was no way to live. Just living for pleasure and leaving a trail of broken hearts in his wake... it made for an empty life. And she still cared enough about him to want better for him than that.
"That's great," she said, still skeptical, but hopeful in spite of herself. "I'm happy for you."

Rabastan smiled. "You're not. You still don't believe me."
He shrugged, knowing that he was starting to break through. This meant a few weeks of celibacy, but he could handle it for her.
"It's okay. I'm not sure Rodolphus even believes it, half the time. It was you that opened up my eyes, you know. You're the first person I felt guilty for hurting... and it just got worse the more I did it."

"If you're telling the truth, then yes, I am happy for you," Andi replied. "But you're right, I still don't believe you."
One thing that could always be said of Andi was that she was always honest, sometimes even brutally so. But she had learned to hold back some of her thoughts. With Rabastan, she had to do that more than with anyone else. If she let him know that she really hoped he was telling the truth, he would twist it somehow into something other than what she'd intended.
As always, whenever Rodolphus's name was mentioned, Andi twisted her face in distaste. It was well known that she had no tolerance of Rodolphus Lestrange, and she couldn't imagine that time had made any difference on him. When Rabastan mentioned feeling guilty for hurting her, she almost laughed. She remembered all too clearly how he had acted back then and couldn't quite believe that he'd felt guilty about it.
"Right," she said doubtfully. "You seemed really broken up about it when you immediately started going out with Jennifer Harper, and then dumped her the next week for Rose Tyler."

He gave her something very close to a dirty look. "Look, Andi, I am trying to apologize. And if it was so long ago and you're so completely unaffected by it, why are you arguing with me?"
He sighed. "I'm sorry. I didn't mean to snap. I've never been perfect, Andromeda. I don't claim to be." He seemed to hesitate but kept up with her anyway. "I'll be quiet." He added, looking up at her like he thought that was what she wanted. Well, who was he kidding? It was probably exactly what she wanted. He'd indulge her for now.

Andi raised her eyebrows at his little outburst. It was typical of him to get defensive. But he didn't make excuses for his behavior, which was definitely new. She could almost feel herself starting to believe him. Bastard. He really could charm just about anyone, couldn't he? It was something she'd always hated about him. He always knew just what to say.
"OK," she said. "Fine. I don't believe you were all that sorry back then... but maybe you really are sorry now. I forgive you. I don't trust you still... that you have to earn."
They were almost at the castle by now, and she was desperately looking forward to the moment they could go their separate ways.

Alice hung back with Sirius frowning... "what is he up to? I don't trust him, Sirius." She had stopped pretending to look at the plant when they'd walked out the door but she knew Andi wouldn't appreciate her following. She was a grown woman and could take care of her self, or at least that's what she'd tell Alice she was sure. Alice sighed, she hoped Andi knew what she was doing because he was defiantly not behaving like the Rabastan she knew.

Bingo, he thought. Forgiveness was a step. And he still got to her... he could see little traces of it. Plus, she had not denied it.
"Of course I have to earn it," he said. "I'd have been surprised any other way. But Andi... I am going to earn it. I've changed... you'll see."
God, he was good. He sounded like such an honest, little boy. "Enough of all this, though. We could end up going in circles all day."

How far was he going to take this? He just kept going and going, as if he were attempting to campaign for sainthood. It was starting to irk her. Rabastan Lestrange was a lot easier to deal with when he was being his typical, cocky, smarmy self. But the nice guy act--she just didn't know how to take it. Instinctively, she knew not to trust him, but he certainly was laying it on thick.
It was a relief to her when they finally reached the castle. "Well, Rabastan," she said in a voice that was not entirely sincere, "it's been nice catching up with you. I suppose I'll be seeing you around."
Then she opened the doors.

"Yes," Rabastan said, jumping forward and opening the door for her. He had to figure out a way to stay with her for longer.
"Would you mind if I came to your Herbology class again?" He asked, holding the door until she passed through, and then coming in himself.
That was when he saw that up by the staircase, Rita had found her victim.
