Isabella walked into the hospital wing the morning after talking to Alastor in the cemetary. She'd spent the morning throwing up again, and she was getting a little annoyed with it. She needed to confirm whether his theory was true.
She walked past the other patients and into the back room, where Madam Pomfrey sometimes saw patients who needed privacy. Madam Pomfrey was back there, fixing a potion for someone.
"Oh, hello, Ms. Rothschild, can I help you?" she asked.
Isabella avoided the woman's eyes. "Um, I've been, um... I've been having some problems with nausea and sickness.... I was wondering if you could just check me over and see if I'm OK?"
Madam Pomfrey nodded. "Of course, just lie down over there." She pointed to a bed.
Isabella walked over and lay down, and Madam Pomfrey added one last ingredient to her potion before walking over to her. She ran her wand over Isabella, murmuring an incantation as she did. After a moment she stopped. "Ms. Rothschild, is your nausea primarily in the morning?"
Isabella gulped. "Yes," she whispered.
Madam Pomfrey nodded and smiled slightly, but she performed another check, centering around Isa's stomach. Finally she looked up, smiling. "Well, I have good news for you. You're pregnant."
Isabella let out a shaky gasp and squeezed her eyes shut tightly. She couldn't believe this was happening...
"I'm sorry, is that not good news?" Madam Pomfrey asked worriedly.
Isabella sighed. "No, it's just... it's unexpected, that's all." She took a breath, then looked up at the woman. "Um, can you just check... I mean, is it OK? I kind of drank a large quantity of alcohol a few days ago..."
Madam Pomfrey nodded and performed another check. "It looks OK to me, dear, but it's a little early to tell," she said. "I suggest we monitor it carefully... and please, don't drink again..."
"I won't," Isabella said. She sat up, then got to her feet. "Thank you. I guess I have some things to think about..."
Her head was swimming with the news... she wanted to tell Voltaire, but now just didn't seem to be the time. Slowly she walked out of the back room and past the patients in the main room.
