If Elijah had taken a step back and watched himself talking to Dawn, he would have kicked himself. There had never been a female that made Elijah feel nervous or happy, or really any sort of emotion. Of course, he never really had much interaction with other people but still he had never been like this. Dawn made him more nervous and Elijah wasn't sure how much he liked that feeling. He was always on his toes, always alert; however, right now he wasn't alert at all. All of his attention was on Dawn. Those eyes of hers drew him in. Although Elijah might not like the feeling that he felt nervous, but he just did not care.
It was strange for a man like Elijah to suddenly develop these feelings. He could talk to Dylan about it, but he didn't really want to. On the other hand, Dylan was seemingly going through the same thing. Elijah was pretty sure though that Dylan wouldn't really want to talk about Iris.
There was a shy like smile that appeared on his face when she said he looked nice too. He could tell she wasn't just saying words. Dawn was too innocent to really lie to him. Elijah thought that he looked rough. There was a hint of scruff growing on his face, his hair wasn't very well kept, and his clothes were a little tattered, yet, this beautiful female in front of him thought of him differently than he thought of himself.
The thought did cross his mind that he wasn't good enough for her. He was a werewolf after all. There were a lot of complications and he didn't want to tell her his secret. She might run for sure. Dawn's innocence also made Elijah want to be a little more cautious. He didn't want to ruin that.
"I'm glad that you are doin' a lot better. I like seein' you in town." He offered a smile. Elijah had never really been fond of coming into town but now he had a reason to like it.

He might have appeared rough, but Dawn could see through that. All she needed to know about him she could see in his eyes. Maybe he wasn't quite so refined as some other guys, but Dawn wouldn't have known how to talk to those guys. Elijah seemed to connect with her in ways she couldn't begin to understand. After all, there was a wildness in her, too... even if he didn't know about it. She was not a girl who was used to fine, pretty things. She didn't know luxury, and she didn't read books or use magic or any of those things. She was far more comfortable walking barefoot in the cool grass than wearing fancy shoes and walking on plush carpets.
"Thank you," Dawn said, still blushing. "But I hadn't seen you in town before the other day. Where do you live? Is it close by here?"

For a moment, Elijah paused. He didn't want to just tell her he sometimes lived in a cave or made some kind of shelter for himself if he moved. "It's sort of close," he said with a shrug. "I, uh, I live out in the woods actually. It's a lot less people out there so you don't have to worry 'bout crowds or anythin' like that." That wasn't a lie. He did prefer to live away from crowds of people if he could. Most of the time it just seemed better that way. He could do whatever it was he pleased and when the full moon rose, he wouldn't have to worry about sneaking off somewhere.
"What about you?"

Dawn smiled. Maybe other girls would have thought it strange that he lived in the woods, but of course, Dawn had once lived in the woods as well. Gretchen's pack usually camped in tents or in caves, and they had moved around a lot. They did go into the towns on occasion, but they had always made her stay behind because she wasn't well enough.
"I love the woods," she said. "It's quiet and shady, and I like the way the light plays through the trees. I live with my friend Rochelle now, and her boyfriend Sully. It's just a small house here in Hogsmeade, but it's close to the woods, so I like it."

A vision of Dawn walking into the woods on a full moon made Elijah slightly shutter. It was hard to think of someone like her going through that. "The woods are a nice place to go sometimes. Although, other times it's not that great of a place to go. Just be careful when you go into the woods, don't wander too far in. There are things in there that's not that friendly." Elijah knew she would be care and that she probably knew the dangers, but he felt like he needed to say it.
"It feels like home to me. I've lived there for a long time. It's been awhile since I've lived in a village, or town. I, I'm not that great around people."

Dawn knew the dangers of the woods all too well, of course. Although the memory was still a little hazy, she remembered how she and Ashura had wandered too far into the woods that night and wound up getting bitten by Buck. Ashura, the stronger of the two of them, had been strong enough to get away and to keep from being caught by humans or by Buck. But Dawn had been badly injured and scared and wound up in the hospital. Everyone had always blamed her illness on the hospital staff, but it was really Buck who had caused her illness with his botched memory charms. So Dawn had learned that sometimes the greatest dangers in life weren't the hidden ones, but the ones right in front of your eyes.
It occurred to her that maybe she should be wary of this man. He was a stranger, and in the past, strangers had not always been good to her. But on the other hand, Zander's pack had taken her in when she'd wandered too far away from Gretchen's pack, and they had taken better care of her than anyone else ever had. That had taught her something else--that there were good people out there. The way she could tell was in their eyes... and Elijah had such kindness in his eyes. There was an intensity, too, which she didn't understand, but was instinctively drawn to.
"Don't worry, I'm careful," she said. "I don't go into the woods much anymore. There are some people there I don't want to see again. But now that I know you're there, I won't be so afraid."

Elijah did pick up on a clue she gave, however, he wasn't sure what to make of it. She liked the woods and went out there from time to time. Of course she would run into a few people, but then again no one else really lived in the woods. He knew of a pack of werewolves that had been passing through, but that was it. Elijah made sure to steer clear of them, but also keep an eye on them just in case. Now that time had passed, he felt like there was no threat.
Elijah smiled. "Well, maybe if you're lucky I'll show you were I like to stay one day." He didn't realize what he said until the words slipped out of his mouth. Now he was going to have to make some sort of house. Maybe Dylan would help him build a cabin.

Dawn blushed at the thought of visiting his home. She had no idea, of course, that he wasn't actually talking about a house, or that he might just live in the woods. If she had, however, it wouldn't have bothered her. It wasn't very long ago when she had been basically living in tents and caves with Gretchen's pack and she wasn't especially used to anything too luxurious. The idea of indoor plumbing had taken her quite a bit of time to wrap her head around.
"I'd like that," she said. "And I could maybe introduce you to my friend Rochelle and her boyfriend Sully. They're going to get married soon, I think... I don't know if they'll still want me to stay with them if they do. But they're both really nice... I'm sure they'll like you."

"If, if you need somewhere to stay, just let me know." Elijah could not stop the words before they came out of his mouth. He had no idea what possessed him to say those words. He always lived on his own, survived on his own. He never had anyone else to take care of, although he was fairly sure that Dawn could care for herself. Elijah didn't want her to have to live in caves or just out in the woods. She deserved better than that. She deserved better than him, but he couldn't stay away from her. Elijah couldn't explain how she made him turn from an almost wild man to a somewhat tame one. He didn't understand it and he wasn't exactly sure how much he liked it.
"And I would like to meet them." Again, what was he thinking? Elijah knew now a grand total of three other people. That was a lot more than what he used to know. Sure, there were a few people he talked to, but he didn't count them since it was usually just business.
If Dylan paid any attention to him right now, Elijah knew he would never live it down. Thankfully, Dylan was already preoccupied. "I, I'm not that great around people. I honestly know only about three now. There are some I speak to for work, but that's it." At the end of his sentence, Elijah looked away from Dawn's eyes. He didn't know what she would think of him since he didn't know many people.

Dawn found herself blushing. She couldn't imagine the idea of staying with Elijah. She would probably be bright red the entire time. It was kind of him to offer, however, and she found herself smiling.
"You are very kind," she said softly. "But I don't think that Rochelle and Sully will make me leave unless I want to. Rochelle... she promised she would be there for me as long as I needed her. And Sully is a good man. I think they would both like you."
If she was aware of such human conventions and traditions, Dawn might have been more embarrassed by the idea, which sounded a lot like she was introducing her boyfriend to her parents. But the similarity didn't even occur to her, because Elijah was not her boyfriend and Rochelle and Sully were not her parents. Gretchen was probably closer to being her mother, and Dawn was not about to introduce Elijah to her.
"And actually, I think you're doing just fine talking to me. I'm usually pretty shy myself, but I've been a lot better since I started working here."
