"Yeah, Lydia," Sean confirmed her name, knowing there was no hope of getting his brother to let up, especially when Daniel pointed out his smile, making him blush a bit and smile more. Then, as though realizing hr was acting like a girl, he rolled his eyes and looked pointedly at Victoria, a silent warning to his brother that he could fire right back.
And then, in all seriousness, he said, "I like her, Dan." He shrugged, reminding himself not to let her get too attached. And in a few days, he would ask his brother to keep an eye on her for him. Just in case. "Anyway, get out of here and tomorrow we can go play cops and robbers."

"Ah, good," Daniel said with a grin and clapping his hands together. "I'm glad that you admit to that out loud." Of course he knew that Sean would fire back with everything he had if Daniel pushed him a little harder about Lydia. It was good to see Sean be a little flustered. He was proud of his brother for finally finding a girl that could do that to him.
"Hopefully I can talk them into letting me go before lunchtime tomorrow and we can plan everything out, or we can just do like we normally do and plan it out as we go along." Nine times out of ten the brothers never really had a plan. They had a goal in mind but how they were actually going to get there was hardly known. Thinking on their feet was something they were good at.

Sean let out a laugh that sounded rather unexpected. "Plan it out... Right. When have we ever gone into something with a solid plan of action?" He glanced at Victoria. "Never. It never happens. But we make a good team, so..."
He wondered briefly if they had Victoria shadowing Daniel as a replacement for him- if, for some reason, they wanted to split the brothers up. He couldn't think of a reason why, but he wasn't complaining, either. He and Victoria seemed to play well off each other, which meant they'd make a good team, too.
"Right. Well, I'll come check on you tomorrow and we'll go from there. Try not to give Ludia a hard time, okay?" He stood up and smiled at Victoria. "Good seeing you again. "

Victoria looked back and forth between the two brothers as they bantered back and forth. She especially caught the bit about some girl named Lydia, who apparently was involved with Sean in some way, and she noticed the pointed look that Sean aimed in her direction. It made her blush, but she wisely held her tongue. This was a brother thing, and she didn't dare interrupt. Maybe later, after Sean had left, she would gently try to persuade Dan to take it easy on Sean... after all, she could only imagine what they'd be saying about her if she hadn't been sitting right there in the room.
And Victoria wasn't even sure what this thing between her and Dan was. Yes, there was chemistry, and she couldn't deny that she was attracted to him. But maybe Dan was like that with all the girls. No, she didn't want to assume that she meant anything more to him than just another flirtation.
"Good seeing you again, Sean. And thanks for letting me help you with this case... I just hope you find that little girl soon."

"Yeah, me too," Sean replied. If anything happened to Danica, he would never forgive himself. But at least now, he didn't feel like he had to find her before everything shook out.... Victoria and his brother could take the case over. He glanced again and Daniel, wondering how many more times he might get to see his brother before he had got say goodbye. He tried not to be so tragic, but he could feel it getting closer, and it was hard not to think about.
"Thanks again for goings over that file for me." With that, Sean was gone.

After Sean had left the room, Victoria turned to Daniel, her expression serious. The two brothers really couldn't be more different. Dan was tough and brash and full of swagger. He didn't seem to take anything seriously, and yet, Victoria had already figured out that he was very good at his job. But Sean... there was an aura of tragedy hanging over him. It was as though he were carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders, and it was slowly suffocating him. Yes, he still joked around and teased his older brother, but still... There was something not right there. She didn't know him nearly as well as Daniel did, and even she was worried about him.
"Is he always like that?" she asked, nodding toward the door. "It's like he's getting ready to go off to war or something."

Daniel just nodded to Sean as he left. There wasn't a whole lot to say before his brother just left. He wanted a few moments before answering Victoria's question. "Yes," he finally answered after a long pause. There was seriousness to his voice. "As of late he has been more so like that than usual. Something is going on, but he won't tell me what. I go along with him and pretend that things are okay, but there is something there. He just won't mention what it is." Of course, there was a lot to do with Sean having visions, but he wasn't going to mention that to Victoria.
He stared a long moment in the place where Sean had occupied. Daniel had to get it out of his brother one way or another. He didn't want to argue with him, but if that was what it was going to take to figure it out, then that was what was going to have to happen.
Looking to Victoria, he rubbed one eye. "I'm worried about him," he admitted. It was obvious that Sean took the weight of the world on his shoulders, but so did Daniel. Daniel just dealt with it in a different way.
Feeling like the subject needed to be changed, he gave a light smile. "Thanks for helping out on the case. You know sweetheart, you've been helpful on two different cases. You might very well do pretty well."

Seeing him worry about his brother like that did something to Victoria. She already couldn't deny that she liked Daniel a lot, but seeing a hint of his serious, more sensitive side brought her feelings to another level. Although she tried not to think too much about where this little flirtation was going, at moments like this, she couldn't help but wonder if she might be on the verge of falling for him.
Forcing these dangerous thoughts out of her mind, she smiled softly at him. "You're a good brother," she said. "Especially since he should probably be the one worried about you... after all, you are in the hospital and he's not."
But he seemed fine and she fully expected that he'd be released soon and he would be back at work. Which would only mean that she'd probably end up spending more time with him... giving her another chance to figure out what exactly was going on between them.
"You don't need to sound so surprised, you know," she teased. "I passed the training program, so obviously I must have some skills..."

"I'm not really surprised," he started with a light smirk. "After all, you haven't slapped me yet after completely inappropriate comments have been made, and you have dealt with me for awhile now and you keep coming back." Daniel liked for moments to be light and fun rather than serious. He could be serious when he needed to, but for now he was going to save that for work.
"Of course, that could mean that you really do have a crush on me. I mean, I couldn't blame you. I am rather charming after all." He cracked a grin. "As for these skills of yours, we'll find those out soon." Daniel gave her a wink. "Of course that could be taken in both ways, so you can take it however you like."

Victoria's mouth dropped open and she stared at him in mock outrage. "Oh! Well, someone certainly thinks highly of himself!" she said, tossing her hair over her shoulder in an exaggerated manner. "I'm sure you think every woman is madly in love with you. In fact, I think I may swoon from the mere power of your presence!"
With that, she put her hand on her forehead and threw her head back in a melodramatic pose, like a silent-movie actress, then, after a beat, looked back at him, rolling her eyes. "Please. Just because I brought you cheese fries doesn't mean I have a crush on you. And don't forget, I'm totally going to beat you in our sparring match. Then you'll see what kind of skills I have."

He was highly entertained with the situation at hand. "Oh, but you still have yet to fully deny anything I have just stated, sweetheart." Daniel gave her a wink. Of course right now Daniel was a little more nervous than he would ever admit. His continued act of messing with her was one of his defenses.
"Ah, I don't think every woman is madly in love with me. I know that's not true. As for you swooning, go right ahead." He was glad that his brother left the room. Sean would tease him until Kingdom Come if he was still there. "I'm going to keep in mind that you think you're going to beat me. Although, you have to keep in mind sweetheart that no matter how this sparring match goes, you still have to deal with me. We are going to dinner no matter what."

Victoria rolled her eyes at him. She was enjoying their little flirtation just a little too much again. It was funny how he could be simultaneously infuriating and charming.... she wasn't sure whether she wanted to slap him or kiss him... or both. But in the end she did neither.
"Having dinner with you might just be my biggest challenge yet," she declared. "I mean, I'll have to find a way to keep you on your best behavior in a public restaurant. You'll probably spend half the time flirting with the waitress, and I'll have to take you home just to keep you out of trouble."

"Oh, already thinking about taking me home?" Daniel raised his eyebrows. "I would say you haven't bought me dinner yet, but then again I suppose you already have," he continued as a smirk appeared on his face. "However, we haven't gone out yet, so I don't know if I can already agree to that. I'm not that kind of guy." He winked at her.
"As for this business about having to watch me, I might have to watch you. You might not be as innocent as you seem. It's that type of person you have to watch out for." Daniel liked teasing with her. "And I would never flirt with another woman if I'm already out with one."

"If I took you home, it would only be to keep you out of trouble," Victoria replied, giving him a stern look. "I wouldn't want you to drink too much after you lose to me in our fight. I can just imagine how embarrassed you'd be if you had to admit that you lost to a girl."
Victoria decided not to comment on whether she was "innocent" or not, because she wasn't exactly innocent. She wasn't ashamed of this, and she didn't think Daniel would have a problem with it, either, but she wasn't going to admit it to him just now.
"But it's good to know that you have some scruples. I don't like competing with other girls for attention."

Daniel mocked her stern look. "Oh, but if you took me home, you would be the one getting into trouble. Taking a drunken man home, wanting to take advantage of me. Shame on you Blondie." The stern look failed and there was the hint of the usual smirk. "I'm also touched that you care about my embarrassment. However, I assure you I will not be embarrassed because it will be you who will be embarrassed because you lost to me after all this talk. You are really good at that, talking. I haven't seen any action yet."
He was half expecting her to make a comment about him calling her innocent. It amused him that she didn't even bother commenting on it.
"Of course I have some scruples. If I didn't my mother would come after me with a belt." Daniel let out a laugh. He did get the belt a few times when he was younger, but he usually learned his lesson, or he learned how not to get caught again.

Victoria couldn't take it any longer. That cute smirk of his was making her knees feel weak, and all this banter was starting to feel like foreplay. In the back of her mind, she knew that this probably wasn't wise or professional, but... oh, the hell with it. She had never been wise and hadn't been working on the job long enough to be professional. And she was not the kind of girl to just keep playing coy and pretend she didn't know what was going on. She wasn't innocent, after all, and she had never held herself back from going after what she wanted.
"Oh, you want to see some action, do you?" she teased, her smile widening even as her eyes narrowed. "Well, I guess I'll just have to put my money where my mouth is. Or maybe vice-versa..."
And with that, she leaned forward, cupping each side of his face in her hands, and kissed him soundly.
"How's that for action?" she asked when she pulled away, slightly breathless.

What happened next, not even Daniel was expecting. He honestly just expected Victoria to blush and hide behind her hair. Oh thank goodness Sean was no where near them. Never being one that never had anything to say, Daniel raised an eyebrow. Maybe he met his match when it came to this, but he wasn't going to admit that out loud.
He should have known from the smile of hers something was about to happen, but he didn't even think about it.
After she pulled away, Daniel knew he had to think of something to say. He wasn't going to let her know that she caught him by complete surprise. He ran his tongue over his lips. "Well, that tasted kinda cheesy." He let a lopsided grin show. "And you know, that whole innocent thing of yours, definitely not innocent at all." Not once had there really been a girl that could confuse Daniel, nor take him by complete surprise until Victoria. He wasn't exactly sure what to do.

He might not have admitted that she had taken him by surprise, but Victoria could tell that she had. It was just what she'd hoped she would do. Maybe in the past, he'd flirted with more innocent girls or with easy girls who feel right into his arms. Victoria was not like those other girls, and she wanted to make sure he knew it. She liked him, and she wasn't going to pretend that she wasn't interested... but she wasn't necessarily going to make it easy for him, either. She was not afraid to make the first move... But that didn't mean that she was just giving up, either. It just meant that the next move was his.
"Cheesy? Well, I'll take that as a compliment," she replied with a smile. "After all, cheese really is the food of the gods. I think."
Abruptly, she got to her feet, gathering the remains of the burgers and fries and stuffing them into the bag to take out to the trash. "Well, I think I should get going. After all, you're still recovering and I'm sure you need to rest up so you're ready for our sparring match."
She took another drink from her unfinished milkshake, keeping her eyes fixed on him as she did. "See you soon," she said at last. She turned and walked to the door, opened it, and looked back over her shoulder at him with a mischievous look on her face.
"And I never said I was innocent," she said.
Then she was gone, leaving him to stare at the door as it swung closed.

Daniel was going to tell Victoria that she didn't have to leave but then he had an idea of the game she was playing. It was the same exact game he played. Two could play it.
"Oh, so someone is still overly confident that she was going to beat me. Sweetheart, I don't need to rest to take you." The words just slipped out without him thinking. Daniel raised an eyebrow as she walked to the door. The mischievous look told him what he needed to know. She was playing the game. Well if she wanted to play, Daniel would bring it.
After she left he shook his head as he laid down. He didn't really have any idea what he was getting himself into. No girl had played back in the way she did. Usually they would just give up, or just slap him and go away. This one, she didn't do either. Daniel smiled and let out a small chuckle as he thought about the look on her face as she left.
