Wyatt couldn't quite explain why he felt so awkward. Arabelle was perfectly right... he could be interested in any girl he wanted. But he couldn't quite escape the feeling that she would judge him badly if he was actually interested in a girl like Harmony. And, yes, he might have had a few flings with girls like her. He wasn't proud of it, though. He didn't really like to be with girls he couldn't respect, and he certainly didn't respect Harmony.
It was more than that, though. It mattered to Wyatt what Arabelle thought of him. And even without Harmony in the picture, the mere suggestion that he brought a lot of girls to the restricted section and that Arabelle was just one of his many "library girls" made him out to be some sort of playboy. He didn't want her to think that about him, or for her to think she was just one of many to him. For reasons he couldn't explain, she was much more than that.
"What if I'm interested in you?" he found himself asking.

Harmony couldn't believe this was happening. She had just been unceremoniously dumped on the floor by Wyatt so that he could chase after some annoying Ravenclaw girl. Clearly Wyatt was blind or at least not as smart as he seemed so fond of telling everyone he was. As if that was supposed to be a good thing. As cute as he was, he didn't really need to have brains, and it was honestly better if he didn't. It might cause a guy to do weird things like chase after brainy girls who weren't really even that pretty instead of staying with girls like Harmony. "Wyatt!" she shrieked, getting to her feet and brushing herself off. Ugh. Now there was probably dust on her black uniform. "How dare you dump me like that? You're going to be sorry for this, you know. No one dumps me!" (Sorry to jump in!) Alecto had been watching this little exchange from the other side of the Slytherin table, absolutely disgusted by the display. She wasn't sure which was worse... the fact that Wyatt apparently lost his brains and was chasing after a ridiculous Ravenclaw (who did she think she was, anyway?) or Harmony for the little display she'd just put on. No, it wasn't a display, it was a tempter tantrum. It as repulsive enough to make her lip curl. Slytherins were supposed to act with more decorum than that, even at their age. Besides, didn't every girl know that quiet, well calculated revenge was better and more effective than a fit any day of the week? It was not her intention to help Harmony by speaking up, or to start an argument, though most students knew not to argue with Alecto. "That was pathetic, Harmony. You should be ashamed."

"What if I'm interested in you?" he found himself asking. "In me?" There was a tone of confusion in her voice that was covering her excitement. Wyatt Templeton interested in her? Why did she feel like she was the center of a bad joke? She was not foolish enough to think that was really the case. There were too many girls interested in Wyatt for her to be the one he was interesting in. As much as she would like to believe he was genuinely interested in her and not just interested in chasing her. She knew she was no Harmony and certainly was not the type of girl that Wyatt normally went for. Snogging and boys were the two furthest thing from her mind. Well, they were up until her little trip to the library. There is no way it would work between them. Beside he would get bored after he got her and she would be the one hurt. "I doubt that you would ever be interested in me. I am not so sure I am your type...."

Wyatt frowned. This wasn't how he had pictured this going. OK, maybe it was a little arrogant to just expect that she would just fall into his arms when he said those words, and he wasn't even sure that was what he had wanted to happen at the time. But the doubt on her face, the confusion... that was certainly not what he expected, either.
"Why wouldn't you be my type?" Wyatt asked. "You have a brain, which is more than I can say about Harmony over there. Honestly, if you tried to compile all that she knows into a book, you'd need a microscope to read it. Do you think that's my type? Dumb girls with pretty faces?"

Arabelle was suddenly feeling guilty about what she had said from the frown on Wyatt’s face. Did she really think that she was not his type or was she just scared to admit how she felt? Harmony’s words were still ringing loud in her head. She was not the only girl. Besides the fact that she could actually read and have an original thought of her own what did she have that all the other girls didn't have? Finally being able to find her balance she stepped closer to him.
“I don’t know…” She glanced over his shoulder at Harmony. “How many other girls have you taken into the library? I mean I can’t even form a complete sentence when you are around me and Harmony…” She looked back up at him through her lashes. “Well, she can bat her eyes and everyone is falling all over her. That’s exactly not my expertise.”

Wyatt had to admit, there had been a lot of other girls. Most of them had just been to flirt with, and some of them he'd even kissed, just to see if he could. But there was a difference between them and Arabelle. Most of those girls he couldn't even remember their names. He'd pass them sometimes in the hall and look away awkwardly, trying to pretend he didn't see them. He almost never talked to any of those girls again, much less cared what they thought of him.
But he cared what Arabelle thought of him. It bothered him to think that she would believe he'd like a girl like Harmony. He had more standards than that.
"Harmony is pretty, yes," he said. "But she's an idiot. I don't like idiots. I've never even taken her into the libary... I'm pretty sure she doesn't even know where it is."
He sighed, knowing this was not about Harmony. He couldn't blame her for doubting him. His reputation had preceded him, and Harmony hadn't helped matters.
"Look, I'm not perfect, and I've made mistakes. But give me a chance. Maybe we could go to Hogsmeade together? No more library."

Arabelle stood there as her mouth fell open and she tried to say something but nothing came out. No more library? She did not expect that. Surely, he did not really mean that. They barely knew each other and even though she knew all about his reputation something about the look on his face made her want to believe that he really wanted to try with her. He wanted try for her and any defense she had up came crashing down in that moment. While the thought made her heart skip a beat what happens when he no longer has to chase after her? Would he still be this interested in her? Taking a deep breath she tucked a strand of her hair behind in her ear.
“I didn't say you had to be perfect Wyatt. No one is perfect especially not me.” She sighed. “I was planning on going to Hogsmeade to pick up a new book...” She spoke softly. “And it wouldn't be terrible if you came with me.”
She moved a step towards him so they were only a few inches apart. “I like spending time with you Wyatt with or without snogging.” He could see her cheeks turning pink as much as she tried to hide it.
As much as she did enjoy making steam come out of Harmony’s ears she did not want him to be with her because he felt bad about the way Harmony talked to her. She wanted him to like her for the same reasons she liked him, for her and not because it was a challenge.

Maybe part of it was that she was a challenge, but Wyatt definitely thought there was more to it than that. She interested him in ways other girls did not. She was a mystery to be solved, a puzzle he wanted to put together. Most girls were, in Wyatt's opinion, open books--and for girls like Harmony, the pages were mostly blank. But Arabelle was different somehow, and he wanted to know more about her.
He smiled his most charming grin when she hesitantly agreed to go with him to Hogsmeade. He knew she was uncertain, and that she probably didn't trust him--why should she? She now knew about his library game, and realized that he wasn't exactly the romantic type. He wouldn't say he was a bad boy type... but he wasn't what the muggles would call a boy scout, either. She would be wise to keep her distance from him.
"OK," he said, as though it was all settled. "Instead of the library, we'll go to the book store."
