Weaknesses:
- letting people get close to her
- hates liars
- sometimes appears cold and unfeeling
- sometimes pushes too hard to get what she wants
- has trust issues
- might have a bit of a drinking problem
Personality: Sylvia is a tough, no-nonsense business woman trying to get by in a male-dominated world. This makes her appear cold at times, but she feels it is necessary to keep an emotional distance from others in order to appear professional. She has a good sense of humor, though, and is able to laugh at herself.
Of course, she's usually putting on an act. Like anyone else, she has a soft side that she seldom shows for fear of being hurt. This is particularly true when dealing with men... she is often suspicious of their motives and keeps them at arm's length at all times. She is bisexual, and mostly goes out with women because she finds them easier to understand and trust. She won't rule out men completely... but she doesn't trust them.
She gets stressed out easily, and she responds by drinking too much. When she's drinking, she can be a lot of fun, and a lot of her inhibitions disappear. Some would call her the life of the party, and it wouldn't be surprising to see her dancing on a table or making out with... well, anyone really. She's had a few incidents where she has woken up in bed with someone she doesn't know and doesn't remember how she got there. But she doesn't believe that she has a real problem yet...
Family
- Mother:Nadine, 47
- Father:Unknown
- Siblings (if any, list names and ages):None
- Other family members (if significant):Grandmother: Betsy, 67
History:Sylvia's mother was a free spirit. She ran away from home at 16, and began wandering around England, winding up in London. She lived on the streets, singing for money, and sometimes doing other, less legal things, as well. When she became pregnant at barely 17, the father could have been one of half a dozen men. Nadine was prepared to have an abortion, but date intervened. She was arrested for prostitution, and the police contacted her mother, who came down and brought her daughter back home.
Betsy made a deal with Nadine: if she would stay until she gave birth, Betsy would give her some money to go where ever she wanted, and Betsy would take care of the baby. Nadine agreed, and in 8 months, she gave birth to a healthy baby girl.
Until Sylvia was about 8 years old, she was raised by Betsy. It was a dull but comfortable life, with lots of rules. Betsy noticed that there was something different about her granddaughter; how sometimes strange things seemed to happen around her. Objects seemed to move toward her on their own--but surely it was a trick of the eyes. And although Sylvia tripped a lot, she never seemed to get hurt... it was as if she "bounced" off the ground and back up onto her feet.
When Sylvia was 8, Nadine came back for her daughter. She told her mother that she had a comfortable life now in Scotland, with a man that she planned to marry. Betsy was heartbroken, but she let her daughter take the girl. But as it turned out, the "comfortable life" was all a lie. She was living in a commune, and was one of 6 "wives" that the leader had taken. The man was cruel and twisted, and he abused both Sylvia and her mother, all while plotting a secret takeover of the English government. One night, the man tried to touch Sylvia inappropriately, and she became so upset that she accidentally hexed him, turning him into a toad. When Nadine found out what had happened, she took Sylvia and ran away from the commune, never looking back. As far as anyone knows, the commune leader is still a toad.
From there, they ended up in New York, in Greenwich Village. Nadine took a job as a lounge singer, and things were comfortable for a while. But things went south, as always, when Nadine's affair with a married man was discovered by the angry wife. There was a fight, and the woman was severely injured. Nadine and Sylvia fled again, winding up in New Orleans, then Vegas. But when Sylvia turned 11, everything changed. An owl came to the window to deliver a strange letter to Sylvia. It explained that she was a witch, and that she had been accepted into a school called Hogwarts in England.
Nadine didn't know how to react at first. She thought it might be a joke, but then she remembered how the commune leader had disappeared, and all that remained was a toad. She called her mother and explained the letter, and after a while, it was decided: Sylvia would go home to England and study magic.
Nadine did not accompany her daughter home to England. She put the girl on a plane and let her travel alone, while she went on to Hollywood.
After those few years of living a wild life without rules, it was hard for Sylvia to go back to living with her grandmother, and even harder for her to discipline herself enough to behave in school. She didn't often pay attention in class, and she frequently got in trouble. Like all Gryffindors, she acted as though the rules didn't apply to her.
She did well enough in her classes, but she still sort of longed for the freewheeling life she'd had with her mother. She particularly liked being around music, although she had no musical talent of her own. So when the Wrackspurts first started playing together in school, she hung around them a lot. At first she referred to herself as the band's first groupie, but eventually she came up with the idea to help the band handle their business affairs. She had a brief fling with Nigel before he realized he preferred men, and she's always had a sort of flirtation going on with Tobias, but she's never done anything about it.
After school, she went to work as the band's manager full time. She met a wealthy record executive, Rick Vangard, and they had a passionate affair. But he was an obsessive sort of man, and he hated the mostly innocent flirtation between Sylvia and Tobias, as well as other men. He became very jealous and began hitting Sylvia on a regular basis.
Having been through this several times with her mother, she thought maybe this was normal... that men just did this and it was to be expected. But she was miserable, and she withdrew into herself, even resigning as the Wrackspurts' manager.
It was Nigel who finally found her and convinced her that she didn't have to put up with this behavior. The next time Rick started to hit her, she fought back. She didn't kill him, but he got the message, and let her leave without a fight. She has not seen him since.
After the ugliness of her affair with Rick, Sylvia turned away from men. She had, on occasion, had feelings for other women, so she decided to explore that. She's a lot happier now, and she doesn't take any crap from anyone.
She hasn't seen her mother since she got on the plane back to England.
Anything else?Wow... long sordid history. Sorry. Lol.
