Although she knew why he was giving her that warning, Isabella couldn't help her reaction. Deep down, she knew he meant no offense by saying it, and that he would have said it to anyone, she couldn't help but feel a bit annoyed that he would suggest it to her, knowing her background. Yes, she had been a Death Eater. Yes, she had used Unforgivables. But she wasn't that person anymore, and she didn't like the implication that she would do something so careless and stupid.
"Mr. Kilborn, I teach my students to defend themselves against dark magic, but that does not mean that I practice it myself. I no longer use Unforgivables. We know plenty of other effective spells that will not cause her any permanent damage."

This was one of those moments where Rutger wished Alana had been there. She would have been able to smooth this over before Isabella even had the chance to be offended. It struck him in that moment how much he relied on Alana. One day, he would have to tell her how much he appreciated her.
"Of course... I apologize. I meant no offense," he said awkwardly.
He paused and looked around the room again, trying to picture again how this would work. Was it crazy that he kind of hoped that Kryshna would fight a little? After all this time, he didn't want it to be too easy... but he definitely wanted to catch her tonight.
"I think we should get here a little early tonight... say, an hour before curfew. It will give us all enough time to go over the plan and get settled in. We'll assume that Kryshna won't come until after curfew.... she doesn't want to run into anyone who might get in her way."

Isabella sighed, and some of her anger faded. She had known he was like this, after all, and she should have expected it. Not many people have ever been able to get close to him when he was younger, and those who had tried to talk to him had all said that he often said things with no concept of how they might offend. But she had a lot of issues to deal with over her own past, and it was hard not to feel a bit defensive. She had walked on the dark side, and a lot of people had trouble believing that she had really switched sides. But the Dark Lord had no trouble believing it, and he was making sure that they didn't forget how they had betrayed him.
"It's OK. I guess I'm just a bit... sensitive about my past. I wasn't always a good person... and I know it's difficult to trust me. But this person is coming to kill us because we betrayed Voldemort.... because we switched sides. Believe me when I say I want this person caught just as much as you do....but this isn't the first time he's come after us, and it won't be the last. He stole our son from us when he was only a few days old....and if you do catch this killer, another one will come eventually. It would have been easier to stay evil... But I'm not that person anymore."
He probably didn't care about any of that, but Isa needed to say it anyway.
"That all sounds fine. Curfew is midnight tonight... it's always late on Friday nights. Voltaire and I will be ready... just tell us what we need to do."

Rutger was actually more deeply affected by her speech than she probably expected him to be. Change was difficult, sometimes even painful for people. In all the books he had read, they all said that most change was gradual, almost imperceptible. Real, drastic change was more rare, but it was possible, if the person really wanted to change. It was easier to stick with the old habits, the old patterns, to just stay the same way, than to allow oneself to change so dramatically and completely.
Rutger didn't know what Isabella had been like before she decided to switch sides (since of course he did not remember her from school), but the woman before him was about as far from evil as he could imagine. He'd seen evil; he knew it all too well. For her to go through such a massive change must have taken great strength on her part. And she must have had a very strong motivation. Love. Love for her husband, and for her child... love so powerful it made her want to be a better person. Something about that concept caused an unfamiliar ache in his own heart... a longing for something he didn't understand. And it made him think of Alana again.
He was very set in his ways; he had been alone for a very long time. He'd always thought he preferred it that way... that it was safer. And then it became too hard to change. But what if he could change? What if he opened himself up?
It was crazy that he was thinking about this right now, while he was on the verge of catching Kryshna. After more than five years, she was finally in his crosshairs, and he needed to focus on the case, not think silly, fanciful thoughts. One had to want to change.... and who said he wanted to change, anyway?
Rutger cleared his throat, as if he could also clear his mind. "Right, then. We'll be here before 11. We'll go over everything then, with the entire group. The other two--my partner Alana, and Daniel's brother Sean--need to be here when we go over the plan, as well as your husband. I promise you, Mrs. Rothschild, there is no way she'll get away tonight. And we'll make sure neither of you are hurt."
