It wasn't a date. Duncan always had to remind himself of that fact every time he planned to meet with Lorelei. Of course, to him, it was a date... but he knew that Lorelei didn't think of it as one. She didn't think of him that way, and he was starting to become resigned to the idea. Surely if she was going to one day wake up and realize what a handsome charmer he really was, she would have done so by now, right?
Of course, he could have just come right out and told her how he felt about her. But he'd waited so long to do it that now it would probably just be awkward. Maybe there was a stage at which it was too late to become more than friends.
Oh, well. He had to try not to think about it.... when he was with Lorelei, he just wanted to focus on her and not make things uncomfortable.
So he got dressed in his best jumper and a clean pair of jeans and headed over to Cheesburger Paradise to meet Lorelei for some burgers.

Lorelei still wasn't used to her telephone. Every time it rang, she'd yell and, for a moment, be very confused before she realized it was just Duncan getting in touch with her. She'd always have to take a deep breath and make it sound like she wasn't just scared half to death by the sudden noise.
This afternoon was no different. She couldn't help but notice her cursing the telephone stopped as soon as she heard Duncan's voice. Merlin, if her friends had found that out... After getting off of the phone, she ran to her room to get ready. She finally settled on her favorite t-shirt and cardigan with the jeans she had been wearing earlier. She felt it was warm enough to wear her favorite summer dress, but thought that would make her overdressed for a meeting with a friend. That dress she would save for another time.
"Duncan!" She said cheerfully, approaching her friend. "I didn't keep you waiting long, did I? I just had to put my paperwork back so not to loose it down the sides of my couch." Lorelei explained, hoping she hadn't been late. She was used to being the first one to any meeting, be it work or with friends.

Duncan broke into a wide smile at the sight of her. Getting to his feet, he gave her a quick hug (hey, he'd take whatever he could get) and waited for her to sit on the other end of the booth before he sat down himself.
Gosh, she was so pretty. It was no wonder that she only thought of him as a friend. She was totally out of his league. He was lucky she even talked to him.
"No, I wasn't waiting too long," he assured her. "I just needed a break from studying. I have a big physiology test this week... I'm really nervous about it."

Lorelei hugged him back and smiled at him as they pulled away. She sat and tucked her hair behind her ears as he sat across from her. She loved this place, but only went with Duncan. She thought about introducing it to her friends, but she liked the thought of it being her 'special place' with Duncan. One of many, if Lorelei thought about all of the places in muggle London they went together.
"Ah, there's no need to be nervous! Smart guy like you, I'm sure you'll do just fine on it." Lorelei assured him with a grin. She meant it; sometimes she would take a book of his he needed for school and flip through it, and nothing would make sense to her.
"Honestly, I don't know how you do it. It's...confusing." She laughed a bit, shaking her head.

Duncan blushed and looked down at the table. He didn't feel like he was much smarter than anyone else, and certainly not smarter than she was. She could do something he couldn't... she knew about magic, which was something she could only dream about.
"It's not that complicated, really," he said. "You could probably do it if you tried. You can do magic... I'm sure you know about things that are completely confusing to me."

Lorelei chuckled; there was no way she could learn anything he knew! Not unless she had spent years studying it, and even then she was sure there would still be things that would confuse her. She then thought about how he was studying medicine, and that he would be dealing with sick and injured people. Lorelei could barely deal with cutting herself, let alone seeing someone else bleeding. She had to admire Duncan for his ability to do that.
"Well, you'd have to teach me all of it. I doubt I could make sense of it reading it on my own." She said. She wouldn't mind learning the basics, but she had her own muggle studies to keep up on. It seemed she learned something new every day about them, which kept her life exciting.
Lorelei shrugged when he mentioned her magic. She didn't think it was anything special, since she had grown up surrounded by it in her home, and then at Hogwarts. "I could probably explain the things I can do and you would still be confused! Trust me, it took me a while to get the hang of some things. I could always show you some really cool things, though, if you promise not to tell." Lorelei said with a wink. She knew she shouldn't be showing him things, but she didn't see the harm in it. After all, he did see her flower trick when she was a kid. Sure, she didn't know what she was doing at the time, but Lorelei didn't want to pretend this part of her life didn't exist when she was around Duncan. She wouldn't admit it, but she was afraid he wouldn't like her any more if she didn't have her magic.

Duncan had often thought that her magic might work well with his medical knowledge. As he understood it, wizards had different types of medical treatments that were not available to muggles like himself. They had potions and spells that he would never be able to learn. And even though he wasn't really supposed to know about magic, sometimes he wished he could learn it, at least enough to be able to use those treatments. It didn't seem quite fair that muggles were not able to receive the best treatment simply because they had no access to magic.
But Lorelei didn't know much about magical healing techniques, and he didn't feel right about pushing the issue. It was just sort of a wish of his... if he had magic, he could heal just about anyone, right?
"I would never tell anyone about your secret," he said honestly. "I always loved when you did little bits of magic in front of me... especially that flower trick."

Lorelei smiled. She knew Duncan would never tell anyone about her magic; she would probably never speak to him again if he did (no matter how childish that seemed) since most of her community would shun her, most likely. Besides, then the magical law would get involved, knowing Lorelei had done magic in front of a muggle... she was honestly surprised she hadn't been caught with doing so yet.
"The flowers are blooming again. We could always go somewhere, just the two of us, and I can do the flower trick again." Lorelei said with a smile. That was always their little secret, something Lorelei thought about a lot. She was truly grateful Duncan didn't go running away like the other kids did when they saw it.
"I could also show you some other things, if you want. I can change their colors, if I wanted to. Like, make them really unnatural colors. Thank Merlin I live in a magical apartment and no one questions the oddly colored flowers in my window!" Lorelei laughed. "But it doesn't have to be now. I forgot about your test." She added, getting quieter. She wanted to spend the whole day with him, but was uncertain if he had that much time since she didn't know how long studying would take. Suddenly, Lorelei wished they were teenagers again on summer break, able to spend as much time around each other as they wanted.

Duncan was always afraid that she was going to get into trouble for telling him about magic or for performing magic in his presence. From what he understood, it was frowned upon to talk freely about magic or do magic in front of "muggles" like him. He had laughed when he learned that he was a "muggle," because he had never heard such a term before and he thought it sounded funny. Maybe it was bad that he knew so much about the wizarding world, but he also knew that he would never tell a soul about it and betray Lorelei's trust in him. He was proud to keep her secret for her.
"What's your apartment like?" he asked curiously. "Does it do magical things on its own or is it just like a regular apartment... except that other witches and wizards live there? I'd love to see it sometime, but not if I'm not allowed."
