He watched Diana eat as if it were the first meal she'd had all week. He was somewhat concerned that Diana's taunts about becoming fat and lazy were less teasing and more fortune telling. But she was injured and he would let it go without too much thought.
When Diana finally spoke, he chuckled. "Between the arguing and the sex, I'm surprised we ever eat."

She smiled, knowing it was true Merlin they argued so much, but Diana wasn't sure she wanted to give that up. She liked arguing with him as awful as that was.
"When is Hanley getting here?" she asked finishing the last piece on her plate while Christian was still only half way finished.

The doorbell chimed and Christian chuckled. "There's your answer," he said as he wiped his mouth with his napkin and stood. "Everyone had bloody perfect timing today," he muttered as he headed for the door.
"Good evening," Dr Hanley said, adjusting his horn-rimed glasses. Christian welcomed him in and shut the door behind him. Christian motioned for Hanley to step into the sitting room a moment, away from Diana. Christian quietly explained his concerns with Diana's sleeping habits. "Let me look at her first, then we shall see."
Hanley moved back to the foyer and smiled kindly at Diana. "My, you are looking much better. How do you feel, my dear?"

Diana shot out of her chair when Christian went to get the door. She followed on his heels.
She smiled at the doctor, then gave her most convincing grin, "I feel fine, great really. Better than." as if words alone would convince him.

Christian excused himself, knowing he wasn't wanted or needed for the time being. He moved to the kitchen, put Diana's forgotten plate in the sink, then sat and finished his own dinner.
Hanley laughed at Diana's eagerness. "Yes, yes. I can see that. Let's just take a closer look, hmm?" He brought her into the sitting room and inspected her shoulder, making approving noises as he poked and prodded. Hanley rotated Diana's arm in different directions and asked if it hurt when he moved it. He was satisfied with her response.
"Well then, it appears your shoulder is in working order. I'm sorry that it's not prettier to look at yet, but I think you should be fine. Shall we look at the ribs, then?"

"Trust me it's not my first scar, probably won't be my last." she told him. Her arm gave her a little pain, but nothing she couldn't handle. Her ribs were the real concern, she had managed to really do a number there and it required her to be still to heal properly, Diana wasn't the best at being still.
She laid back and lifted her shirt up so Hanley could examine her still bruised ribs, but clearly she could stretch, and it was only a little tender with pressure.

Dr Hanley had heard similar statements from many of the men Christian employed. All were tough young wizards not afraid to get their hands dirty. Hanley preferred to keep his nose out of their business, of course, and didn't generally ask questions. Christian agreed with this method and it had worked for Christian's father, Grant Ward, as well. But in all his years of working for the Wards, they had never employed a witch for field work, so he knew this was not merely an employee. He could tell immediately, when Christian summoned him the night Diana was injured, that this was someone special to Christian. And with an attitude like that, Hanley could see why Christian liked her. She was stubborn as a mule, they had that in common.
"This bruising looks very nice," he commented aloud. "No more than to be expected at this stage. Does this hurt?" He applied a small amount of pressure to her stomach to check the surrounding areas, and frowned slightly. He checked additional areas along her abdomen, asking about pain as he applied light pressure. "You know, I think we should do some blood work, just be on the safe side. Would you mind?" He gestured for her to sit up as he rummaged through his medical bag.

She met his words with relief, but then sudden desperation as he wanted to do more tests. She took his hand, "Look Doc, you've been really wonderful. And truly I appreciate all you've done to help me, this is the best stitchwork I've ever seen. But if I don't get out of here soon I'm going to kill someone."
She thought about it, she was going to kill someone anyway, but that wasn't the point.
"I'll give you all the blood you want, but you have to give him the okay or we're going to kill each other." she said seriously.

Hanley's concerns were not with her injuries, and Christian wanted her cleared for field work. Hanley was loyal to both his profession and his employer, and Diana's request was putting him in a tough spot. But he believed her when she said they would kill each other if they weren't back out doing whatever it was he pretended not to know they did.
"Oblige me these tests, and I'll let Mr Ward know that you're injuries are healed enough." He drew a vial of her blood and charmed it so that it would travel safely in his bag. Then he cleaned up his equipment.
Christian had finished his meal and cleaned the kitchen, attempting to give Dr Hanley the space he required to deal with Diana. He assumed she was being difficult, as always. But after a while he grew impatient and moved to the sitting room to see how her check up was going. He leaned against the frame of the door, his arms folded across his chest. "Well?"
"I'd say she's fit enough," he told Christian. Then he turned to Diana. "But whenever possible you should rest."

Diana nodded, allowing the doctor to take her blood. She sent him grateful eyes, and a promise that she would "take it easy" whatever that meant.
When Christian entered the room again she stood, "Fit as a fiddle." she said quickly standing and coming toward him.

Christian thanked the doctor and shook his hand before showing him out. He then turned slowly to face Diana. He was waiting to hear her say "I told you so".

She didn't have time to rub it in. She walked past him, "I'll owl Burke, we can get started planning the next hit. I'll need the schematics and routines that your men have." she blew him a kiss and rushed toward the desk where parchment and quills were.

Christian's mouth curled as he shook his head. "And she's back," he said to himself as he went to his office to get the documents his men had put together on O'Grady.

Diana sent the owl and Derek wrote back that he'd be there in the morning. Diana wanted to complain, but she didn't. Tomorrow was soon enough. The real panic was over, she knew she'd be going back into the field soon, that afforded her a little more patience.
Suddenly realizing that it was their last night before going on another mission made her feel strangely warm and almost remorseful. She didn't know where the emotion came from until it hit her like a ton of bricks. They were going out for another mission, they had no guarantee that things were going to be alright, and while that had never bothered her before, she suddenly had something else to lose. If it was their last night Diana was going to make it count.
She went back to their room - when had she started thinking of it as "theirs"?
She disrobed and waited on the bed.

Christian reviewed the information they would be discussing with Burke and established his plan of action, which Diana would likely rip to shreds and insist on something completely different and much more risky. When he came out of his office Diana was no longer downstairs. Is she packing already?
Christian went upstairs, expecting to see the room in disarray but instead he found a much nicer treat. He smiled and joined her in the bed.

Diana smiled as he joined her, "Derek won't be here until tomorrow." she told him wrapping his arms around his neck.
"Just you and me tonight stranger." she said pulling him closer. She intended to show him just how well she felt all night long.
