After her most recent conversation with Milo, Ricki decided that she was simply going to have to accept that nothing was ever going to happen between the two of them. It had been a painful realization, but Ricki was determined not to dwell on the disappointment. Milo would always be in her life; he was her best friend. Unfortunately, that was all he would ever be. She had to face it.
After a night of mourning, which featured a big bowl of rocky road ice cream, a couple of sappy movies, and a good cry, Ricki decided it was time to move on with her life.
She'd dated other men before. Quite a few of them, in fact. But after her disastrous marriage, she had never gotten serious with any of them. She'd never dated a man more than twice, and had always been certain that the only man who could possibly tempt her into a real relationship was Milo.
But that dream was never going to happen, and it was time to give other men a chance again. So she owled a man she had met a few weeks ago at Spellbound and invited him to meet her for drinks at Ambrosia.
She was sitting at the bar, listening to the piano music playing in the background as she sipped a martini and waited for Edward to arrive.

Heartbreak seemed to be common with the people Edward talked to in the past month. His friend Henry's wife left him for a man she worked with, and Janet's boyfriend took off without warning. It reminded Edward of his girlfriend Violet, the one he spent six years with and planned on marrying, who had just up and left him, only to tell him a year later she was marrying a man in America.
He had spent enough time at his mother's house trying to convince her to move in with him, since his house was too big for just him, but she refused. She liked still being independent, as she said, and she was hoping Edward would meet someone new. He had a few weeks after that talk with his mother, a beautiful blonde at Spellbound he gave his address to, but hadn't heard anything since that night.
Needless to say, he was pleasantly surprised when he received an owl from her asking him to meet her for drinks. He happily wrote back that he would, and picked out the best outfit he could find to meet her.
"Ricki?" He asked cautiously, walking up to a blonde woman, hoping it was her. He had only seen her once and his memory was a little fuzzy from that night, but as he walked closer and sat down, he knew it was her.

Ricki was glad she had chosen Ambrosia for this meeting. No, date. Right? Drinks counted as a date, didn't it? Well, maybe not at the Leaky Cauldron, but at a place like this... this was a date sort of place. Besides the bar, there were dozens of cozy little tables throughout the room. The lighting was just right--bright enough to actually see who you were talking to and dark enough to be romantic. And the piano music was soothing; just enough to provide a background noise, but not interfere with conversations.
Ricki just hoped she'd remember Edward when she saw him. He'd been very handsome, she knew that. And very tall. She was pretty sure she'd be able to recognize him.
She was just taking a drink from her martini when she heard a voice say her name. She turned around to face him, and was pleased to see that he was just as handsome--maybe even more--as she remembered. "Edward," she greeted him. "It's good to see you again."

Edward smiled as he got comfortable in his seat. He ordered a drink as the bartender looked in his direction. He often frequented bars when he wasn't working on an article. He started doing so after his girlfriend left, but he found his limit quickly and never drank too much. Or, at least he tried not to. He found himself regretting some nights, usually when he was done spending time with friends.
Ricki was just as beautiful as Edward recalled she was the other night. He had a drink or two past his limit and he was afraid she wouldn't be what he recalled, but he was glad she was. Otherwise, this might be an awkward evening. Edward wasn't picky, he would always choose a woman who he could joke and have fun with, but someone pleasing to the eye would also be nice to have.
"I was happy when I received your owl," he said before taking a sip from his drink. "I hope you've been well these past couple of weeks. I was starting to think you lost my address." he said with a light laugh.

Ricki felt a stab of guilt at his comment. No, she hadn't lost his address, and in fact, she had looked at it at least twice a day since he gave it to her. It was the same with most of the other guys she met... She liked them, but they just weren't Milo. She would debate with herself any time she met a great guy or any time a guy asked her out. She couldn't waste her life waiting for Milo to come around... but somehow she just kept doing it. But now... well, sooner or later she was going to have to accept that it was never going to happen with Milo. And Edward was a great guy. At least, he'd seemed like a great guy that night at the club. Why not give him a chance?
"Yes, I've been fine," she replied. "I'm sorry it took me so long to get back to you. Things have been a bit crazy at work. We just finished up a really complicated case that kept us out at all hours, so I didn't have much time for a social life."
It was only half true. The case wasn't that complicated (following cheating spouses never was), but there had been a few late-night stakeouts. Not enough to stop her from going out if she had wanted, but it was probably best that Edward didn't know that.
"I'm just glad you decided to accept my invitation," Ricki said. "I know I didn't give you much notice."
