Kate Donaghy Dorian knew that his removal from the M case had been for the best. Kate knew, somehow, of his feelings for Christine which had compromised the case significantly. He was lucky a reassignment was all the punishment he had be given, as his indiscretion warranted much more punitive measures. He wouldn't have been surprised if he'd been released from the Auror Department altogether, but then Kate seemed to have a soft spot for him ever since that black day when she told Dorian they believed Christine was dead. Maybe his lenient punishment was a form of an apology for the strife he had been put through that day. He didn't deserve it leniency, but he was grateful for it.
Of course, Lex was hellbent on having him connected with Christine in some way, and had managed to talk Dorian into using her for information on the goings on at Hogwarts. Involving Christine in yet another one of his cases was really pushing the barrier of what he would be allowed to get away with.
He tried not to think of that, or Christine, as he reviewed the information of the Dark Arts case he was now working. Dorian sat on the edge of his desk, staring at a bulletin board. It was sparse, as they hadn't had any big breaks yet. But he had left Lex in charge of any communications with Christine, and she hadn't returned with any new information yet. So he'd make due with what they had. He studied the facts, trying to find something hidden in plain sight.

Kate would have been surprised if Dorian came to her with his thoughts. His reassignment wasn't due to punishment at all. With so many other aurors focusing on M some high ranking members of the Ministry pondered the vulnerabilities the department was facing particularly where sneak attacks might be concerned. M seemed like a distraction for something even more sinister. Seeing as how prominent pureblooded families had been abducted it was pretty obvious that M wasn't related to the Death Eaters. They needed a good head to lead up other investigations and Dorian was chosen.
Kate would have preferred to keep him on the M case knowing that it was due to the connection Dorian had to Christine that would give him an extra edge in the investigation. She also knew that he and Lex were still in contact with Christine, which is why she was going to Dorian with the recent development.
She knocked on his door.

Dorian was thankful for the distraction of the knock on his door. He was having no success making headway on the case without new information. Dorian stood and flattened the front of his suit jacket as he walked to the door.
"Good afternoon," he said politely as he saw Kate. He stepped back from the door and let her enter the office. "To what do I owe this pleasure?"

Kate looked down not quite meeting his eyes, "Truthfully? You're going to hate the sight of me." she sighed.
She entered his office and closed the door behind her, then set a file down on his desk.
It held the most recent victim's crime scene photos. Simon was consistent in his torture, the girl was mutilated and horribly disfigured. To date it was the most gruesome attack. After the photos was a letter:
"i carry your heart with me(i carry it in my heart)i am never without it(anywhere i go you go,my dear;and whatever is done by only me is your doing,my darling)
Soon, my love.
The most horrifying image was last, the wall with 'Darling Christine' written in blood behind the victim, the victim's heart nailed beneath it with a railroad spike.

His smile faded the second she avoided his eyes, before she even spoke. This would not be a pleasant meeting. He couldn't remember the last time he had been in a pleasant meeting. They were certainly in an age of terror.
He moved around the desk to sit behind it as she placed a new file on his desk. For a moment he thought he was being taken off his newest case. Maybe the higher ups had caught wind of his indiscretions and were demanding he be demoted. But he quickly realized this was not a new case, but an old one.
"I'm not on the M case, any longer," he reminded her as he turned over each photograph one by one, progressing through the file until he reached a hand written letter. Dorian didn't understand why Kate was showing him the latest M victim. As he moved his hand he saw one last picture and his heart stopped.
He stood instantly and with a look of terror on his face he asked "where is she?"

"She's still at the castle. She's safe there. If we had known who she was to begin with we would have probably insisted she stay there. But I thought you should know." she told him.
They had notified Montgomery security about the situation. Truth was, Montgomery money could afford a large army of protection, even if the grounds weren't magically protected to keep the family members safe.

With the sudden surge of adrenaline Dorian had forgotten that Christine was wealthy heiress. He forgot she was seventeen. He forgot that she had lied to him. His only instinct was to protect her. His heart was racing.
Dorian nodded numbly and slowly sat back in his chair. "The Montgomery Estate," he said almost to himself. The Montgomerys were one of the richest wizarding families of their time. They could afford top-notch security and there hadn't been a robbery on the family's property since before Dorian was even born. It was quite possibly one of the safest places for Christine to be. "Good. She'll be safe there."
He thought for a moment and then looked at Kate. "We should send someone, as a precaution." He wanted to volunteer, but having regained his senses he knew it was a bad idea and kept his mouth shut.

Kate on the other hand thought he was being coy, "You up for the job then?" she asked, no hint of a smile on her face. Kate knew something had happened between the pair, and she didn't judge Dorian or Christine in the least, of course she didn't judge in general.
"I'll let them know you're coming." she said turning for the door.

"What? No," Dorian said compulsively. He stopped himself and regain composure. Wiping a piece in invisible dust from his suit he said, "I'm needed on the Dark Arts case. It's really taking off and I don't want this," he gestured to the file, "to interfere with the investigation. I'm sure there is someone else available to work security detail for Miss Montgomery."

Kate looked down then back at him, "Dorian look, I don't know what happened between you and Miss Montgomery. Frankly it's none of my business. But we can't contain what happened. There were several witnesses before we got there, it's only a matter of time before the details come out in the papers. That sick bastard has Paige writing for him, and he threatens to harm more girls if she doesn't write. In short, Christine's going to find out about this. I'm not telling you to take time off of your case, if it will interfere with work, then that's not my place either, but I don't think she should receive this kind of news from the media. Someone should be there for her. Someone she trusts. Someone who makes her feel safe."
That was all Kate said before leaving Dorian to think about it.

Kate was right. Christine deserved to be told by someone who cared for her. Reading about it in the paper, of Godric forbid hearing rumors of it from her classmates would be the absolute worst way to find out.
Dorian pulled a piece of parchment from his desk and dipped his quill into the inkwell. He scrawled a hasty note to Aleksandra "Lex" Eiriksen asking her to come to his office as quickly as possible. He charmed the message which folded itself into a paper airplane and set off to find Lex.
Dorian opened the file again and looked at the final picture. His expression grew angry and he quickly closed the file and pushed it to the side of his desk.

He was actually in luck as Lex was headed to his office at that particular moment. The note flew straight to her almost causing her to drop the papers she had been carrying. She laughed then two seconds later opened the door.
"Got your note." she said with a cheeky smile, "I was on my way here. Was that Kate that just left?" she set the papers down on his desk and took off her jacket, she was moving fast and talking animatedly. She caught his expression immediately, "What is it? What's going on?"

Dorian pointed his wand at the door and snapped shut. He looked to the chair in front of his desk, signaling that she needed to sit down. He picked up the file on M's latest victim and handed it to her without a word.

"Oh my god.." her mouth fell a little further as picture after picture horrified her. She knew immediately that it had to be about Simon, and she was heartbroken that another girl had suffered because of him. But bile literally rose from her gut at the last image, she tamped the feeling down and set the photos aside.
"My God..." Lex said shaking her head, "That poor girl."

He waited silently, not looking at her reactions to the pictures or the poem. When she put the file aside he looked up and met her eye. "I need you to tell her about it. Christine deserves to hear about this from someone who cares about her. Someone she feels safe with."

Lex started to nod when Dorian asked her to tell Christine, but as he went on about needing to hear it from someone who cared about her and someone she felt safe with Lex realized what he was doing.
"You bloody coward. You're trying to send me in, but you know just as I do that she should hear it from you."
Lex gave him a disgusted look.

"Don't start with this, Lex. I told you I couldn't see her anymore. Just tell her and try not to scare her."
Dorian knew he was being a coward but he was likely to slip up if he went to see her under such distressing circumstances. They would be too vulnerable. It was easier to have Lex take care of it.
"She trusts you," he added for good measure.

"Uh huh, and is that what's best for you or for her? Cause frankly my dear I don't give a damn. She was the one who was tortured for weeks by this man, and if it will make her feel one iota safer or happier to see you, then I refuse to indulge in your selfishness. Hell Dorian I just looked at those pictures and I want to run and hide."
Lex second guessed her passion to have Dorian see Christine, it may cause some discomfort in the long run, but it would get them through the short run, and after what Lex had just seen it was clear this was about survival not comfort.

Dorian clenched his jaw as Lex perfectly laid out how he was being an ass. Christine had been through so much and it caused Dorian physical pains in his chest to think of her frightened and crying. He needed to be the one to tell Christine what was happening.
He looked at Lex, annoyed. "Your brother was right. You are pig-headed."

Seeing that she had won the argument she smiled at him, "You must really be annoyed with me if you're in agreement with Alek." she said on a sigh. She was still slightly shaken by what she had seen. Some of the aurors had said she returned to work too quickly, and while she disagreed with them, she was starting to think that it was a good thing they had been reassigned.
Lex was not easily overtaken, the fact that she had been struck down still sat poorly with her.
"Don't be cross with me. You know I'm always right."
