Lyra wasn't exactly hiding from Mason, though she hadn't talked with him much since their double date with Sam and Nicolas. Things were spiraling quickly out of control and it was just easier to steer clear of Mason until she could figure out how to answer the questions he had for her. What did Nicolas mean when he said Mason didn't know who Lyra was? And what was Lyra giving up when she said she couldn't do this anymore?
Lyra had the answers for his questions, but they weren't answers that would lead to any sort of future between Lyra and Mason. And that was what Lyra believed she wanted. Until she saw Julian again. She had spent almost an entire day with Julian and while she left the next morning with a question mark hanging over their relationship, she knew that she couldn't string Mason along anymore.
Lyra was running Sam's magazine while creating problems that only Samantha could fix in order to take her mind off the torment of her cousin's kidnapping. This had been the paramount task in Lyra's life and it easily created an excuse to avoid talking to Mason. But he had sent an owl, several owls actually, asking when they could speak. She was running out of excuses and when Samantha said she was feeling well enough to handle the magazine for the day, Lyra had no more reasons to put it off.

Mason wanted answers. He wasn't sure what had happened with Nik and Lyra. Their fight and ensuing avoidance made him angry. It wasn't that Mason couldn't appreciate what was going on in Sam's life right now, nor did he begrudge Lyra helping Sam, but he deserved to know just what was happening.
When she wrote him saying that she was available Mason questioned whether or not he even wanted answers anymore.
Still he was there at her door when he said he'd be. He knocked.

Lyra had asked Mimsy to leave for the afternoon. The house elf meant well but she sometimes interfered and Lyra didn't need any more distractions. This would be hard enough.
Lyra opened the door almost immediately. Mason was always very prompt and she had been pacing in front of the door for the past five minutes, preparing herself. She smiled at him, having forgotten exactly how handsome he was. Being with Julian had dulled her memories of Mason. "Hello."

Mason saw her. She looked beautiful. "Hello." he said still looking at her, "I had a thousand things to say, and I can't think of a damned one." he told her a little surprised.
"I missed you."

Lyra's smile grew. "Come in," she said as she stepped aside to allow him to pass. Oh Merlin, he smelled good, too. Damn him, this was not going to be easy.
"Do you want something to drink?"

"Sure." he said, though at the moment he probably would have said yes to just about anything she said.
"Where's Mimsy?" he asked expecting the house elf. While Mason was normally indifferent to house elves and servants, Mimsy was an exception. The elf seemed to adore him, and he had become quite fond of the creature.

Lyra moved to the bar and fixed him a drink. With her back still to him, she lied. It was stretching the truth really, but a lie nonetheless. She told so many lies and kept so many secrets. Mason would definitely be better off without her. "She's taking care of some errands for me. Works been hectic and I haven't had much time for anything else."
She turned and handed Mason a glass filled with dark liquid, an apologetic look on her face. If she had any idea of what to say she would have made time earlier, even with the chaos she was arranging for Samantha to fix. But Lyra used work as an excuse to hide from facing the truth of her situation.

"I've noticed." he said watching her keenly. He took the drink from her and took her hand as well.
He brought her knuckles to his lips, "Is everything alright Lyra? You can tell me whatever it is."

Lyra inhaled and held the breath in her lungs, then she looked to the sofa. "Let's sit," she said carefully. Although she had made up her mind, it hadn't made this any easier for her. She really did like Mason and she didn't want to hurt him, but he deserved to know about Julian. They were friends and Nicolas was right; it would come up sooner or later. She wished it could be later but knew sooner was better.
"I know I owe you some answers, Mason. But I need you to know first that I really like you, and I meant it when I said I wasn't after you for your money or status. I didn't want you to fight with Nicolas, you shouldn't have to fight with your friends over some girl."

Mason already didn't like the tone of this conversation. He sat up indignant when she finished speaking, "First of all Lyra, you're not just some girl. And friend or not Nicolas had no right to say what he said about you. I'd hit him again and enjoy it the bloody idiot. Third I'm in this Lyra, so whatever you're about to say, just don't, just-" he put his hands on her face and pressed his lips against hers.
He liked her, it was possible that he was falling for her, and if Nik was scaring her off then Mason needed to prove that he wasn't scared.

Lyra felt a pang of guilt as Mason admitted she was not "some girl". It would have been so much easier if he viewed her like that, but she was well aware that they had feelings for each other and that made it more difficult to bear the look in his eye as he spoke.
And while Lyra very much agreed that Nicolas deserved to have his ass kicked for what he had said about Lyra to Mason, there was also guilt for that as well. She was well aware of her reputation while at Hogwarts, and the fact that Julian, Nicolas' best mate, was brought in to save her reputation after her affair with Rystain had soured and that she had since slept with Julian, it would be easy to see why Nicolas had made the assumption that she and Mason were sleeping together. But she certainly wasn't using her body to control him.
Mason silenced her with a kiss and she fell right back into the same pit she had spent nearly a month trying to climb out of. She wasn't just being kissed, she was kissing him in return and for that she was going to burn.

Mason wouldn't take things further, he knew that there was something holding Lyra back and he respected her and their relationship to wait until she was ready. But damn if he wouldn't convince her to stay with him with his body.

She fought with herself again. She knew this was wrong. She had cheated on him with Julian and she was trying to break it off after the fact. That was despicable enough. But to kiss Mason now...
She pulled back from him slowly. She had to tell him now before this continued. She was an adult now, and this was too important to hide from like a child.
"You really are a wonderful man, Mason." But we can't be together. But there's someone else. But I was unfaithful. There were so many buts and yet she left all of them in her head.

"I was beginning to think you didn't notice" he teased her.
There was a sudden pecking at the door. Mason turned to see an owl at the window.
"You've got mail sweetheart."

She turned, looking toward the window and saw an eagle owl with a pale blue envelope. Lyra rose and let the bird in, recognizing the stationary instantly. "Work," she explained to Mason as the owl flew off.
Lyra brought the envelope back to the sofa with her and opened it with a sigh. She quietly read over the brief letter and gasped. "They've found Sam's cousin!" She looked up at Mason, an unreadable expression on her face. "But...I have to go."

"I understand." he said knowing that the conversation was far from over. He was happy for Sam, thrilled really if he thought about it, but at the same time he wished he wasn't losing her. Or maybe he already had lost her.

Mason didn't argue, he just accepted it because he was a good man. The guilt was mounting. She felt compelled to explain, though he didn't request an explanation. It was more for Lyra's benefit, to prove to herself that she really couldn't break up with Mason now because she didn't have the time. Mason deserved at least that much.
"I wouldn't normally bother, its just that Sam needs me to finish while she's at the hospital with Christine and their family. The next edition is due tonight. Honestly, if it were any other day..."

"Lyra go." he said gently, "If you need to go, then go." he smiled slightly standing up as he did so.
"I'm not going anywhere." he told her reassuringly, then laughed, "Well I mean I am, I've got some errands to run, but I'll be around." he walked to the door.

She wanted to yell at him for being so understanding. Damn him, why did he have to be so wonderful. Mason had no idea what he was doing to Lyra.
She stood as he stood and after fetching her handbag she walked with him to the door. "We'll talk soon," she assured him and herself.

"Soon." he said agreeing and opening the door for the both of them. He proceeded to walk her out of the building, and when they parted he kissed her goodbye.
He needed to make arrangements.
