Lord Voldemort She was overstepping, Bellatrix knew this. But the Daily Prophet, hell even the Quibbler, were full of stories of terror but none of them featured her master or his devoted followers. Bellatrix was growing concerned that her beloved Dark Lord was being overshadowed by this serial killer known only as "M". What a stupid moniker.
She approached the Death Eaters secret headquarters cautiously, removing the wards temporarily to allow her to pass without being met with a most painful and immediate death. As she entered the old house she moved slowly, trailing her fingertips lightly along the faded wallpaper of the corridor, searching for her master. She was unannounced and was expecting to be met with displeasure, but she knew his vexed demeanor would fade away as it always did for the bond she shared with Lord Voldemort was one that transcended the formalities required of other Death Eaters.

He watched her move the way a predator might watch its prey. Curious, entranced, but never forgetting his place or hers, though the lines might have blurred from time to time. Growing tired of her shuffling he made himself visible from the shadows.
"To what do I owe this unexpected visit?" he asked carefully enunciating and giving emphasis to the word unexpected.

Bella jumped slightly at the sudden sound of his voice breaking through the silence. She turned to see him, her heart racing. Bowing deeply, she looked up at him from the floor.
"My Lord," she said in sultry voice she reserved for only him. "There have been stirrings among the wizarding community. A new player causing havoc."

"And you've come to do what exactly?" he asked her, circling around her bowed form. He appeared utterly disinterested in her 'news' and far more interested in her.
Finally he took a seat on an elevated dais that suddenly came into view. His robes flared out dramatically as he waited for her answer all the while he read her mind.

She felt the heat of his eyes on her as he circled, like a hawk with its prey. Bellatrix was excited by his predatory nature.
She spoke more boldly than was appropriate, but her passion for their cause and for her Lord fueled her. "His antics are stealing your spotlight, my lord. The people are no longer concerned with your followers and our rightful extermination of the unworthy. Our mission has all but been forgotten in favor of the terror he instills indiscriminately."

"Ah so you've come to warn me." he concluded with a deceptive calm. He approached her with lethal grace, his movements were slow and his manner unconcerned. He reached to touch her, the back of his fingertips caressing her cheek.
"Tell me Bella, do you think me a fool?"
His fingers trailed from her cheek to the back of her head lightly caressing the nape of her neck.

Her chest heaved with every deepening breath she took, eager for the closeness between them. His soft touch was electric, coursing through her entire body. But his words caused her a slight panic.
"No, my lord! I only meant to express my concern." Her eyes were wide, searching his face for some sign of approval.

His hand twisted in her hair pulling her head back, "Your concern!" he hissed, "Am I not your Lord?! Do I appear so weak as to have concerns?!" he pulled tighter and forced her on her knees.
After a moment he loosened his hold and soothed the ache with his fingertips, "Ah Bella..." he sighed, "It displeases me that you doubt me so."

She gasped as her head was forced backwards, the pain causing liquid to pool in her eyes. She felt her body give way to the pressure and fell to the floor, but still the pain remained. A breathy cry escaped her lips before finally she was released.
"Forgive me, my lord. It was not my intent to question you." Her voice was strained with pain, not only the physical pain that had brought her to her knees but the emotional pain of placing doubt and mistrust in his eyes. She needed him to know that there was no one more loyal than she.

If there was a single skill set that could be responsible for Tom Riddle's transition to the Powerful Dark Lord he was today, it was his ability to see through others and manipulate them to his will. He was charming when he needed to be charming, he could play any role required of him as long as the ends justified the means. Above all he never cared who or what got in his way.
He read Bella easily, she was so willing and eager to please. She bled loyalty. He knew he could push and punish her at will and she would try even harder to please him. And with a single gesture he owned her soul.
He ran his hand through her curls, "There now." he said as though he were soothing a wayward child that had been spanked and was now crying.
"Trust in me Bella, all will be well."

"Yes, my lord," she said through heavy breaths as she willed her tears to vanish. A single drop rolled down her cheek, taunting her for being so weak as to not trust completely in her master.
Bellatrix lifted her head, looking at her dark angel's face. "I'm sorry for doubting."

He continued to stroke her hair gently, as his voice gentled, almost carrying a faint plea in his tones.
"Bella I rely on you..." he said softly, "You claim that you are and always will be my most faithful servant." he paused unnecessarily for her agreement then continued as he brought her chin upward, "Above all you must set an example of trust, devotion, and belief in me and our cause. If you doubt then you open the path for others to do so as well."
Bella of course had no such power. He could just as easily rule with fear and punishment as he often did concerning the other Death Eaters, but it was what she needed to hear, and there was room yet for it to become truth.

There was no one more faithful than Bellatrix. She nodded vigorously to prove it to him. She would do anything he asked of her, without hesitation. But she had wavered tonight. She had allowed the rumors and the media to overcome her common sense and replace it with doubt in her master. Her love.
"Yes. Yes, my lord. It will not happen again. I'm sorry for faltering, but no more. You are malevolent and righteous. I will not fail you." There was a longing in her voice, a need for his approval. She needed him to know that there was nothing she wouldn't do for him.

Voldemort was aware of the situation, and like any opportunist he was grateful. He could not have planned for better. With all eyes on this madman no one would have eyes on him or his followers. There was a time for destruction and a time for deception. He had struck fear into the hearts of the wizarding community at large with the attack on Hogsmeade, a bit of sport to whet the appetite of his followers, but what he had planned next would break the foundation of the community itself. He had to merely bide his time.
"Very well." he said magnanimously, "You may prove yourself to me." he offered her.
"The attack on Hogsmeade, this player as you called him, the community is rife with fear. People will do anything to protect themselves, and the ones they love. They are looking for strength, and that is what we will be. A community of the strong and powerful, we will offer shelter, protection, community in exchange for loyal service. Go now and find me recruits to build our army."

Her expression became hopeful as he permitted her to prove how devoted she was to him. Bellatrix rose to her feet, meeting her love's eye as he told her what she must do to earn back his trust. More recruiting.
Normally she would have sulked, in private of course, about such a remedial task but she had already brought in several new followers for Lord Voldemort and they had proven useful. Bella knew her master believed her more than capable of building his army but it wasn't simply bodies he would need, though the more the merrier when it came to public opinion. He needed followers that were willing to die for the cause, true Death Eaters not just hangers on. Bellatrix could sway the reluctant and tempt the innocent but she would guide the worthy to her master's feet.
"Yes, my lord." She lowered her head respectfully before turning to leave.

He smiled, then called her back, "Bella." he waited for her to be within reach, he brushed a strand of hair out of her face admiring the beauty and devotion she held for him. He kissed her forehead.
"Don't disappoint me."
