Kylie was in a great mood. She hadn't been back to see Walter since Ewan arrived in town, but that had been before her next appointment. Arriving at St. Mungo's, Kylie cheerfully walked down the hall of the Psychiatric Ward and waved and smiled at almost everyone she passed. She felt like herself again.
She and Ewan spent time together again like they used to, except for when he was at work. Things felt like they didn't change at all. The only thing that was different was that they were in a different location. Once again, Kylie felt extremely happy. Maybe she shouldn't be as happy as she was, considering her happiness never lasted for long because things always happened, but she couldn't help it.
Carrying two cups in her hand, Kylie made her way to Walter's office. She stopped by and picked up a drink for Walter, just the way he said he liked it.
Carefully, Kylie reached up and knocked on his door just as it was time for her appointment.

Though one would never say that Walter was in a "good" mood, he had to admit that he was quite looking forward to his upcoming therapy session with Kylie. Nikola and Siobhan were out there now, Roman would soon have Zane out of Azkaban, he knew where Josephine was, as well as Colleen. Next he would work on getting Dustin out of prison... and perhaps finding Simone and a few of the other loose ends. Slowly, it was all starting to come together. And though he'd have to take his time with Kylie and Joey, he was looking forward to the challenge. Soon, he'd have them all together again, and he'd find out what they could really do.
In front of him was a list of all of his "children" and their last known whereabouts. The one who troubled him the most was Josephine's brother; he seemed to have fallen completely off the map. Walter was pretty sure he wasn't dead... but he couldn't be sure. It seemed strange that he wouldn't have tried to contact Joey at some point if he were still alive... but as far as Walter could tell, Joey had not bee in contact with her brother. It vexed Walter greatly; he would need as many of the children as he could find, especially after he'd lost several in that experiment several months earlier. And he still wasn't sure that some of them, like Siobhan and Colleen, would be strong enough.
At the knock on the door, Walter twitched slightly. Kylie was here. In one swift motion, he swept the list into a desk drawer, leaving Kylie's file sitting in front of him.
"Come in," he called.

Opening the door carefully, Kylie walked into the office with the two cups in her hands. She closed the door back with her foot. "I brought you something I knew you'd like," she said with a smile as she approached his desk. From the first meeting, Kylie picked up that there was something about Walter that she couldn't put her finger on. He seemed a little off when someone started asking him about his personal life. Of course, she was the same in a way, so she figured maybe that was just how he was. She had no idea that she already knew him and he knew her a lot better than anyone.
"I thought it would be a great way to start off the day with a nice correctly brewed drink," said Kylie placing it on his desk. She moved from in front of his desk to the place on the floor where she sat before.
"How has your morning been so far Dr. Burkhardt?"

She was certainly in a good mood. It struck him right away... and he honestly didn't like it. If it continued, she might decide that she didn't need therapy anymore, and then he would lose the control he was slowly working to regain. He might have to trigger her sooner than intended, and he really didn't want to do that.
But there was no point in getting ahead of himself. He returned her smile with his best imitation of warmth. "Thank you," he said, picking up the cup she had placed in front of him and taking a sip. It was good coffee, and it brought a genuine smile to his face. "You seem to be in a good mood today. What's the occasion?"

"I've had a great past couple of days," she said with a smile in her eyes as she took a drink of her coffee. "I've gotten a lot of things done that I've wanted to do." Kylie crossed her legs as she sat on the floor. She wasn't going to give up her therapy sessions just yet. Although she might have been in a great mood, there was still that small part in the back of her mind that was slightly worried it might happen again.
"Plus, I ran into a person from back home." She placed her coffee in her lap with both of her hands around it. "So, things have been continuing to be great since our last meeting."

Walter continued to watch her with a placid sort of half-smile on his face. For anyone else, this would have been a friendly, interested sort of expression, but for Walter, it was his "guarded" look. He was trying to analyze her, subtly, to see beneath the surface. At first he saw nothing to alarm him, but he saw the tiny little sparkle in her eyes as she mentioned having "run into" someone from home. He did not like this, but you'd never know by his unchanged expression.
"Oh?" he said mildly. "Do tell."

It was rare for Kylie to be excited about something. "Remember Ewan I mentioned before," she started as she glanced over to Walter. There was a light smile on her face that she couldn't hide. "I ran into him in the grocers."
Ewan was sort of like Kylie's anchor. He kept her on the ground and she felt safe with him. She felt like nothing could hurt her while he was around. There was no doubt that she was in love with him, that was the main reason she ran a few months ago. She didn't want to hurt him. Now, he was back here and part of her was afraid that she might end up hurting him, but he was determined that she wasn't. He wanted to be there for her. Kylie had a hard time letting people in, but Ewan was different. He knew how to talk to her and he could persuade her.
"He went looking for me after I ran. Now he's here, things have seemed to be going better."

Walter nearly choked on his coffee. he had been happy to hear that Kylie was single. Relationships were complicated and messy, but someone who would go looking for her when she left him... that was the kind of person who could ground her and keep her stable. He wanted her unstable... he didn't want her emotions to cloud her reactions.
Furthermore, if Kylie had a steady relationship with this Ewan person, she might decide that she could confide in him and not in Walter... and that would simply not do.
He decided rather quickly that Ewan had to die.
But of course, there was no indication of this decision on his face. Instead, he smiled pleasantly at her and looked interested. "Well, that's very good news for you," he said. "I know you need something stable in your life, and it's good to know that you have this young man to rely on. Tell me about him."

Although she didn't realize it, there was now the same trace of a smile that used to be there when Ewan was around. He did make her happy which was something she never really was until they met.
"I met him a long time ago. It was one of those things where you felt like you had already known the person for a really long time and they seem so familiar, and who knows maybe I did meet him one time before but then again I don't remember part of my past. Anyway, Ewan is a great guy. He's always there when I need him to be and he makes me laugh. Laughing is something I never did a lot before I met him. He sometimes fights against me when I'm too stubborn about something and that's a good thing."
It never really occurred to Kylie that neither she nor Ewan could really recall a part of their past until just before she flipped the first time when she ran. The idea just popped back in her head, but she tried to push it out because she didn't want to have the same thing happen again.
"He keeps me from wanting to curl up into a ball and not doing anything. He keeps me going and he's pretty much my best friend."

If Walter had been like anyone else, he would have been hurling things across the room at this point. Even for him, it took an extraordinary amount of effort to keep his face completely expressionless. He was still sitting behind the desk, so he channeled all of his anger and frustration into his feet, his toes tightly curled inside his shoes. This Ewan person... he needed to know who this person was. Immediately. He could not be allowed to interfere with the plans he had for Kylie.
To Kylie, however, he would have seemed perfectly calm and as pleasant as ever. He jotted down a couple of notes, as though he was interested in her nauseatingly happy news. Of course what he was actually writing was a note to himself: send Roman to find out about Ewan.
"Well, it sounds like he's a good influence on you," he said, smiling as though he wasn't already planning to murder the man. "How fortunate that he was able to find you. Did he say how he found you after all this time? What's his name again? Ewan.....?" He trailed off, hoping she would provide the man's last name.

The old Kylie would have been a little on edge about Walter asking her more questions about Ewan. Maybe right now it was just that she was excited he was back that she wasn't thinking clearly. She should have been skeptical, but at this moment she wasn't.
"Ewan MacMurray," she stated, thinking that he wouldn't have any idea who he was. Had Kylie remembered who Walter was, she probably would have grabbed Ewan and fled England while going into hiding. She would protect him from whatever she could.
"He just tracked me here." She did leave out the part about private investigators. Part of Kylie's usually overactive mind was working and didn't let her say it. "We met a long time ago," she continued. "Right after school actually. We ran into each other and he seemed so familiar that I couldn't place it. I still can't place it, but maybe it's my mind playing tricks on me or something."

Walter's benign smile didn't change as he jotted down the name--Ewan MacMurray. He couldn't help thinking how good that would look on an obituary. When the session was over, he would definitely have to contact Roman to see what dirt he could find about Ewan MacMurray.
It was odd, however, how Kylie mentioned thinking that the man was familiar. There shouldn't be a reason why this person would be familiar, was there? He would have expected her to say that of him, not this random stranger. Had she found one of the children that Walter hadn't been able to locate? His first thought was Joey's brother... but it couldn't be him, right?
"Do you have that sort of feeling often?" Walter asked, deciding not to press the issue by asking her more about Ewan. "The feeling that something or someone is familiar, but you can't place it? Sort of a deja vu sort of thing, if you will?"

"It's just with certain people," she said with a shrug. "Take you for instance. I thought I'd seen you somewhere before, but I have never been able to place where. I thought for awhile maybe I'd seen you around here before, but I remember I had the feeling like I'd seen you before the first time I ever saw you."
She had seen at least one other person she thought she had seen before in the local coffee shop, but Kylie didn't really speak to her that much because she thought the girl would think of her as a crazy person.
"However, maybe it's just my mind playing tricks on me. Maybe I'm trying to find ways to fill the missing memories of my childhood. Who knows?" She sighed. "Sometimes I used to try to remember really hard who people were when they seemed familiar, but that would usually send me into horrible headaches. Sometimes I thought I could catch glimpses into the past because images sometimes flashed in my mind just as the horrible headaches came about. Although the images would disappear as quick as they came so I could never really see them."
Kylie took a moment to drink from her cup. "Although I haven't tried to remember in awhile, because I don't want those headaches again."

Walter nodded, taking note of what she said. He was not surprised that she thought he was familiar. He had thought Joey recognized him, and Siobhan had told him on several occasions that he reminded her of someone. But where this Ewan person fit in was a mystery to Walter. Maybe he was a bit rash in planning the guy's murder.... he would have to see what Roman came up with first.
"Interesting," he said mildly, seeming to be very deep in thought. "Can you tell me any other people you thought looked familiar? Describe them, or where you saw them? I suspect that some dormant memory is being triggered... and it may not even involve those exact people, but they remind you of whatever memory has been blocked. I don't want to push your memory too far yet... but I am interested to know about any possible triggers you might have."

"There's a girl in the coffee shop," Kylie started. "Colleen I think her name is. I remember hearing it while I was there. She seems familiar. There was a redheaded girl I only have seen in passing here. I never spoke to her or anything, but she seemed familiar too." Her eyebrows furrowed for a moment as if she were trying to remember something. "As for that, I don't really know anyone else. Just sometimes I have weird dreams at night about not being myself and I recall seeing those people there and talking to them."
Kylie looked from the floor back up to Walter. "But dreams don't really mean anything, right? Dreams just happen because your brain is trying to sort out certain things and people you see only in passing can be there because your brain is trying to make sense of it all." She shook her head for a moment. The feeling of certain people being familiar bothered her. She didn't know why they seemed familiar. She wanted to know answers, but there was no one to go for answers, or so she thought.

So she had recognized Colleen and Siobhan, as well. Interesting... Walter noted this down, just for future reference. It seemed like, slowly, all of his children were finding their way back to him. Perhaps it was a side effect of the training that he hadn't anticipated. If so, it was a lucky one.
If only he could figure out why Kylie recognized Ewan...
"Dreams aren't usually to be interpreted literally," Walter replied. "Dreams are often more... symbolic... Your brain is trying to process things, and sometimes it uses everyday experiences--sights, images, figures--as a way to work through them. Your dreams are trying to tell you something, but it may not be apparent right away."
An idea occurred to him, and he sat up a little straighter. "Kylie, I want you to do something for me. I want you to keep a dream journal. Every time you have a dream, write it down as soon as you wake up. Then bring the journal to your next session and we can discuss anything that happens."

A dream journal? She never thought about it, but maybe a dream journal would help her sort out her thoughts. Maybe certain things could be explained if she could look back. Maybe the dreams could trigger some sort of memory. Of course that probably wouldn't help trigger any memories. The journal would more than likely only cause more confusion, but then again Walter was there to help her figure things out, or at least that was what she thought.
"Alright," she replied. She hadn't really spoken to Ewan about certain people being familiar. She wasn't sure how to really tell him that. He didn't think she was crazy and she didn't want to give him any reason to think that something was wrong. They had only found each other again and she didn't want to cause any worry already.
"I'll try to write down everything I can. The dreams started to happen more often after I saw the redheaded girl and the one from the coffee shop. I mean, I did have a headache or two after meeting Ewan and a dream or two, but things settled out. That was another reason I came here to see Dr. Cardenas at first. It never happened like that before like that and I thought it was rather odd."

The dream diary would help him to figure out just how much she actually remembered, but on the surface of it, it would actually appear as though he was helping her. It seemed like a perfect idea to him. If he seemed like he was actually helping her, she would begin to trust him even more, and maybe she would let him put her under hypnosis. Until then, however, the dream journal would do nicely.
"I'm rather surprised that Dr. Cardenas never suggested a dream diary before," Walter observed, his tone light. It was a subtle attempt to discredit the doctor, to push her closer to trusting him above her. But he also knew better than to push it.
"I know it will seem strange at first, and it might be hard to remember everything in your dreams. But I do think it will help you... and more importantly, it will help me understand how to help you."

A frown crossed her face. Kylie wondered why Dr. Cardenas didn't ask her to keep a dream journal. Maybe that would have already shed some light on the matter at hand, but even if that was the case, Dr. Cardenas made her feel like things might end up being okay. The helpfulness Dr. Burkhardt was providing did make Kylie trust him just a little more. She was still a little wary about him, but that would probably soon fade away.
"Even if the dreams are jumbled up and make absolutely no sense whatsoever?" To her the dreams seemed to be nonsense. Maybe she dreamed more but everyone could only remember so much of one.

"Sometimes those are the most revealing of dreams," Walter replied. "The more jumbled up and confusing a dream may be, the more important it tends to be. It means your mind is confused and is trying to make sense of something. Your dreams are trying to tell you something, but often the message isn't clear. That's what I'm here for."
Walter, of course, didn't actually believe in most of the so-called dream interpretations. Yes, he'd studied them, and he knew about them, but most of it was, in his not-so-humble opinion, all a load of rubbish. But that didn't stop him from using it as a way to make his patients think he was helping them.
