Marlene was feeling unusually nervous as she stepped into the lobby of the Ministry of Magic. Today was the first day of auror training, and she was already wondering if she had made the right decision. She had never really thought of doing anything else but becoming an auror, but she never thought that she'd be signing up for a war. The situation with Lord Voldemort was getting more dangerous by the day, and she would almost certainly be called upon to fight.
She had always thought that she would make a mark on the world, that she'd do something that would be remembered. She had no idea what the future held, but she hoped she would be strong enough to face it. At least she'd have her friends by her side. Alice, Frank, Hestia, and Kingsley were all supposed to meet her here in the lobby and they would go up to the auror office together to begin their training.

Alice had planned to wait for Frank, so they could walk in together, but she was impatient. Unlike Marlene, she had no second thoughts or regrets about what she was doing. Yes, there was a war on, and it was only going to get worse before it got better. Some of her friends might not live through it. Maybe she wouldn't, or Frank wouldn't. There was no way of knowing... but one thing she did know was that this was the right thing to do. They couldn't just sit back and let the Death Eaters keep doing horrible things... they could fight to stop them. Alice was ready to accept the risks and do what she had to do.
She stepped into the lobby, and the first thing she noticed was how big everything was. It was massive, with so much space that seemed to stretch on as far as the eye could see. The huge fountain that stood in the middle of the hallway, with the figures of the wizard and witch and the centaur and elf, drew her attention for a long moment. It was sort of creepy, actually, with the magical creatures staring up at the humans with blank adoration.
Nevertheless, Alice pulled out a galleon from her pocket and closed her eyes. A silent wish flashed through her mind: "I wish to be a great auror, and to make a difference in this war."
Then she dropped the coin into the fountain, opening her eyes in time to see it sink within the depths of the water.
Alice stood up and looked around, catching sight of Marlene. She walked up to her friend, smiling brightly. "Hey," she greeted her. "This place is amazing, isn't it?"

Hestia walked quickly through the masses of people. She had been spending more and more time here doing auror things, most of which involved her having her ass handed to her. No one looked her way and no one seemed to notice that she was a fresh faced baby auror in training. They had just finished their seventh year at Hogwarts, summer had come and gone, and it seemed like this would be the first time she had seen her friends since the end of last year.
Hestia felt butterflies of excitement. She would see her friends soon! Although she had been training a little with Kole, her mentor/trainer/kind of awkwardly cute superior, since she had been in her seventh year, this was one of the first times that the whole gang had been together for it.
Stepping out into the large lobby, she automatically made her way towards the fountain in the middle of the room. It was naturally the first place she would look for her friends. Nodding to a couple of people she recognized, she noticed her friends on the other side of the fountain. Alice and Marlene. No sign of Frank or Kingsley. How long had it been since she had spoken to them just to talk?
"Hey girls!" Hestia spoke quietly. Although the room was full, Hestia felt that her words would echo and everyone would hear. After all, they were at the ministry. She quickly gave them each a hug, but she honestly wished she had more time just to hold them. Hestia was tough. That was her role in the group. She was the sturdy one that offered to kick someones ass if they messed with her friends. But now she just wanted a minute to tell them that she loved them and that she wouldn't be so strong if she didn't have them to support her.
"You didn't wait long did you?" Hestia questioned, trying to shake the gloomy thoughts from her head. Although they were becoming aurors in the midst of the war and they would surely fight, she still had this time. She would just have to make the most of it.

Marlene looked up as Alice approached her. She was also overwhelmed by the sheer vastness of the place and what her presence in it meant. She had never questioned that this was where she belonged and what she wanted to do with her life, not since she was a little girl. But now... standing here in front of that... well, frankly, ridiculous fountain... she was just beginning to grasp the magnitude of the situation. This was big. She could no longer tell herself one day... now that day was here.
Maybe her logical brain had finally snapped. She was being silly. This was what she'd wanted.
"It's so big," was all she could manage to say to Alice. "I didn't expect that, you know? I don't know what I did expect..."
She sighed and broke into a smile. "Oh, well, I guess we'll get used to it, right? Where's Frank?"
But before Alice could answer that question, Hestia was walking up to them. Since Hestia had been working here for a little while already, she was no longer as impressed by the size of the Ministry, and that, more than anything else, put Marlene at ease. "Hey, Hestia," she greeted her friend. "We just got here... we were waiting for Frank and Kingsley. You're going to have to show us around the place.... I'm already afraid of getting lost, and I never even got lost at Hogwarts..."
