This was ridiculous. Stupid and ridiculous and why wasn't some lousy prefect doing this?
Yes, Chance was brooding. There was a reason, of course, that he was Head Boy, and he usually took this seriously, contrary to popular belief. But right now, the very last thing he wanted to be doing was patrolling the halls for students who were breaking curfew. Like Ilsa Richmond, for instance. He'd caught her sneaking in from the secret passage to Hogsmeade. She was lucky she was a Slytherin, and fun at that, or he could have gotten her in heaps of trouble.
But no, instead, he sent her off to the party that he was unable to attend because he was on patrol. Their champion just won a challenge, the ball was over, and he wasn't celebrating.
And then it happened... he saw her, and cursed under his breath.

"Right...cause running into you is the highlight of my evening." she bit out caustically in retaliation for his curse. She raised a brow at him as if to challenge him. She really didn't know why she pushed his buttons, perhaps it was because he was an ass hat to her either way, and at least if she took the offensive she'd deserve the mean things he did, ignoring him just seemed like she was letting him walk all over her, and she wouldn't allow that.
"By the way thank you so much for your help earlier with the ball...really Chance I don't know how I would have done it all without you...I can't imagine how taxing it must be all that slacking off you do." she rolled her eyes at him. He wasn't worth it, she should have turned around and left him alone, but it seemed that whenever they were in the same room, sparks would fly.

"Highlight or not, you don't have to start a conversation with me," the Slytherin boy retorted. He had come to the conclusion, long ago, that she just liked picking fights with him. No matter, he had the upper hand simply by being a guy, and the things he said affected her worse than they did him.
"Oh, right, because everyone was so ill behaved at the ball with every professor and the Headmaster present. I don't know how you managed to single handedly keep everyone in line. Get over yourself, princess."

She was referring to assisting with the decor and general set up of the event itself, but damn him if she was going to let him know that. He already goaded her and got under her skin fromt he things he had said the other day that it didn't matter what he said now it was too late she had no mercy where he was concerned.
"Right, because I'm the high handed one with a stick up my...whatever. If I walk around with my head high at least it's because of the things I've done in life, my accomplishments, not because mommy and daddy decided to have inbred children to keep the line pure."

Chance took a breath, letting it rush from his body through his nose as he crossed his arms over his chest. The whole affect was one of strong disapproval, maybe even disdain. And he had to work on it, but there was an annoyed, couldn't give a steaming pile of dragon dung look in his eyes.
"You done?" he asked, refusing to rise to her bait. He always did. It started when he was young, and long before she came along. It was easier not to get heated about this, because his family life frustrated the hell out of him. He may have even envied her, on some level, though that didn't make it okay that she as a mudblood.
He snorted. "Your accomplishments? When you bring peace to the wizarding community, or cure polio or something, come talk to me. Until then, shove off."

If she took a moment to listen to herself she would hate the way she sounded when she talked to him, but she really couldn't help it because he grated her nerves so. She wasn't sure how to do anything but be caustic to him.
The way he looked at her though momentarily set her back, that look of disdain she could feel almost to her toes, and for the smallest moment she shrank away from him and apology came to her lips, until he told her to shove off, then her features hardened.
"If curing polio and bringing peace meant coming to talk to you then not enough good will in this world could bring me to that great of a sacrifice." she sighed then rolled her eyes. "Look it's late and we have a lot of rounds to make, so as charming as this little interlude has been..I think we're done here."
