Sean glanced at his brother, then back at Rutger, his eyebrows going up in a way that suggested he desperately wanted to say something, but was holding back for whatever reason.
He shrugged. "Yeah, Hogwarts is part of the Floo network. We just need to owl Dumbledore and tell him to open the connection... it's not generally accessible. Look, if you..."
He trailed off, glancing at Daniel again. He needed to find Danica Krizova. The thought had hit him square in the chest. Curse, gift, whatever in Merlin's name is was, that little girl still hadn't been found, and what was he doing just standing here? But this was important too, he knew.
He rubbed his eyes. "I'll owl Dumbledore."

Rutger nodded absently. "Good--yes, thank you," he said.
For a moment, he was lost in thought again, as his mind swirled with ideas on how they could trap Kryshna. Daniel was right; they could not allow Kryshna to leave Hogwarts tonight on her own, or with her partner. There were far too many innocent bystanders in the school, and if just one child were to get in her way, the consequences could be disastrous. They would have to make sure all students were safe in their common rooms and not wandering the halls. He assumed that Professor Dumbledore could help with that. All they had to worry about, then, was making sure Kryshna did not escape again and that no blood was shed.
Almost as an afterthought, he glanced up at Sean. The boy still seemed a bit shaken from his vision, and it seemed unnecessary for all three of them to talk to Dumbledore now. Tonight, however, they would need all the help they could get. "Er... if you could owl Dumbledore, Daniel and I could probably handle this without you. You could wait here and explain the situation to Alana when she gets back."

"Rutger is right," Daniel said looking to his brother. He was worried about Sean. He knew how stubborn his brother could be, but the good thing was Daniel could fight right back. However, he didn't think that Sean was going to really put up that much of a fight. After all, he did have to worry about another case. Sean didn't really need to worry about this case too.
"Just rest a little bit. Rutger and I can handle it for right now. We'll be back once we've got a plan and figured out how we're going to actually make it work." He made one last glance at Sean that said a lot of things that Daniel didn't even say. The look was one that Daniel always gave Sean after he had a vision.
Looking back to Rutger Daniel wasn't exactly sure what he was getting himself into but he was going to fight whatever he had to. "Let's go before it gets too late."

Rutger nodded. Although his past dealings with Daniel gave Rutger the impression that the older brother didn't care much for him, he thought it best that, this time, Sean should stay behind. He truly did seem drained after his vision, and he would need to rest up if he was going to be able to help them catch Kryshna tonight. Besides, Rutger was rather used to people not liking him much... he had a tendency to forget about other people's feelings, particularly during investigations.
What actually gave Rutger pause was the idea of going without Alana. He'd see her later and fill her in, of course, and she'd be there for whatever trap they ended up setting.... but he felt curiously.... lost without her by his side. He didn't even want to think about why.
"All right. Why don't you send the owl, and I'll meet you back here in ten minutes? Then you can take me to the floo network, and we'll talk to Dumbledore directly."

It was only natural for Daniel to make a smart comment, but this wasn't the time or place for it. He was able to keep his mouth shut, which for Daniel was quite the accomplishment. Nodding, Daniel turned to his desk as he pulled out a piece of parchment and scribbled a message to Dumbledore about the floo network and that he and an auror needed to meet with him. He was careful to leave out details.
Part of him wondered what he was going to do about Victoria. She was his responsibility for the time being since she was shadowing him after all. He actually felt bad if he just left without a word. Plus, he wouldn't hear the end of it from her if he just left her. The thought of that potential argument caused an amused look to cross his face as he folded the parchment and made his way over to the Ministry owls. Luckily the owls weren't too terribly far from the MLE office. It still fascinated Daniel at how fast messages reached their destinations when owls were the ones delivering. You didn't even have to tell them where the letter was going, they just knew.
Sending off the note, Daniel returned to his desk and thought about scribbling a note to Victoria. Sighing, he scribbled a note down on the other piece of parchment saying that he would be back later because something else came up in the case he had been working on before. Of course, she already knew about it and he was thankful that she wasn't there at the moment because knowing how persistent was sometimes, she probably would attempt to go.
He placed the note on her desk then returned to his to wait on Rutger's return so they could meet with Dumbledore.

(Lol, I forgot about Victoria. I'll bring her in after this post, so you can talk to her quickly...)
Rutger lingered a moment after Daniel went to send the message. He felt indebted to Sean... the boy's power was probably something of a burden to him, and yet he had used it to help them capture Kryshna. And Rutger was positive that tonight, he would catch her at last.... all because of this boy. And no one would be able to know the truth about the part he had played. Somehow, that didn't seem fair.... but he also knew that if anyone did know the truth, Sean would never have any rest. So he supposed that keeping the secret was the only real thanks he could give.
Unable to think of anything else to say to Sean, he nodded at him in silent acknowledgement. Then he hurried off to the auror office to leave a note for Alana.

(Lol. A song called "Victoria" just started up on iTunes...)
It was just a stroke of luck that Victoria happened to finish her lunch in the cafeteria (and, she noted to herself, it would be the last time she bought lunch there). Now feeling slightly nauseated by the bizarre mystery meat that called itself Salisbury Steak, Victoria made her way back to the MLE office.
She walked in and saw Daniel sitting at his desk, and she walked straight over to him. "What happened? I thought you were going to meet me for lunch. I could have used your advice.... you probably could have warned me about that Salisbury Steak..."

It would probably be one of the few moments that Daniel wouldn't attempt to start something smart right off with the girl standing in front of him. He sat up from leaning back in his chair. "Somethings came up," he said apologizing. Once things happened with Sean, he did forget that he agreed to go to lunch. It might have been a good idea if he had gone to eat, but right now he wasn't even thinking about food.
Once she mentioned the Salisbury Steak, an amused look crossed Daniel's face. "Yeah, that, I don't think it was really Salisbury Steak. I have no idea what that is. It is usually safer to stick to the sandwiches." Of course sometimes Daniel would eat the leftovers his mother gave him so he wouldn't get sick of eating sandwiches all the time.
"But anyway, I've got to go to the school for a meeting. I didn't know if you would be back or not before I left but Rutger hasn't gotten back yet. I don't know how long it'll be or anything like that. We've had new insights to the case and we've got to go after them before it's too late."

"Sandwiches. Right... I should have thought of that," Victoria said, nodding. She made a mental note to herself that if she did eat in the cafeteria, to stick to the sandwiches.
But then he mentioned that he had to leave for a meeting. It sounded important, and he probably wouldn't be able to deal with having the new girl tag along. A frown creased her features, but only for a moment. She didn't want to seem like she was clinging to him, and she didn't want to be in the way.... but she would have to find something to do with herself while he was gone. Maybe she could go back and do more research.... She sighed.
"Oh. OK, well, I'll be fine, I'm sure," she said. "Should I go back to the research, or is that not needed anymore?"

Daniel had to admit that he was surprised that she didn't ask if she could go, but he didn't mention it.
"You don't have to. If things work out, the case could be closed tonight." He knew that she was going to go crazy if she didn't have anything to do, she just seemed like the type. Daniel leaned forward against his desk and lowered his voice, even though Sean wasn't around. "While I'm gone, do me a favor? Keep an eye on Sean. I don't mean that in a bad way, but he is stressed out and well I don't want him to over do himself." Even though things with Sean were going to be just fine, Daniel couldn't help but worry about it, especially since he just had a vision.

(Sorry! Lol I was waiting for a Daniel post and then half a thread happened!)
Sean had looked between Rutgar and her brother with a half raised eyebrow. They were both pushing him to stay, and Merlin, he couldn't deny that just laying down somewhere and sleeoing for an hour sounded like paradise. But he couldn't do it... if they were giving him downtime from the Kryshna case, he had to go continue the search for the little girl. The longer he waited, the more likely the chance she could be hurt.
"All right," he said at length, nodding to the two of them. Let them think he was going to go rest... it would just make his brother stress less and that was a good thing. "COme get me, though, all right? When it's time."
On his way out, he passed the new blond that had been working with his brother and gave her a short nod.

(It's OK.... I just thought you weren't able to post. Sorry we plowed on without you...)
Victoria frowned and looked back at the door she had just come in. "You mean that was your brother?" she said, referring to the guy she had nearly bumped into on the way in. He was cute, she remembered, but he seemed a bit intense, like he had something heavy on his mind. She had the feeling that he wouldn't really want to be "looked after" by some girl he didn't even know. But, hey, what else did she have to do with herself if the person she was supposed to be shadowing didn't want her shadowing him at the moment?
"I can try, I guess," she said. "Are you sure I can't come with you?"

"Yeah, that was him," he said. Daniel had forgotten for a moment that he hadn't formally introduced the two. "I'm sure. This case will probably be closed very soon." He hoped that they would be able to catch her tonight and then everything be okay. Daniel knew that everything that was going on was leading up to something else. He wasn't sure how he was going to deal with the storm that was inevitably brewing.
"I won't be gone too terribly long I don't think. But, while you watch him, don't make it obvious. He'll pick up on it if you're too obvious." Of course Sean would probably pick up on it either way, but Daniel needed to do what he could to keep an eye on him. "And whenever I get back you can tell me of anything that happened. It'll help you work on your being quiet and staying undetected skills." He gave her a teasing smirk.

Victoria fought the urge to roll her eyes at him. How exactly was she was supposed to watch someone who didn't want to be watched and not get caught when she didn't even have anything else that she could pretend to be doing?
So far, being the new girl pretty much sucked. But Daniel had asked her to do something, and she couldn't very well say no, even though she probably wouldn't end up doing a very good job at it.
"I hope you do catch the killer," she said. The importance of the mission sort of put her little inconvenience into perspective. They were trying to catch a brutal killer; what was more noble than that?

"Me too sweetheart, me too." There was a little bit of evidence that Daniel was pretty stressed out. Every day, he always put on a face to come to work. He didn't let his tiredness show. Here lately there was always something, and this time it happened to be something completely brutal. The only thing that he was seriously worried about was who the next victim or victims were supposed to be. Of course he worried about his parents and Sean a lot more than he was worrying about the current case, but right now he had to focus on the task at hand.
Daniel ran a hand over his face and then looked up to Victoria. "If he gives you any sort of trouble like attempting to hide from you, just sort of do your best. I'm sort of worried about him, and well I know he knows that now so just do what you can."

Oh, now why did he have to do that? She wanted to hate him, or at least be annoyed by him. Now he had to go and tell her that he was worried about his brother, and it was really kind of... sweet. Victoria didn't have any brothers or sisters, so she didn't know what it was like to have someone to worry about or to worry about her like that.
"I'll do my best," she said, sighing in defeat. What could she do? She couldn't say no, especially after he said something like that. "And good luck."

There were not many people that Daniel actually admitted that he was worried about his brother. He had stated something to his father before that said something similar to him being worried about Sean, but no one else knew. He wasn't quite sure why he was telling Victoria.
"Thanks," he said resting his arm on the desk. "Whenever I get back and this case is over, I'll start you on another one if one comes up. In the mean time we could work on your training a little bit, just to see how much they taught you in training school. How's that sound blondie?"

Ugh, she hated when guys called her blondie. And sweetheart, for that matter. And just like that, she was back to hating him. All was right with the universe.
Just for that, she was going to make absolutely certain that Sean didn't get out of her sight--well, once he came back to the office, anyway--just to prove to Daniel that there was nothing wrong with her training.
"Fine," she said in an airy tone. "And don't call me Blondie."

Rutger had gone off to see if Alana had left with the other aurors yet. He hated to bother her when she was off to do something fun--Merlin knew she didn't get any fun hanging around him all day long--but this was important. He felt like she needed to be there for this... it didn't seem right to not have her there. But if she had already gone, of course he would have to go without her and fill her in later.
Unfortunately, she didn't seem to be anywhere around the auror office. And since he and Alana were just here on a "temporary" basis, neither of them had desks where he could leave a note for her. He did, however, find Andromeda's desk, and since he had at least met her and he knew her to be one of the people Alana had gone off with, he left a short note on her desk addressed to Alana:
Alana,
We have a lead on where Kryshna will strike next. We're hoping to set a trap and catch her tonight. Please wait for me here until I return, so I can update you on the plan.
He paused for a moment, hesitating. He almost wanted to write something like I hope you had fun or even I missed you. Both were true... but they were simply not something he would normally ever say to her. And they were in direct contrast with the rest of the letter. But it just seemed like he had known her long enough that he ought to be able to say something personal to her in a letter.
But in the end, he didn't do anything... he simply wrote his name at the bottom and folded the letter for her, so that her name was prominently displayed on the front.
Sighing to himself, he hurried back to the MLE office, where Daniel was waiting.
"Are you ready to go?" he asked, inadvertently ignoring the young blonde that Daniel had been speaking with.

Victoria couldn't help but feel a bit put out. Yes, clearly the guy was an auror, and he clearly had more important things on his mind than saying "hello" or "excuse me" to some girl he didn't know, but would it really kill the guy to be polite? She was standing right here, talking to Daniel, and he just barged in and started talking to Daniel without so much as a nod or wave in her direction. She hoped all aurors weren't like that.
"Um, OK, Daniel," she said in a loud, somewhat obvious tone. "I'll take care of that while you're gone. Good luck!"
