What Alana didn't understand was that if it wasn't the Kryshna case on his mind, it would be some other case, or he would find something else to worry about. It would take a lot of patience to get him to truly relax or to think about anything other than work.
However, this happened to be one of those rare moments where work was not the main thing on his mind. Right now, his full attention was focused on her. She appeared to be doing rather well, considering, but he was a pessimist by nature, and was always expecting things to go wrong. It was useful for his job, because he could think of the different possibilities in a situation and make sure all bases were covered. But on a personal level, this tendency of his just increased his stress level.
"I'll figure out what to do about Kryshna later," he promised. "Right now, I just want you to rest and concentrate on getting better."

Alana smiled at him. Even if she wasn't fully convinced Rutger really would focus on Kryshna later, she appreciated that he wasn't going to leave her side now. She thought that as long as he was quiet about Kryshna, she would be happy. The last thing she wanted to hear about now, while she was still in pain from the attack, was all about Kryshna.
"And when you do focus on her," Alana started, giving his hand a gentle squeeze. "I will hopefully be out of this bed and right beside you to decide what to do with her. After we get answers, of course." Alana's first thought was to put the monster to death, but she knew that was just her anger and fear at almost dying speaking up. Alana normally didn't look for revenge, but she thought she could justify it since she was close to dying.
"Believe me, all I want is to get better. Being able to move without feeling sick would be nice. Remind me to never take that for advantage." Alana said with a laugh. If laughter was the best medicine, as her aunt always told her while growing up, it sure wasn't helping now. She was getting tired, but she didn't want to go to sleep. She was afraid that if she did, Rutger would leave to think on the case some more. "Will you stay with me today? If I do not sound so much like a child at this moment." She paused to give a small, uneasy laugh. "I just... I don't want to be alone."

Rutger's heart gave an unfamiliar sort of lurch as she looked up at him like that. He felt the completely illogical need to take her into his arms and hold her close, as if he could somehow protect her from the poison still inside her. He didn't, though, and instead merely squeezed her hand.
"I will stay with you as long as you need me," he replied, fully aware of just how irresponsible this was, but not how romantic he sounded. Yes, Alana needed him, but so did Daniel and Sean and Angelique and... as much as he hated to think it, Kryshna needed him, too. Or rather, he needed to check on her, at any rate. And of course, he needed sleep... or at least a very large cup of coffee. But as long as Alana needed him, he did not intend to abandon her.
"You should sleep. I'll be right here."

Alana smiled as Rutger spoke. She knew he wasn’t thinking of it in a romantic way, or it at least wasn’t supposed to be meant that way, but Alana couldn’t help but pretend it was meant that way. She wanted to tell him he better get used to being around her if that was the case, but she didn’t want to make things awkward between the two of them. She was too tired and hurting too much to think of any kind of jokes to get her out of the situation.
“If I sleep, would you stay here and sleep, too? Or at least go back to the hotel to try and get some sleep? I guess I would be okay alone if I’m not awake to know it.” Alana hadn’t realized how tired she was until Rutger mentioned sleep.
“I’ll try to sleep. Just promise me you’ll do the same?” Alana asked with a gentle smile. She worried about him too much sometimes, but she had stopped caring about that a while ago. She just wanted to make sure he would be okay.

Rutger couldn't deny that he was tired. Actually, he was exhausted. The little bits of sleep he'd managed to get during the night had hardly been restful, and even he had to admit that it would feel good to lie down on an actual bed. Maybe one of the healers would be able to give him a peace draught so that he could actually sleep for a few solid hours.
"I promise I will try," he said, smiling faintly. But he also knew that if he left Alana's side, he would have to at least take a few moments to check on the others first. He felt responsible for all of them--for Sean and Daniel, and even for Kryshna. And since it seemed that Alana was going to be all right (although the tiny, pessimistic voice in his head wouldn't quite be silenced), he probably should take the opportunity to check on the situation, even if for just a minute or two. But he didn't need to tell Alana that. The important thing would be that he would keep his promise of trying to sleep.
