"Oh yes, I forgot all those paparazzi that go looking for rich executives at dive bars to expose in the tabloids." She snapped at him because he had made a good point but she didn't want to acknowledge her mistake. So she carried on as if she had the upper hand in the argument, knowing that she didn't.
"Right, next time I want to get f*cked by five men I'll bring them here. Or would you prefer I take them to the castle so you can watch over me?"

"I'd prefer you to stop acting like a spoiled brat looking for attention by spreading her legs." he returned pinching the bridge of his nose.
"But since I can see that you're incapable of rational thinking and are in such a hurry to spread yourself out before London, I won't stand in your way. Please go out and f*ck whoever you want. You are obviously the queen of sensible thinking."

She folded her arms across her chest as she glared at him. She wasn't looking for attention, she didn't think so anyway, and even if she was it was no business of his.
"I love the double standard here, Nicolas. I want to go shag someone and you call me an attention seeking whore. It couldn't be that perhaps this is just who I am, a woman who likes sex. I know that's so scary for you big ole' tough men to handle. You want me to be a quiet, sweet little woman who would never think of sleeping with a man she didn't love. But it's okay if you do, isn't it? You can go out and find a girl and take her for a spin, even though you don't love her. And you know you don't love her because you love Samantha. But news flash, she doesn't love you! And since you can't control that pathetic excuse for a relationship you try to control me!"

But it was his business. In a way. He cared about her. Rather remarkably she had become his best friend in the past few months with all the time they spent together. He had been there for her through all of her ups and downs. And yes they had an adversarial relationship, but at the end of the day he fought for her happiness. She was pissing it all away because of a stupid man. She deserved better.
"No double standard here sweetheart." he said narrowing his eyes, "You're an adult, you can do as you please. But you're not looking to shag some guy because you like sex. You're putting yourself in dangerous situations, getting completely hammered at a bar, and inviting five men to defile you, because you're insecure and want someone to want you." he sneered. He got to his feet then and poured himself a drink. "You got a big slap on the wrist for cutting when you almost killed yourself."
He turned toward her to walk in her direction as he threw in his own verbal attacks to hide the hurt her words had caused, "so you know that's not an outlet, but maybe, just maybe you'll find someone desperate enough to f*ck the pain away. So for the last time I don't care who you f*ck, I already turned you down, so did Derek, and other than the piss poor drunken idiots at the bar last night I don't exactly see men lining up around the corner. And while Sam might not love me, at least she didn't leave the country to get away from me."

She stood there, glaring at him with her arms crossed, listening to him return every ounce of hate and bile she had sent at him first. Initially, she was simply angry. His words enraged her but they were fighting, it was expected. She had taken a low blow to attack his relationship with Samantha so she was expecting something equal in return. She fought with Nicolas enough to expect that he would keep the fight level, no matter how low she sunk.
But she didn't expect it to hurt so much. Her breathing became more shallow as his words struck her. She bit her lip to keep it from shaking. As he spewed the last vile line from his mouth there were tears in her eyes and she swung her arm at him, slapping him hard across the face.

He deserved the slap. He deserved worse than the slap. But she had baited him and he of course fell for it. It didn't matter that he didn't mean any of it. He wanted to apologize, but the words stuck in his throat, there was no apology. He didn't know why Lyra's spreading herself around bothered him so much, he didn't dare to examine how it made him feel truthfully, but he knew that it hurt, and he didn't want her to get hurt.
Seeing her in pain sent a physical ache through him. He hated that he was the cause of it, and the slap sobered him as much as it frustrated him. He took her by the arms bringing her close against his chest, he wanted to shake her, but instead he simply stared at her, half angry, half something else he couldn't define.

This was far from the first time he'd insinuated she was a whore. He had claimed to Mason that she controlled him from between her legs. He earned himself a sturdy punch in the face for that remark. He had also called her a cheap harlot to her face the day M tried to take her. Since then he had been kinder to her. Even when they argued it was usually to get her to make better decisions. She had since forgiven him for his earlier remarks, but the pain was renewed as he returned to the hateful speech that had started off their relationship.
It had only ever happened once before. She slapped Nicolas after she had overheard him and Samantha talking about her, about how he thought she was using Mason as he believed she had used his other friend. An opportunist, he had called her. A gold digger is what he meant. She slapped him and was quite certain he would hit her back though he did not.
It was no different now. As he grabbed her she flinched, expecting to be struck at any minute. There was a loud ringing in her ears and she could feel her heart racing. It was happening again. Maybe it would take her this time.

Nik would never dare strike a woman, though if there was a woman who could provoke him to do such a thing it would be Lyra. Still his principles were strictly in place when it came to physical abuse, spankings aside.
Finally he pulled her close and hugged her, "I was worried about you, you stupid little fool. I didn't know if you had been kidnapped or harmed. I might have looked all over this bloody continent!" he sighed reeling in his anger.
"You drive me mad woman."

Lyra didn't know what to do. She was furious at him for his cruel words. He had reignited her fear and now he was hugging her. She could hear her pulse pounding in her ears. It was too much.
Lyra pushed out of his arms, using one of the maneuvers Nicolas had taught her in order to escape an attacker. She quickly stepped away from him, her ankles wobbling slightly as her five inch heels inhibited her movements slightly. "Don't play like you care about me now! You don't get to say those things to me and then f*cking hug me!"

She was right of course, and Nik was a jumble of emotions, the one that had overtaken him just a few moments ago was relief, but he had been so worried about her that the anger had taken over.
Why couldn't they ever just talk to one another? Why did it have to come down to nasty words and cruel attacks?
He sighed, then put his hands on his side to prevent himself from touching her again, "It's what I wanted to do when I found you, then you baited me. And I stupidly rose or sunk rather to the challenge. I wanted to apologize for yesterday this morning, but I was told you had left. I traced you to the bar where I was told a wonderful story of you giving lap dances to five different men before another man took you to a hotel. Keeping up with you is a full f*cking job. And before you say that you don't need a babysitter, tough sh*t, because I do care about you Lyra, and what you're doing is no better than cutting, you're going to get hurt."

She hadn't stopped cutting, though she wasn't doing it as often as before. She was more careful about it now because she knew they were watching her but she still got high off the comfort that followed the pain. She was drinking more now, to level things out for the less frequent self harm sessions on the bathroom floor. She would have added shagging strangers to the list of bad habits but as Nicolas had all too clearly pointed out, no one was queuing up to f*ck her.
"It's better if you hurt me then, is that it? You think bringing him up in such a manner is justified because I got a few guys hard in a bar? What gives you the right? You're not my father, Nicolas. Stop acting like you are."

His eyes turned hard once more, "And throwing Samantha in my face was justified?" he asked, "At least what I said to you wasn't true." and yet what Lyra said to him had been the truth. Partially anyway. He wasn't trying to control Lyra because he couldn't control his relationship with Samantha, but at the end of the day he knew Samantha didn't love him.
"As for your father, and Julian, neither of them are here. I earned the right to give a damn about you Lyra, because I am here. I'm the only one who's been here this whole f*cking time. We may fight. I may even say some unforgivable things, but at the end of the day I'm here for you. So I get to care."

She simply stared at him. She had pulled the trigger first but when it came to the ones they loved it should all have been off limits. She was wrong to have said it and she might have apologized except...
"Don't say his f*cking name!" she screamed at him suddenly, not hearing anything else he said following it. She grabbed the nearest thing to her, a pillow from the sofa, and chucked it at him. "Don't talk about him! Shut up! Shut up!"

He pushed forward, angry, bitter, and he didn't know what it was about her that made him want to push.
"He's gone Lyra! And it's not your fault, it's his. You deserve better than that. You deserve better than what you're doing to yourself because of him."
He dodged whatever objects she threw at him.

"I'm not doing anything! Shut up, Nicolas!" She shook her head violently at his words, they sounded nothing like comfort to her ears. She threw another pillow from the sofa at him as she screamed for him to be quiet. "Stop talking! Shut up! You don't get to talk about him!"
She moved back as he pushed and prodded at her. She couldn't listen to his lies. Of course they were lies because Nicolas was claiming that Lyra had once cared for that man and that couldn't be true! She didn't care for him, she didn't love him. She wouldn't be so stupid and pathetic to let herself fall in love. Love was a trap for the weak. It was a farce. Lyra was better than that. She didn't get attached so she couldn't possibly get hurt.
Lyra continued throwing the pillows at Nicolas until she lifted the final pillow and saw her wand was laying there underneath it. She hesitated for a moment, looking up at Nicolas before she reached for it.

He was frustrated. He couldn't put a reason behind the frustration, other than the fact that Lyra was infuriating. But there was another reason. Lyra was so broken up over a man who had fought being with her, and then who had hurt her knowing how vulnerable Lyra truly was. It wasn't that Nik blamed Julian exactly, but he knew the man had his own issues, and he didn't fight hard enough to fix those issues before dating Lyra. Now they were all messed up.
But Lyra let it happen. She blinded herself to Julian's faults. She was so desperate to be with him and to have him love her that she broke after he left. Once again Nik was there to sweep up the pieces and he was wretched at it. But he had been the only one to stick through it all. Her family had abandoned her. Julian had abandoned her. And Sam had no idea what all was happening to her friend. But Nik did. And it was Nik who cared for her, Nik who had to deal with the tantrums, the cutting, the broken pieces. What did he get in return?
He had just dodged another pillow and paused to look at her, there was a sad expression on his face, he wasn't reaching her.

Lyra held her wand trained on Nicolas, her hand was shaking slightly. "You're a liar, Nicolas, and I don't want to hear anymore from you. Go pretend you care about somebody else, because I don't need or want anything from you. I'm not falling for your tricks anymore!"
Her voice shook as she spoke. She took another step backwards and realized she had come to the wall. She placed her free hand on the flat surface behind her, as if to steady her as she held her wand on the man she thought to have been her friend.

He was mildly surprised when she turned his wand on him, but then not surprised at all. Nik had one method, it wasn't always successful, but it was the only way he knew. He pushed.
"I'm the liar? Look at you. So determined to prove that he meant nothing to you, that none of us do. If that's true then use it." he said referring to her wand, "I don't mean anything to you after all the sh*t we've been through, then go ahead."

"You are a lair! You lied to me, Nicolas! You said only the owner could go in, but Costa let you in! Why you? Why did he listen to you? At first I thought it was just because you have a power over people, everyone listens to you because you know how to throw money and threats around properly. But Costa wouldn't need your money and he wouldn't care about your threats. So you lied to me!"
Lyra had had time to replay the evening over and over in her mind. The house elf's refusal to let her into the mansion. Her deranged attempt to force her way in. The resulting arrest. And then Nicolas swooped in and saved the day, because that is what he likes to do. And not only did he save her from any serious jail time, he let her into the mansion to accomplish her mission. He let her in. Nicolas had the power and authority over the house elf, and the elf caved to his words. She was stupid to not notice it at the time, but she wasn't in her right mind.

"I didn't lie to you." he said in a hard voice, "Only the owner could go in." he waited a moment for Lyra to understand on her own before supplying the answer.
"I own the estate Lyra."
