Dylan rolled his eyes. "Yeah, I know I can't get rid of you that easily," he said. "I haven't been able to so far."
It was, however, a strange development that Elijah was actually willing to take steps to help himself and become a little more "civilized." He should have been a little more suspicious about that, but at the moment, it didn't really occur to him. He was too distracted by the fact that they were very close to the edge of the forest now. He could see the sunlight shining through the trees ahead and could hear the hustle and bustle of the town.
"I'll help you," he said at last. "Just come by tomorrow or something."

Although Dawn was getting more used to the town, she still sometimes stayed close to the forest, especially when the streets were busy. Today was one of those days. She was getting a later start than usual, so the streets were filled with shoppers and other people on their way to work. She had some fresh vegetables from her garden, which she was going to bring to Mr. Wang, so they could use them in the cooking today.
As she walked, Dawn found herself thinking about the man she had met recently, Elijah. There was something about him, something familiar and interesting, that she really liked. He might have been rough around the edges, but she felt like they had something in common that she couldn't quite figure out.
Of course, there was also the fact that he was extremely attractive. Dawn had never really noticed that kind of thing before; until she started the treatments with Madam Pomfrey, she had been much too sick to think about such things. But Elijah was very handsome, and she felt strange feelings that she couldn't quite explain whenever she looked at him. She thought she might just get lost looking into his eyes.
Oh, well, it was probably silly to think about him anyway. She'd probably never see him again...

"Aw, well ain't you such a sweetheart?" Elijah grinned. He was aware that they were almost in town. If Elijah would admit it, he was nervous about going into town. He wanted to run into her again. He thought about going to see her at work although he didn't have to work. Elijah though thought that it might be a little awkward especially if Dylan was with him. As they were walking a scent came across his nose as they walked out of the forest. For a moment Elijah felt nervous. He was going to make a smart comment to Dylan but the scent stopped him.
Just as Elijah stopped, Dawn was directly in front of him. "Dawn," he said as she drew close to him.

Dylan was walking just a little behind Elijah at that point, and he didn't see the girl until Elijah came to a stop. In fact, he was about to make a comment to Elijah's crack about him being a sweetheart, and the reply was on the tip of his tongue when he heard Elijah say the name Dawn.
That was when he saw the pretty girl with the dark hair and bright blue eyes standing right in front of Elijah. It didn't take a genius to figure out that there was something going on here, and Dylan couldn't help the grin that spread across his face as he realized it. So he wasn't the only one with a secret.
He stepped forward, so that he was standing close to Elijah. Dylan wasn't normally the type to introduce himself to a girl, but in this instance, he was feeling rather bold. "Hi, I'm Dylan," he said to her, holding his hand out as he had read about in books.

Dawn was confused for a minute, and she blinked at Elijah, not sure whether to believe he was real. She had just been thinking about him in that moment, and it seemed all too convenient that he should show up now, right in front of her. Sometimes her mind was still a bit scrambled, and dreams and memories seemed to float to the surface, blending with reality in confusing ways. It was happening much more infrequently these days, but it was still enough to give her pause.
It wasn't until the second man stepped forward and held out his hand to her that she realized she wasn't dreaming. Elijah was here, he was looking at her, and he was as handsome as she remembered. And he had a friend. Later it would occur to her the significance of his coming out of the woods, but for now, it was enough to realize that he was really here.
"I'm Dawn," she said shyly, shaking the second man's hand, then looking back to Elijah. "Elijah... hi."

Elijah wanted to say something to Dylan for speaking up so quickly, but he couldn't bring himself to say anything. He couldn't believe that now there was actually something, or rather someone, that could stop him in his tracks. Her blue eyes are what amazed him the most. Elijah could tell there was a little sadness or something about her because her eyes said so. He was intrigued by her.
When she turned back to him, Elijah swore his heart rate picked up. There was a smile that spread across his face. "I was just thinking about you," he said but then realized what he said. "I mean I was thinking about coming to visit you to see how you were." There was a little voice in Elijah's mind that told him to just shut up for a moment. "How are you?"

Dawn's face flushed pink when Elijah smiled at her. His smile and those intense eyes of his made her feel warm all over, and she couldn't help but return his smile. No one had ever made her feel the way he did, and it both scared and excited her at the same time.
"I... I was thinking about you, too," she confessed shyly. "I wasn't sure I'd ever see you again, and there you were."
She didn't quite understand that he was just as shy as she was, but she recognized that he was a little uncertain. It probably had to do with his friend being there, not with her. Who would ever be shy of her?
"I'm all right," she replied. "Just taking some fresh vegetables to the restaurant. How are you?"

Dylan was now intrigued. This small, fragile-looking girl, who Dylan had to admit was quite pretty, had the curious ability to reduce Elijah to nervous stammering and awkward babbling. And he was standing close enough to hear the increase in Elijah's heart rate, as well. This was definitely a rare thing. Usually, it was Dylan who was at a loss for words. He was the awkward one... Elijah was the slick, fast-talking type. But not when this girl was around.
He was also able to observe things that the other two could not. Because he was not part of the situation, and didn't feel the same things that they did, Dylan was able to pick up on cues that they were too distracted to see. He recognized the girl's scent, and realized that she was one of them. She lived in the town, and she passed as human most of the time, but she was one of them.
And she liked Elijah, a lot.
Oh, Elijah was not going to live this one down for a while...

It was odd how a woman could make Elijah flustered. Usually he could come back with smooth comments, but with Dawn he was at a loss. It was strange how she could do that to him. Usually he had no problem talking with anyone.
"I can help you carry those," he said automatically reaching out to help her with the vegetables in her arms. Again, Elijah wished that he looked more presentable than he did at the moment.
"I'm alright, I just came to town with Dylan to uh, pick up a few things." Of course he didn't tell her that he wanted to come see her right off. "I ain't in a hurry or anythin' though." Elijah wanted to make sure that she knew he didn't mind helping her. "Are you workin' today?"

Dawn blushed as he reached out to take the vegetables from her arms. Their hands touched, and she felt warmth spread through her. Once again, she found herself mesmerized by his eyes, and she wasn't sure how her knees managed to keep from collapsing beneath her.
"Thank you," she said.
She had already forgotten about the presence of the other man until Elijah mentioned him again. She glanced over in Dylan's direction, and she wondered briefly how they knew each other.
"Yes, I was just on my way to the restaurant," she replied. "If you're sure it's not too much trouble... I wouldn't want to take you out of your way."

"No, it's okay," he answered almost automatically. "It ain't out of the way." There was a light trace of a smile. Usually Elijah felt wild, but at the moment he actually felt a little tame. If Dawn told him to jump, more than likely he was going to ask how high.
"Like I said, I ain't in no hurry." Elijah arranged the vegetables in his arms so that it was easy enough for him to carry. "What sort of plans to ya have for today?"

Dylan was enjoying this a little too much. He had never seen Elijah like this, and it took everything Dylan had not to burst out laughing. For all Elijah's big talk, it just took this pretty, delicate girl to turn him into mush. Maybe Elijah really was going soft.
"We can both walk with you," Dylan spoke up. "Do you need any extra help with those things, Elijah? I could carry some of that for you."
Yes, the polite thing to do would have been to leave them alone, but Dylan didn't want to miss any of this... he was going to tease Elijah about this later. Little did he know that he would soon find himself in the same position.

Iris flipped the sign from "open" to "closed" and sighed as her stomach grumbled again. She usually packed a light lunch, but as her thoughts have been otherwise occupied, she had forgotten for the day. She usually didn't go out anywhere unless it was with Abbey, but today she had decided to try the new chinese restaurant down the walk.
As usual, Iris walked quickly, waving and smiling to those that passed her. She walked mindlessly, not paying attention to where her feet took her. She forgot what it felt like to walk through this small town and already know where you were going. When she was younger, she had this placed memorized. She was so sure that she had forgotten. It pleased her that she could still walk without second guessing herself.
Having thought this, Iris knew that there was a loose stone in the sidewalk and as she looked down to watch for it, she ran into someone. She looked up, letting out a breathless "I'm so sorry!" However, she trailed off, because she was looking a beautiful girl who was walking another man and... Dylan. Dylan was walking with other people? Another girl? Wait..she was actually looking at him. She was thinking about him only moments earlier and here he was.
"Dylan." She gave him a bright smile. "Hi.."

"What sort of plans to ya have for today?" Dawn saw that hint of a smile on his face and thought that she had never seen anything more dazzling. It felt like staring at a solar eclipse... dark and yet brilliant at the same time. She was far too inexperienced to know what any of this meant. She couldn't think it was a bad thing, though. She had been through so much bad in her young life, but never had she known anyone who could make her feel so good with just a smile or a look or a light touch of the hand. "Thank you," she said shyly. "Both of you," she added belatedly, with a fleeting glance at Dylan. She started to lead them toward the restaurant, but suddenly came to a halt when another girl came up and spoke to Elijah's friend. But Dawn couldn't take her eyes off of Elijah.

Dylan didn't even see her coming. He had been so focused on the little drama between Elijah and the girl, Dawn, that he didn't see Iris until she was standing right in front of him, saying his name.
Immediately, he turned the color of a tomato and began to look at the ground. "M-Miss Iris," he said. His tongue felt thick, as though someone had tied it in knots when he wasn't looking. "I... I was on my way to the shop..."
Was that all he could think to say? His mind had gone totally blank. He looked up at her, and for a moment, everything else faded away. Elijah, Dawn, the rest of the town bustling around them... none of it mattered, because Iris was here, looking at him with those eyes of hers.

Elijah half hoped that Dylan would decide to leave. He knew he was going to be teased after they returned to the woods, but at the moment he didn't care. Never before had Elijah felt like this toward a girl before and he wasn't exactly sure what captivated him more about Dawn, the innocence she held or her eyes.
He was brought out of his thoughts as he heard another female voice say Dylan's name. Elijah looked and gave Dylan an almost teasing look. The look said that he was in for it too. He could tell the female was interested in Dylan just the way she said his name. Also the way Dylan looked at her was completely obvious that he also fancied her.
Elijah's gaze didn't linger on the two for long because he could feel Dawn's blue eyes staring at him. He looked to her and smiled as he moved a little closer to her without thinking. Glancing back to Dylan and the new female, Elijah put on a smile. "Sorry we kept him," he spoke up much like Dylan did when they first ran into Dawn.

Iris was almost sure that if she had looked into Dylan's eyes any longer, her heart was going pop right out of her mouth and going bouncing down the sidewalk. "Dylan,"she said softly,"you don't have to keep calling me miss. I would love if you would just call me Iris." She smiled shyly, the heat rising in her cheeks as he watched her. "I was actually on my way to lunch...would you like to join me?"
Iris couldn't help but feel a rush of relief when she saw Dylan's friend move closer to the pretty girl. Although she didn't want to admit it to herself, she was relieved to see that it was Elijah she seemed to fancy and not Dylan. "It's no trouble at all. It would be nice if you join us for lunch. My treat of course." She smiled brightly. "My name is Iris Elliot. Just call me Iris please. Sweet Dylan here is far to formal. It's nice to meet some of his friends."

Dylan was sure he was going to die of embarrassment. He was really going to hear it from Elijah later. Sweet Dylan... He could already hear Elijah calling him that on a regular basis. And yet, knowing that Iris thought he was sweet made Dylan feel warm all the way down to the tips of his toes.
He really didn't want to have lunch with Elijah and the other girl... just Iris. But he didn't know how to back out without sounding rude... and he didn't want Iris to think he was rude. His only hope was that Elijah would choose to back out instead.
"Er... that would be nice, Miss... er... Iris."
It was going to be hard to stop calling her Miss, simply because he felt that she was just so far above him. Yes, she was just a shop owner, but somehow he felt like a lowly serf sitting at the foot of a queen. He didn't deserve the way she looked at him.
Realizing belatedly that he should introduce the others to Iris, he forced himself to look away from her and nod toward Elijah. "This... this is my... er... friend... Elijah," he began haltingly. "And this is his friend... Dawn."

For Dawn, it was actually good that Iris had showed up. Although Dylan seemed nice enough, it was a bit intimidating to deal with bother Elijah and Dylan, especially when she was unable to take her eyes away from Elijah. Now there was another girl here, and it made Dawn feel a lot more comfortable.
"It's nice to meet you, Iris," she said, still a little shy.
"We were actually going to the Chinese restaurant..." she explained to the other girl. "I work there, and I was bringing some extra supplies for the kitchen." She nodded to the vegetables in Elijah's arms. "You can join us, if you want."

It was odd how both Elijah and Dylan fancied girls at the same time. Both of them were fairly shy and stumbled over their words. Of course, Elijah was still going to tease Dylan a little about Iris, but he knew his limits. He was sure that Dylan was going to tease him about Dawn as well.
"Nice to meet you Iris," Elijah repeated after Dawn. He was feeling a little out of place. It wasn't usual for him to constantly meet people. He usually did the same work for the same people, but now he had somewhat of a steady job so he was used to seeing the same people.
"Yes," he said, remembering his manners. Part of him wanted Dylan and Iris to go off on their own, mainly so that Dylan couldn't find anything else to tease him about, but also because he wanted to spend time with Dawn alone. "You can come too. We don't mind."
