After his head had cleared from all of the alcohol, Alek realized that he had made a grave error in how he handled Christine the previous night. She'd stormed out of not only his office, but had also packed her things and by morning she was nowhere to be found. Alek assumed she had gone to stay at a hotel, or possibly had returned to her family home. But he couldn't rule out the possibility that she had already or would shortly seek out his bastard of a half-brother, Dorian. Alek needed a little insurance that the forlorn couple stay as such.
There were several wolves whom he trusted, but only one he felt could properly get the job done. He summoned Maxine for a chat.

While Max inherently respected her alpha, she also had a casualness about her that defied pomp and circumstance. It wasn't in her to show deference. She walked as though she knew herself to truly be the badass she appeared. Her time was valuable. She was valuable. And that earned her a little more respect, even from those that ranked above her.
She had recently completed a territory transition in one of the border forests. That was a mild way of saying she had either used her considerable charms to ensure a peaceful takeover or her deadly skills to quicken a hostile one.
"I'm back for five minutes and already you're putting me to work. You could at least pretend you're happy to see me, or you know get me a cheeseburger or something."

"I was under the impression you enjoyed it when I sent you on missions. Perhaps I should seek out a more capable wolf to take care of matters." Alek smiled at Max as she entered the room confidently and with more swagger than most of his other wolves combined. In her short time with the Eiriksen pack, Maxine had more than proven herself loyal and fiercely capable.
"I have a job to discuss with you, then you can be on your merry way and buy yourself a bloody cheeseburger." Max's causal nature also brought out a similar side in Alek and he felt comfortable giving her a ribbing while maintaining his authority as Alpha.

"What more capable wolf?" she asked with a smirk as she sat down and crossed her legs putting her arms on the arm rests on either side of the chair - a true power pose. Max's real talent lied in her ability to simultaneously be intimidating and inviting. You knew she was going to chew you up and spit you out alive, but you went willingly to the slaughter anyway.

"I'm sure I could drum up someone," he mused. "But then, you do have the assets I am looking for." Alek gave a brief but noticeable look over her figure and smiled. He sat on the edge of his desk, folding his arms across his chest.
"I have someone I want you to keep an eye on. Make sure he's not a threat to our pack."

Max's smirk widened an imperceptible amount as Alek 'considered' her assets.
She was no stranger to satisfying her carnal desires, and Alek was as tempting as they came, but she had her own reasons for never pursuing anything beyond a mutually satisfying flirtation. And Alek didn't lack for other women to fill his bed to notice Max's absence from it. But it still felt good to know he noticed.
Until he told her of her assignment, then his flattering once over felt more like a softening technique as he essentially stuck her on babysitting detail.
A singular brow rose, but she didn't voice any objection. Instead she asked, "What kind of threat do you think he is?"

"I reason to believe he may be attempting a grab for power. He's already wormed his way into my sister's good graces, no doubt thinking it will soften me to him. But I will not be so easily infiltrated."
"You'll need to get close to him, see what, if anything, he's hiding. And keep him distracted. The less time he has to plot against me the better." Alek turned slightly and took a folder from his desk, tossing it onto Max's lap. Dorian's picture and personal information were inside.

She resisted the urge to reply that he was paranoid and thought everyone was making a grab for power. Alek was a good leader, a brilliant Alpha who truly cared about his pack, but there were parts of him that was all Eirik, and Eirik was all bad.
She couldn't conceal the knowing look she gave him as he asked her to keep the target distracted. She understood her role perfectly and wasn't insulted by it. He would never order her to sleep with a target, but with her looks she didn't have to take things that far unless she wanted to.
When the file fell open on her lap, her mouth curved into a smirk, perhaps the task wouldn't be so dreadful after all.
"I take back the cheeseburger comment..." she said her eyes quickly scanning the written information before she held up his picture, "this...Dorian Humbert assignment is better."

Alek sneered at her reaction. "Control yourself," he said with an annoyed tone. "Just do the job and keep your baser thoughts to yourself."
He didn't see what it was about his brother that made women act as if he was a gift from God with a shiny red bow on his head. Christine was practically punch drunk over him and now Maxine was as giddy as a school girl. Perhaps they had both failed to notice the ten foot pole rammed up his backside.
"It goes without saying that you say nothing of this in front of my sister." Alek was thorough. Even if something could go without saying, he said it anyway to be sure everyone understood.

Max visibly rolled her eyes when she was ordered to control herself. Men were always intimidated by a woman's appetite, often preferring to be the hunters than the hunted, but Max was a huntress in every sense of the word and she wasn't ashamed of her desires, even if her alpha found them unseemly.
She also would have laughed if she could hear Alek's giddy comment. She found Dorian attractive certainly, but it was a job, like any other job.
"Heaven forbid I find the man attractive." she muttered closing the file and tossing it on Alek's desk.
"I know how to keep my mouth shut." she said mildly offended that he thought otherwise.

"Good." Alek turned and walked around his desk to sit in the chair. He looked at her again, his eyebrows raised. "I'm not opening a home for wayward wolves, you have your mission get on with it." He grinned at her to show he was not serious, but he had nothing else on his agenda to discuss with her.

"Someone's cranky today." she said leaning back in the chair showing no signs of moving. She eyed him speculatively. Alek wasn't a rainbows and sunshine type, but she had just returned from very cleanly acquiring a vital piece of territory from him and all he had for her was a babysitting job and brief snarls.

He sat forward in his chair, leaning onto the desk. "And what would give you the idea I'd be anything but, love? Don't tell me you're needing validation for a job well done... I had higher expectations of you." He smiled as she sat there making herself more comfortable in the chair. He enjoyed her.

"And here I was thinking that a new woman in your life would soften you up some." she smirked. The pack talked, Alek's involvement with Christine wasn't by any means a secret, but Max was probably one of the few wolves bold enough and secure enough in her position to call him out on it.

Alek's smile faltered for only a moment as he continued to look at Max. He leaned back in his chair and locked his fingers together on his lap.
"You're not the only one on a mission, love," he said simply, still forcing himself to believe Christine was a means to an end.

Max lifted her chin in understanding, "Ah." she said with only a small hint of relief, though that too was a mystery since she never showed any interest in Alek in 'that' way.
Finally she sighed and stood up. She stretched sensuously like a cat almost and yawned, "Work work work." she grumbled turning on her heel to leave, "I'll be expecting that pat on the head after this job. I think I've earned it."

"Now, now. Let's not jump the gun. You take care of Dorian Humbert, then we'll see about that praise you so crave. Oh and Max," he said just before she left, "check ins should be weekly. I want a close eye on this one."

She supposed she should have been honored he trusted her with such a mission, but at the same time she questioned what kind of threat Dorian Humbert could pose to the Alpha of the Eiriksen Pack.
"Yessir." she mock saluted him at the door with a wink before leaving the house. She'd get a cheeseburger, then do a little recon on her target.
