It had gotten easier after their first awkward dinner together, by the end of the night Edward was more like himself the gracious host he had been raised to be. This was his family, his whole family and he was a very blessed man. After that he had invited Jarred to stop by at any time, and occasionally sent him letters, still Edward wanted more, he wanted to know his son.
Today they'd be having lunch. Samantha was coming home later in the day and he hoped to persuade Jarred to stay for dinner, well he hoped to do more than that.
When the house elf let Edward know that Jarred had arrived he moved their lunch to the terrace seeing as how even in winter it was actually a beautiful and rather pleasant day.

Jarred was nervous, still. The dinner the other night had been great... a little overwhelming because there were so many people, he hadn't really gotten to know anyone outside of Sam. And she was bright, engaging, beautiful. It was hard to believe he was related to her.
He was so used to the small little family he had grown up in that he couldn't be blamed for feeling so overwhelmed. Evie had done marvelously, though, letting every person in the room love and dote upon her.
But he wasn't entirely sure that he was less nervous now, knowing that this would be a more intimate setting... just him and Edward, if he read the owl correctly. He considered asking someone to watch his daughter, but then thought better of it. Edward probably wanted to see his granddaughter, too.
So he stood in the lunch area, almost properly and stiffly, with his daughter in his arms, just waiting.

"Jarred come on in have a seat." Edward said a little better at pretending ease than his son was though he was just as nervous. There was already a bowl of Cheerios for Evie, Edward didn't know what they were either til he saw them and at that point had an entire pantry full of boxes. "I didn't know what you wanted but Pierre can make anything you like."

Jarred just gave him a look, and then quickly shook his head. A smile even graced his lips. "Really, I'll eat anything." Even if he might have been too nervous to eat much, right now. He wasn't going to put anyone in this household out. "I've been raised on corned beef, after all. Anything else may as well be gourmet."
Evie made her "grabby hands," and Jarred sat at the table, pulling the bowl of cereal towards her. "I should apologize now... more of these are going to end up on your floor than in her mouth."

Edward nodded then wrote on a letter their order which zipped past them magically and flew to the kitchens where Pierre was waiting to cook.
"She's more than welcome to make all the mess she likes...to be honest it's refreshing to have a little one around." Edward wasn't there much for Samantha growing up and he missed it. He missed both of his children growing up and that suddenly saddened and angered him at the same time.
"Look Jarred...I don't want to bombard you with questions, and please tell me if it's too much or you feel overwhelmed...I just have to be honest when I say that I want to know everything there is to know...where you grew up, were you happy, I want to know what your life was like...I want to know about your parents and Evie...and I want to answer any questions you might have as well...I don't mind waiting or taking it slow until you trust me and trust this family to be your own, because it is. We are your family and I want to do everything in my power to make you feel welcome here. I also want you to know that...had I known... " he stopped himself short, he should have known. Somehow, someway he should have known that Jarred existed...
"I'm sorry I wasn't there for you growing up."
