"After supper," he informed her. "He's got patients all day." This was a lie. Hanley would have come immediately if Christian told him to, but Christian wanted to make Diana wait.

Diana knew Christian was making her wait on purpose. He was the kind of man that if he asked you to jump, you asked how high. A private doctor on the payroll meant that Hanley was available anytime. Christian was just being an ass.
He was so frustrating sometimes it made Diana want to scream. They screamed at each other often. This couldn't be a healthy relationship, then again Diana wouldn't have a clue what a healthy relationship was.
Diana jumped off the couch, "Why?!" she yelled at him, "I'm fine! You know I'm fine. This whole thing is bloody ridiculous Christian. You know I'm not some fragile flower on the verge of wilting at a bit of danger, and the longer we keep these animals alive the longer it takes us to get to Alyx!"

He walked around the sofa and sat across from her, even though she was now standing. "Did I hurt you earlier?" he asked in as calm a voice as he could muster considering she was yelling again.

Diana was staring at him hard, but he took her by surprise with his question. It was a low blow to bring up their morning, thinking about it made her feel warm and soft and she wanted to be angry at the moment.
She also wanted to be tough, "Of course not." then she thought about it and gave a small smile, "Well, maybe a little, but in all the right places." she said fondly.
Her hands were still on her hips, but it was hard to keep angry when the other person was calm.

Christian smirked at her response and gestured for her to come to him. "Then Hanley will clear you and we'll plan our trek to Russia. But until he clears you, I'm afraid you'll just have to let me tend to your every desire."

"It's no fun when you're not yelling back." she said clearly amused as she dropped her arms and walked toward him. She stood between his legs for a moment bringing her hands to his face, she raised an eyebrow, "Every desire?" she asked intrigued.

He raised his eyebrows at her. "Within reason," he replied as he wrapped his arms around her waist.

"Oh the possibilities." Diana thought as she straddled his waist and wrapped her arms around his neck. She grew suddenly serious, there was something she desired from him, many things actually, but something she had a taste of this morning that she didn't realize she wanted until it had happened. Now she wanted more.
"I do want something." she said quietly, seriously, almost vulnerably.

Christian's head tilted to the side, his eyebrows rising with interest. "Is that so?" he asked in a low voice. "Well?"

Diana laid her head on his chest then sighed in contentment.
"This." she answered. She was mildly concerned about his reaction to her soft desire. Sentiment was rough between them. Neither knew what to do when the other was tender or vulnerable. But for the moment Diana was willing to risk it.
This morning when he had watched over her as she slept, it was the safest she had felt in a long while. Sure they had shared each other's bodies, and done things Diana couldn't spell, but her soul cried for the emotional intimacy both were strangers to.

It wasn't the response he was expecting, and initially he was even a little disappointed. But as Diana curled into him, he embraced her and embraced the idea of being tender with no other goal in mind. He smothered the urge to point out that this gentle moment would not be happening if she kept up her insistence that they deal with board members immediately. Instead he kissed the top of her head and held her a little tighter.

It was another reason Christian was good for her. He pushed her and down right forced her when he needed her to. She was afraid of being weak in front of him, being weak in general, he was giving her the opportunity to be soft and still have things be okay.
Alternatively there were other reasons for her recent fatigue and emotional upheaval.
She laid there for a few minutes simply listening to his heart beat, but sooner than she could imagine she was asleep again.

Christian held her for a while longer after she fell asleep. He stroked her hair and watched her eyes flutter as she dreamed. Finally he managed to stand, still holding her in his arms, and carried her upstairs to the bed. She didn't wake through any of the gentle jostling, and Christian worried that she wasn't feeling up to their next hit knowing she would insist on going anyway. He pulled the blanket over her and kissed her head, then headed downstairs to the kitchen to make an early dinner, as they had inadvertently skipped over lunch altogether.

Diana woke alone. She cursed the immediate feeling of loss she felt. She couldn't account for how vulnerable she was feeling or why she suddenly wanted to cry the emotion was truly foreign to her.
She took a deep breath to clear her mind. Everything was fine. She was just tired. This is what happened when you took breaks, you got soft, and the pain set in. Diana needed to keep moving.
She took a quick shower as if she could wash off the feeling of vulnerability, then joined Christian downstairs.
"Thank Godric you can cook." she said inhaling the heavenly scent that was to be their dinner, "I can't cook worth a damn."

Christian turned to her as she entered the kitchen, quickly glancing at the clock to see that she had slept for more than an hour. And she had slept for nearly two hours after their morning romp, which was proceeded by a good nine hours of sleep the night before. Christian was starting to get very worried that Diana was not recovering properly. He'd have to speak with Dr Hanley about this after he looked her over.
"I guess you'll just have to be barefoot and pregnant in front of the bar cart, then," he teased. "I hope you're hungry."

"Ha, ha." she deadpanned when he mentioned being barefoot and pregnant. She didn't glance down to see that her feet were indeed bare.
"I'm starved." she said coming further into the room. And indeed suddenly she felt as though she could eat a mountain full of whatever it was Christian had been cooking.
"This recovery thing is a drag, always being hungry and tired. I'm going to be fat and lazy if I don't kill somebody soon."

"Is that what I have to look forward to when this is all over? A fat, lazy woman in my bed?" He set two plates on the table and then returned to the stove by where he left a glass of scotch. "What would you like to drink?"

"Oh I'm sure you'll find someway of helping me work off the calories." she said with a nonchalant shrug. She was about to request her usual bourbon, but the thought turned her stomach, plus Hanley had requested that she not consume alcohol while taking the medications he was giving her. They had argued about it, and Diana stubbornly refused to take the painkillers citing that the alcohol was more efficient. Tonight however she asked for, "Water."
"I'm dehydrated from all these silly potions Hanley has me on."

He shrugged and brought her a glass of water, then sat next to her. As they ate, Christian wondered what their lives would be like when this was all over. He had considered it before, early on when Diana originally told him about Alyx. Before he and Diana had rekindled their relationship. He would have to clear out space for her to visit on the weekends and he'd attend her graduation.
But now that he and Diana were whatever it was that they were, would they be living together with their daughter? Christian didn't see himself as the traditional family man. He hadn't planned on ever having a child, but now that the thought was less of an concept and more of a fact, he didn't hate the idea. It helped that Alyx would be a teenager, and he'd have missed all the trying parts of raising a child like the sleepless nights, the nappies, and the crying. But he had also missed the important moments like when she took her first steps, or said "dada" for the first time. The future was complicated, and the past was mess.

Complicated and messy described their dysfunction perfectly, but somehow they were making it work. They yelled at each other all the time, except when they were having sex, actually sometimes during that time too. But they were learning. It was a lot to jump into domestic bliss after years of fierce independence and isolation.
This would actually be their first meal without argument, but that might have been because Diana didn't take enough breath between one bite to the next.
Finally she spoke, "You know...between the food and the sex I'm surprised we ever argue." she teased.
