Emmeline walked slowly to a secluded section on the lake. People were milling around. Some were studying and others were just hanging out. They all had their own groups. Emmeline didn't get invited to do anything in the afternoon. Not that she didn't have friends, they just didn't think to include her. It wasn't their fault. She sighed. She just needed someone that understood what it meant to fit in, but still be different.
She found a quiet spot. It look like it had hardly ever been occupied. She sat near the water, just close enough to feel the cool breeze. She wasn't sad. Just lonely. She sighed and doodled random stuff in the air with her wand.

Walking out of the school, James sighed. He needed to get away from Lily for a little bit. She was in the common room and he still felt that he couldn't face her after the spill in Potions. It was still haunting him. Why was he nervous? James needed to get over it. James Potter never got nervous, except around Lily Evans. She made him feel differently and made him question himself. It was somewhat scary.
James realized that his feet led him to the lake. Noticing that someone else was there, he figured that he should be nice about it. "Mind if I join you," he asked.

Emmeline jumped a couple of feet in the air at the sound of someone else's voice. She whipped her head around, some of her blond hair flying into her face, and looked at who had approached. It was none other than James Potter. Emmeline sighed a little and tried to push away her adrenaline rush. She shook her head slowly and motioned for him to sit beside her.
There was something different about him. She noticed that he was a little sullen looking, almost depressed. No fire, no fun. She had a sneaking suspicion that it had to do with the argument James and Lily had in potions today. Emmeline felt sympathy for him and even empathy, but she still couldn't understand why he was going after her when Emmeline heard that Lily and Remus were dating. But she would ask later.
"Are you okay?"

"Sorry, didn't mean to scare you," James apologized hiding a laugh. He walked over to her with his hands in his pockets and sat down on the grass. Looking out to the lake a cool breeze hit and James turned to the girl. He realized that it was the girl from potions that he didn't speak to. Emme if he remembered correctly.
"Yeah, I'm okay," he replied. "Why wouldn't I be? Are you okay?" James gave her a smile. "James Potter," he said sticking his hand out. "I didn't introduce myself to you yet, so I'd thought I'd be nice."

Emmeline raised an eyebrow at his brunt reassurance, but let it slide. She would get it out of him eventually. "I'm fine. Why? Do I look ready to drown myself?" she asked, motioning toward the lake.
"I know who you are." she stated, shaking his hand in return. "I'm Emmeline or Emme in case you don't remember. And thanks for being nice." She said, adding the last part along with a bitter thought of It's about time. She sighed out loud. "What are you doing out here anyway? Shouldn't you be pranking somebody with Remus, Sirius, and Peter?" This is horrible. It must sound like I stalk them. I mean, how sad is it to know who they all are, but they have no idea you even exist?

"I thought that was your name, I just didn't want to say it and it be wrong," James said with a laugh. His laugh faded when she thought he would be pranking with the boys. "Ouch Emme, that hurt," he said putting a hand over his heart. "I'm not really that bad of a guy. I mean, aside from the pranking. No one really knows that I guess." James gave a shrug. "I guess I came out here to get some fresh air and get away. Plus, I'm going to be nice, so that means no more pranking for awhile for me." He ran a hand through his messy hair. "What about you Emme?"

She rolled her eyes and smiled slightly. But she saw his smile fade and she suddenly felt very tense. A fading smile was never a good sign. But that was soon forgotten when he faked hurt. She had to laugh slightly. She looked at him quizzically though when he said that know one really knows that.
"Mind if I ask what you want to get away from? And why are you going to not prank for awhile? And why would something be wrong with me?" She took a breath. "I'm sorry. I don't mean to be so brutal."

"I'm just getting away from the school for a bit is all," said James. "I just need time away from it every once in awhile, you know? I'm not pranking for a while because, well, I'm sure you saw what happened in potions." James sighed again. Why did he get himself into stuff like that?
"Nothing is wrong with you," he said. "Honestly. I don't see a thing wrong with you, so don't worry about that. Plus, it's okay. Being brutal is alright sometimes." James offered a smile.

Emmeline nodded in agreement completely understood what it was like just wanting to get away. She cocked her head to side and smiled slightly when he mentioned potions class. She remembered how cute it was to see them argue.
She blushed a little when he said nothing was wrong with her. She decided she better not over analyze anything. "Thanks. But apparently we don't know each other very well. Obviously. Yes, brutality is nice. But not for me. I hate hurting people. It kills me to see people hurt." She blushed again. Well, it's better he know she is over sensitive now than never.

James smiled again as he noticing her blush. She was right cute when she blushed he noticed. He nodded in agreement. "Obviously. Although, you seem like a nice girl. I mean, you didn't start hexing anyone as soon as you saw them."
He wondered if she was saw his pranks as horrible too. James didn't see anything wrong with them of course because no one ever got hurt badly. He pushed the thought off. "Well, it's better to be brutal every once in awhile, you wouldn't want people pushing you around, would you?"

Emmeline couldn't but smile when he did. It was kinda infectious. She shrugged when he mentioned her being nice. "Believe me, I would love to throw hexes at people that piss me off." She wanted to ask him questions about his friends and what he likes to do besides prank. But she didn't want to be nosy, so she pursed her lips and watched him talk.
"Of course I don't want that. Who does?" She paused. "Do you and Lily always argue like that in the middle of class?"

"Well, why don't you? I mean, you don't have to be standing right in front of them when you do it. You could be standing off, and I don't really think that they would expect you," said James. "'Course, people always suspect me and Sirius for everything, Remus not so much." He gave a shrug.
A slight pink tint rose to James' cheeks as she mentioned the scene in potions. "It's not usual in the middle of class. Usually in the common room it happens. Sometimes she'll glare at me if we're both outside and I'll make some kind of remark to her." James ran a hand over his face. "I haven't got a chance, but I keep trying anyway. How hopeless is that?"

Emmeline's eyes got slightly big when he started to tell her about hexing people. Not that she was shocked, he was just so serious. "So, you and Sirius are closer?" She asked, smiling slightly when she thought of Sirius.
"It isn't hopeless at all." She whispered quietly. Why she whispered, she didn't know. But it seemed like a sensitive moment. "Do you wanna tell me about it? Maybe I can give you some advice."

"We're all about the same closeness," said James. "I think it's just that we look like we're up to something always." He gave her a wicked grin.
He looked at her as she offered him a chance at advice. Was she serious? Robin had given him advice, even Sirius! They both said the same thing in the end. Be himself. That was about it. "I guess I can put it this way. I do everything I can to impress her, open doors, all that stuff. I'm even stopping with my pranks for a little bit, but I know that she's going to find some way to say no if I ask her to go somewhere with me." He shook his head. "No matter what I do. It's never good enough. I might as well stop trying so hard. She doesn't like me."

Emmeline laughed a little when he gave her a devilish grin. He was very nice and his pranks were very funny. And no one even got hurt. And the people that get prank usually think of it as a privilege.
"So, you try to be a gentleman? And you try to be yourself, but it doesn't work? Tell me what Lily is like. Maybe that will make it easier to understand what is going wrong." Emmeline smiled encouragingly and waited patiently for him to respond.

James nodded. "There's nothing wrong with Lily," he said. He thought she was perfect. There was something wrong with him he guessed. James sighed. "Lily is smart and kind." He ran his hand down his face. "Ugh this is embarrassing. I don't know how to describe her, other than, she's just Lily. She knows how to get to me, I swear she does. She just does it sometimes for fun I think."

Emmeline laughed quietly. "Yes, well most girls do know how to get to boys. So, what do you like about her? Other than the fact that she is smart and kind." Emmeline raised an eyebrow at him, almost as if to say "Like you aren't".
She looked over across the lake while he pondered and blushed. She saw couples and groups of friends, laughing and talking, wondering why her and James weren't laughing and talking. Instead, they were talking about who he liked and how he thinks he isn't good enough. Emmeline sighed. Not that she minded talking serious, those were the best kind of talks. But maybe she was to serious. She brushed it off and looked back James.

James looked over to Emme. "Everything," he said. He shook his head. "You know what? Not being rude or anything, but I came outside to get away from her, so let's just change the subject shall we? Let's see. What is there we could talk about?" He sat and thought for a moment.
"Do you like pranks? I mean, any kind. Big or small."

She shrugged and nodded her head when he abruptly changed the subject. She wanted to help him, but she wasn't going to make him uncomfortable. She watched him think and she couldn't help but notice, even without a breeze, his hair stuck out in certain places. Maybe it was his trademark.
"Yes. I like pranks. I think they are hilarious." Emmeline answered his question with a genuine smile. "I'm just to much of a chicken to join in or do any kind of prank for that matter. I have what you call "The Vance Luck". That means nothing ever goes your way and whatever can happen, will happen." She smiled. It was kinda fun talking to someone that wasn't afraid to be a dare devil.

A smile crept its way across his face. "I'm glad to see others enjoy pranks. I personally like to pull pranks and of course pull them. Sirius is the one that really has the great mind. I just help pull it all together. We even make our own potions sometimes. I remember once, we made one on accident. I decided that I was going to be the one to test it. Once I drank it, we realized that it grew hair all over my body. Needless to say, Madam Pomfrey was grossed out." James laughed. "We haven't tried it out on anyone else yet, although I think I should sometime."
