Andi smiled. "Yes, actually, that is true, Gage," she replied thoughtfully. "Belladonna is used almost exclusively in medicinal potions, hellebore is used in the draught of peace, and wolfsbane is currently being experimented with in a potion that will, hopefully, reduce the effects and severity of werewolf transformations. Five points to Ravenclaw. However, that's actually not the answer I was looking for. Can anyone else tell me another thing these three mundane plants have in common?"

Sirius normally didn't care for Herbology, but he was enjoying his cousin's teaching. She was trying to keep people active, and also getting to know them a little at a time. And it was certainly better than collecting bubotuber pus.
The current question was a pretty easy one, as far as he was concerned. He'd heard his mother talking about it often back at home. How many times had Mum threatened to force-feed him the Draught of Peace with extra hellebore added?
He raised his hand and waited for Andi to call on him.

Severus sighed and raised his hand again. "Aconite, Nightshade, and black, green, white and false hellebore are all poisonous on their own, if fact without the magical preparation, they'd kill most anything that would consume them." it might of been arrogant, but he was used to calling the plants by the other known names...Belladonna sounded too much like a girls name.

Andi had been about to call on Sirius when another voice interrupted. She turned to see Severus Snape talking. She didn't want to be harsh on the boy, but it somewhat defeated the purpose of raising one's hand if one did not wait to be called upon before answering. But of course, his answer was perfectly correct. "Yes, very good, Severus. Five points to Slytherin. Although, please try in the future to wait until you're called on before answering."
She winced slightly, hoping she didn't sound mean. "But that is very good. Thank you, also for pointing out the proper names of wolfsbane, which is also known as aconite, and belladonna, more properly known as nightshade."
Looking out at the rest of the class, she continued. "Many plants that we use in magic have to be treated in just the right way to avoid causing harm. And as Severus has explained, some of them are poisonous if not prepared correctly and used in the specific amounts. Now, if you'll all look to the far left side of the greenhouse, you'll see a line of 15 different plants. I want you all to walk over there, starting with the closest row, and look at each plant. They are all labeled, and they are all mundane plants with magical uses. Please, go ahead and and look over at them, and write down their names."
[Plants, in order:
1. aconite (wolfsbane) 2. asphodel 3. belladonna (nightshade) 4. dittany 5. fluxweed 6. ginger root 7. hellebore 8. holly 9. knotgrass 10. lovage 11. mallowsweet 12. nettle 13. sage 14. sneezewood 15. wormwood ]

Sirius glared at Severus for blurting out the answer like that. He was going to have to talk to James later about ways to get back at Snivellus for snatching those 5 points away from Gryffindor. Or maybe, when Severus got up to check out the plants, a little well-placed trip jinx would be good enough...

Severus smiled in an unpleasant way. "Very sorry professor." he said it quietly, maybe sounding a bit meek. He really wasn't one for much talk, but he couldn't let Black answer the question either, that useless waste of air had probably been threatened with it by his own mother to know what the plants would do. He stood up after she directed them to the plants, Ginger was growing in a lush green leaves like spear heads, with small bright red flowers like narrow trumpets. The Holly was bright too, but the shiny leaves wear unpleasant because of their sharp points.

Sirius waited for his turn to stand up and walk over to the display of plants on the other side of the room. He tried to aim a trip jinx at the Slytherin boy, but there were too many other people in the way, so he had to wait. He sighed in frustration. So typical of Snivellus. He'd definitely have to get him back later.

Alice didn't notice anything amis going on, she was lost in her own thoughts and went to look at the plants she'd seen many times before. She could list them by name without difficulty but she still enjoyed the little plants. She felt so at ease in the greenhouse and she walked behind her younger cousin Sirius to the table. She realized he was staring and frowning at another student.. no he was concentrating she thought. She nudged him from behind and whispered into his ear, "boo". She'd ment it more to distract him, and just to let him know she was there since he hadn't even looked in her direction when she'd come in. He seemed to have been concentrating on the slytherin boy too hard since she'd come in and she wasn't about to have him doing something to loose them house points if she could help it.

Evelyn was still utterly embarrassed about her slip up but luckily no one, not even the Slytherins, were cruel enough to exploit her. She waited until there was a large enough group standing at the plants that she would not be noticed, then she took her parchment and quill to take notes about the plants including names and a brief description. She continued to look around the room, letting her gaze fall ever so briefly on Rabastan before hastily turning back to the plants. She was quick enough and was back in her seat faster than anyone else.

Sirius heard someone whisper in his ear and turned around quickly, wondering which girl he'd been accidentally flirting with this time. He was relieved to see his cousin Alice standing behind him instead. "Hey, Alice," he said in a whisper. "It's like a regular family reunion, huh? All the good family members.... and Regulus." He shot a disdainful look in his brother's direction. "I haven't seen you much lately... what have you been up to?"

As Evelyn's gaze fell on Rabastan, he had made the decision to get up.
Yes, he had promised that he wouldn't distract her, or more correctly, the other students, but they were all doing busy work anyway. What harm could it do?
He stood, moving past the students to where Andromeda was.
"If you were nervous at all," he said, his voice soft and gentle, and deceitfully genuine, "You've done a wonderful job of hiding it."

Alice whispered back to her cousin noting the relieved look in his eyes... "I've been busy studying for my NEWTs this year, just wait till you're a seventh year and you'll be cooped up with a bunch of musty smelling books too. I've seen you in the common room but you're always busy with those three boys you hang around to notice me." She chuckled softly teasing him, maybe he'd say hello more often if she made a point to tease him about it, which had always worked before.

Andi leaned against her desk, watching the children as they filed up to look at the plants. She was feeling a flush of satisfaction for a job well done; as nervous as she had been, it had become surprisingly easier as she went along.
She was so wrapped up in her thoughts that she didn't even notice when Rabastan walked up to her. It wasn't until she heard his voice next to her ear that she realized he was there. She jumped slightly, and if she hadn't been leaning against the desk, she might have lost her balance.
Don't let him see that he can still get to you, she told herself. Hardening her expression, she turned to him with narrowed eyes. "What do you want, Rabastan? I know you haven't developed a sudden interest in Herbology."

Rabastan sighed, letting her see him frown.
"I already told you that I just want to make ammends. I know what I did to was inexcusable, and I wish you knew how much I regret it. But you're back.. and I see that as my chance to make things right."
Well, that was true, just not in the way he was selling it to her. "And I wanted to tell you that you're doing wonderfully today."

"You always regret it when you get caught," Andi said coldly. "If that was all it was, you could have just sent me a candygram or something. But I don't need you to make things right. You're three years too late. I'm a big girl, I can take care of myself. I've moved on."
But as she looked at him, standing a little too close to her, she could still feel a trace of the old magic that had once drawn her to him. It was sort of like the moth to a flame... you know you're going to get burned, but you're still drawn to it. Luckily, she knew what real love was like. This was just a physical thing. That was it.
"Thank you for the compliment, Mr. Lestrange," she said in a formal "teachery" voice. "Now please return to your seat."

He ignored her request for him to go sit down.
"I know you've moved on. And I suppose I'm supposed to be appalled that you chose a mudblood... sorry, habit. I mean muggleborn. But I'm not. I'm actually really happy for you," he said. His words were slightly rushed, as if he feared that she would stop listening. But who was he kidding? He had her attention.
"I'm doing this for me. I need the absolution, love. I need to know that the woman Tonks is getting isn't still broken."

Andi was getting annoyed. Why did he have to do this here, in front of her students? On her first day? If she was honest with herself, at least half of the nerves she felt while she had been teaching had been caused by him. If his intentions really were to make things better--which she highly doubted--he was failing. His presence had a disquieting effect, like a warm squiggling around in her stomach.
"Either you underestimate my strength, or you overestimate the hold you had on me," Andi replied evenly. "You didn't break me. Not permanently, anyway. I put myself back together, with no help from you. Now, honestly, don't you have some groupies somewhere you should be allowing to fawn all over you?" She glanced over at Evelyn for a brief second, then back at him. She didn't say anything else, but the meaning was clear.

"Okay, that didn't come out right," Rabastan said quickly. "Merlin knows you're one of the strongest women I've ever met. I just meant that I know I hurt you, and I wanted to make it right. For me. I know you've moved on. But I haven't."
His eyes were honest, a talent he prided himself on. "Do you think there's a chance we could be friends again? Or have you given up on me completely?"

Friends with Rabastan Lestrange. It was almost laughable. But she wasn't laughing. If she said yes, it would mean giving him an excuse to hang around her even more. If she said no... it would just prove he still had an effect on her. And she would not let him see that, even if it was true in some way.
"Maybe," she said at last. "The thing is, Rabastan, I don't trust you. And I'm not sure I can be friends with someone I don't trust."

"And I've given you no reason to trust me," he said with a nod. "I know that. All I'm asking for is achance to earn that trust back. You're a hell of a woman, Andi, and I'm a fool of man for not noticing it earlier."
She was smart not to trust him, and he was determined to break her of that as well. He was confident enough in himself that he could do it rather quickly, and nodded again. "Just a chance. We all deserve a second chance, don't we?"
