"No you don't!" she shouted, sending red sparks in his direction though her aim was off and they hit the wall to his right, leaving scorch marks on the wallpaper. "It's his house, his estate! Not yours!"

"I own it Lyra." He said confidently, "He's gone. I don't know if he's ever coming back. He left you. He left us all."
Nik raised his chin, unflinching as sparks flew past him.

"Why?" she asked him as her voice quivered. Her arms slowly lowered until finally it dropped to her side and she stared at him with big doe eyes. "When?" This wasn't something that had always been. He would have told her if that was the case. Right?

He sighed, she was hurt now. Lost. Betraying every thought she ever had of being indifferent and carefree. He didn't like that either. He continued softly, "The deed came after he left."
Julian wanted Nik to take care of the propery, more however, he wanted Nik to take care of Lyra.

She already knew he wasn't coming back, so why did it matter now that the property was no longer his? It wouldn't change anything for her. She didn't care if Nicolas had extra responsibilities now because of it. So what if the house wasn't his anymore? She didn't love him because he didn't love her. So it didn't matter that Nicolas held the deed. It shouldn't have mattered because she didn't care.
Except it mattered and she didn't know why.

She knew exactly why it mattered, for all her blustering she did care. She cared too much. So did Nik, and he was just as lost as she was.
The estate had come with a letter asking Nik to settle his affairs. The estate was compensation almost to take care of whatever Lyra might need, as if Nik wouldn't look after the girl on his own, as if Sam wouldn't.
He wondered whether or not to tell her that it was for her interest, would that give her false hope? Would it hurt her further? He didn't know, but he didn't want to lie to her either.
"I don't know if he's coming back Lyra. But he cared for you. He gave me the deed to the estate in trust, for you."

Lyra's features turned quizzical. In trust for her? She didn't know what that meant. Whenever anyone started talking business, Lyra zoned out. Even if Nicolas or Mason or anyone had spoken of trusts during one of the many conversations at a social function she had attended with them, she wouldn't have been listening enough to understand.
"He doesn't trust me?" she asked, not sure if she heard Nicolas correctly. "You got the estate because he doesn't trust me?" She was more perplexed than upset at the idea that he wouldn't trust her. That would inevitably come later when her brain was no longer busy trying to sort things out.

Leave it to Lyra to confuse the issue, "What? No." he said confused as to how she read his statement, "The funds of the property, it's essentially for you. For whatever you need." Yes Nik was in charge of the business aspect, because Lyra had no interest or experience in running the estate, but Julian's meaning was clear. He didn't want Lyra to want for anything, the stupid man didn't understand that the only thing she wanted was him.
"He wanted to make sure you were taken care of no matter what."

"Oh," she said softly, still confused but now for completely different reasons. Lyra was quiet as she tried to make sense of things but she was having no luck. She didn't want to think about it any longer as she was getting a headache and it was either the confusing situation or the hangover potion wearing off. Either way, Lyra was done. Her expression flattened.
She looked around a bit and took stock of the few belongings she had with her. She had found her wand and that was the only thing she had been missing earlier before Nicolas surprised her by staying. She gave a small whirl of her wand and the pillows she had thrown at Nicolas earlier floated back onto the sofa. She aimed it next to the scorch mark on the wall but hesitated and decided to leave it there. "Derek can pay for that," she said, slightly bitter. "For turning me down and then telling you about." She looked at Nicolas, confusion again covering her pretty face. "Did you two know each other?"

He didn't know how to respond to her, he didn't like the confusion or the lost expression on her face, though he nearly chuckled when she said that Derek could pay for the scotch stain. When she asked if he knew the man Nik shrugged.
"In passing. I'm more familiar with his brother." the one who handled the family business. Of course they were all familiar with one another in some way. They were of the same elite society.

Lyra didn't know much about Derek, just that he was Vanessa's friend and had enough money to afford the Avalon as suitable option for Vanessa when she couldn't stay at his flat. Lyra didn't even know the reason behind Vanessa's eviction, only that whatever had happened had nothing to do with Vanessa herself.
"Well you obviously know each other well enough to talk about me," she commented. It was bad enough that she had been rejected by the man, he didn't need to go and tell Nicolas about it, too. "I forgot, you know all the rich people."

"What else would we talk about?" he asked furrowing his brow in confusion. Nik had come very close to getting into a fight with the older man before Derek assured Nik that nothing 'untoward' happened. Derek had also muttered something about 'damned overprotective boyfriends' but Nik hadn't paid any attention.
He didn't have a defense for knowing all the rich people. He did know all the rich people.

"Never mind," she said bitterly and waved him off with her hand. She didn't want to think of all of the rejections she had been through recently. It hurt her ego and that man had already hurt her pride. Lyra raised the skirt of her dress and stuck her wand in the garter on her thigh, then pulled the fabric back down and smoothed it as best she could.
"I suppose you came here to bring me home," she said as she looked at the floor and folded her arms across her chest. She kicked at nothing with the toe of her shoe.

Nik looked at her speculatively, "Depends." he said crossing his arms over his chest and mirroring her body language.
"You look like you wouldn't last a round with a fruit fly, maybe you should go home and rest." he said then paused.
"Or...if you're not too tired I may have an idea."

Nicolas liked to go big or go home when it came to cheering up Lyra and she wasn't sure that she was up to anything like a trip to Milan again. She looked up at him, though the rest of her stance did not change. "What is it?"

Nik would not be pointing out the fact that he was the only one usually around to cheer her up. Though he might have thought it.
"A surprise." he said with a smirk, "But I'm not sure you're really up for it..." he looked at his watch, "Why don't you go home, take a nap, go to Enchanted around three or four get the works done, and meet me at home by seven?"

She looked at him for a moment, weighing her options. A part of her wanted to go to What's His Face's mansion and yell at Costa for not explaining about the deed, even though she still didn't fully understand what it had to do with her. But another part of her wanted to go out and find some other guy to shag to prove that she was over What's His Face or, more importantly, that she had never foolishly fallen for him in the first place. But Nicolas' idea of a nap and 'the works' at the Enchanted VIP spa was also enticing.
"It's really annoying how pleasant you are sometimes," she commented with true annoyance in her voice. She wanted to be mad at him for tracking her down and scaring off Derek. She wanted to be angry with him for keeping the deed to the estate a secret from her. Mostly she just wanted to stop feeling any emotions at all and it didn't matter where she turned, she wasn't able to escape them. "Seven?"

Nik laughed. He couldn't help it. Few and far women in between ever found his charm annoying, although Sam had said the same thing of him a few times. He could be difficult to be angry with, but he could do quite a few things to make a person angry.
"Seven." he confirmed.

"Fine," she said, giving in. She moved away from the wall she had backed herself into and walked to the exterior door. "Try not to mention this to anymore of your rich friends," she grumped at him as they left the hotel.
She didn't feel much up to drinking, but she needed something to alter this state she was in at the moment. Maybe she would see if Samantha had a Euphoria Potion hidden in her room somewhere. That would make for a relaxing day at home before she got ready for whatever crazy thing Nicolas had planned for her.
