Alana smiled when he mentioned sleep. "Yeah, sleep sounds great right now!" She said. She knew that sleep would do her some good, since she was still really tired. She tried telling herself the reason she was being so clingy to Rutger was because she was still exhausted, but even she knew that wasn't the real reason.
She was usually a bit more distant when she was tired, but with Rutger it was different, and she knew it had to be something with the kiss, and the fact that Rutger now knew what Alana had been feeling.
"Alright. You try to have fun too, okay?" She said, raising her eyebrows. She didn't think it would be very fun to spend an afternoon with the case, in fact, she knew that spending an entire day on a case wasn't a very good way to spend it, but she already understood that her and Rutger had a very different idea of fun.

He found it odd how she brightened at the idea of sleeping, and wondered if she'd noticed that he had said "rest," and not "sleep." For most people, sleep was a good thing.... but for him, it was more stressful than being awake. One day, maybe he would explain that to her. It would probably make her worry about him even more than she already did, but suddenly it seemed that she ought to know. Just.... not now.
Instead, he found himself smiling at her comment. "Oh, I'm sure I'll have plenty of fun," he replied.
It wasn't even that his idea of fun was different from hers, it was that he had no concept of "fun." Even as a child, when other kids were playing games, Rutger was reading. Even if he was reading a fiction book, he regarded it as a chance to learn something. He hadn't really learned to just relax and have a good time and not worry about anything.
"I'll be fine. I'll see you later." He gave her one last smile before he turned and left the room.

Alana waved goodbye to him as he left, and for a while she watched where he had walked, wishing he would come back and say he changed his mind, that lunch sounded great and the case could wait. Alana laughed at this and had to quickly quiet herself, looking around to make sure no one saw her laughing to herself.
She looked around her as she sat, trying to find something to keep herself busy with until Andromeda came back from the meeting. She didn't feel like talking to anyone she saw, mainly because the conversation might only be a couple of minutes long and to Alana, that would be a waste. She enjoyed long conversations that actually went somewhere, not just focusing on work or how the weather was, which... the more she thought of it, she realized that was what most of her conversations with Rutger were like, and she found it odd she had grown to like him so much. Was it because for the past five years or so he was the one she saw the most, or was it the fact she loved him, and she knew now there wasn't any turning back from it?
With a sigh she rested her head on the wall behind her and closed her eyes, hoping she wouldn't fall asleep by the time Andromeda came back from the meeting. Tonight Alana knew she'd be in bed by eight, at least.

It took a few minutes for Andi to finish her meeting with Angelique. It went well enough, although Andi still had no proof of death eater activity. She had her suspicions about Bella, but Andi wasn't sure she could bring herself to turn in her own sister.... even if she was almost positive that Bella would not hesitate to do so if their situations were reversed.
When she came out of the meeting, she spotted Alana sitting on a bench outside of Angelique's office. Rutger, her partner, had already gone, and Andi assumed he had gone off to work on the case.
Andi glanced up toward Ted's desk for a moment, then turned and sat down on the bench next to Alana. "You look tired," she commented. "Everything OK? We could do lunch another time, if you wanted? Maybe then your partner would be able to come along?"

Alana was almost asleep when Andi began talking to her, and she jumped slightly as she looked over at her. Alana really wanted to tell her that another time would be better, since she really wanted Rutger there, but she knew that putting lunch off would only delay her making new friends and having fun. She knew Rutger wouldn't go out with them no matter what.
"Yeah, everything's fine. I'm just tired; it was a late night. I hardly got any sleep." She said, and frowned when she thought about Rutger again. "I don't think he would come with us then. He's not exactly a people person." Alana added a smile to cover up her disappointment.

Andi noticed the note of sadness in the woman's voice when she said that last part, and she felt sorry for her. She obviously cared about her partner a great deal, and wished the circumstances could be different.
"I kind of figured that," she said. "He's more of the workaholic type, right? Oh, well. I promise you we'll have a good time. The food's really good at this place, and they have amazing desserts. Maybe you could bring something back for him."
She hoped that Ted was able to round up a few of the others, so they could all take Alana out and show her a good time. She had the feeling that the woman was under a lot of stress and needed to relax a little.
"Anyway, if you're really tired, we can make it short and then take you out for drinks another night. Maybe you can even convince him to come then? He might if you asked him to."

Alana chuckled when she mentioned Rutger was a workaholic. "Well, that's one word for him. He told me what he wanted, though, so I'll have food to take back to him." She said. If only Andi knew the times Alana had to go send him to bed and make sure he stayed in his room and away from work, but for now Alana wasn't going to think about Rutger. At least, she would try not to.
"Oh, no, there's no need to make it short tonight! I'll be fine, I'll just get some extra sleep tonight." Alana smiled. "And drinks sound great! Let me talk to Rutger tonight, and hopefully I'll be able to convince him to go out one night." Alana hoped he would agree to the idea. She liked thinking of the two of them going out together and having it not be just for work.

"OK, great!" Andi said brightly. "Tell you what, why don't I show you around and introduce you to everyone? Well, everyone that's here, anyway. A lot of people are busy on assignments, so they're not in the office. And then we'll find out who's able to come along for lunch, OK?"
She glanced up and saw that Ted had stepped away from his desk, but she would have time to introduce him later. There were quite a few other aurors working at their desks, though, and she was sure they wouldn't mind meeting Alana. "Usually, I'm not even in the office... I have an assignment that keeps me away most of the time."

Alana smiled at the thought of meeting the other Aurors. "Sounds great!" She said, glancing around to see how many people were around the office. Alana loved going out in big groups, but she knew with everything going on, a lot of people may not be able to go. She just hoped that after everything was over with, the whole office could go out for dinner or drinks when the case wrapped. And for that, Alana knew she would convince Rutger to go.
"That's the way I was in Germany. I rarely saw my office!" Alana said as she nodded, knowing exactly how it felt to be gone so much. "Depending on how you look at it, that could be a good thing." She added with a chuckle.

Andi laughed. "Well, I'm sure none of us took this job so we could sit behind a desk," she agreed. "A change of scenery is always good.... I just wish I got to spend more of my working time with Ted. I always get nervous when I know he's out of the office. Besides, I miss him."
She didn't add that she couldn't help but be just a tiny bit jealous of Ted's partner, Veronica. How could she help it? Veronica was beautiful, strong, and self-assured, and she'd known Ted longer than Andi had. She knew Ted loved her completely, but it was natural to be a little jealous of other beautiful women who spent time with her husband, right?
At that moment, they reached the desk of Cassidy LaRose, who was sitting at her desk, writing notes from a large, dusty-looking book.
"Cassidy? I hope I'm not disturbing you... I wanted to introduce you to Alana Kalb, one of the aurors from Germany who's working on the murder case?"

(For a little while, anyway, if more people don't jump in, you may just be meeting my aurors. Luckily, I have a lot of them. Lol.)
Cassidy looked up from her work and smiled, but it was obvious that she was stressed. Most everyone knew about her case, and that she had been putting a lot of effort into it. Probably some of them suspected at least, that she was in love with Tyler Jackson, the man whose case she was on, but she refused to talk about it. In fact, she had refused to admit it to herself... not until she got him out of this mess.
"Um, hi," Cassidy said in her soft voice. "It's nice to meet you, Alana."

Post by Kole Hobbs on Feb 22, 2011 4:35:37 GMT -5
Kole walked along the hallway and into the Auror’s office, his nose in a case file. It was old and closed, he thought he’d use it to help with the training of his new partner, if she ever could make it to a training session. He knew she had school, but Angelique must have sped her training up for a reason right? Maybe he should talk to the boss, see if he could get a real partner, he wasn’t sure if he was cracked up for training anyway.
Nose still in file, Kole tripped and bumped right into a group of women. Immedietly, he flinched. Falling into a gaggle of girls usually got something thrown at him, but when he noticed Andi and Cassidy, he sighed in relief, knowing that they were less likely to retaliate at him for his clumsyness.
“Hey ladies,” Kole said. He didn’t recognize the third, but he grinned politely and held out his hand. “Kole Hobbs.” He introduced himself. “Sorry for bumping into you miss.” His mother had raised him with good manners, such as referring to people as miss and ma’m and sir.

Andi gave him a friendly smile. She didn't know Kole particularly well, not having talked to him very much in the past. But he seemed like a pretty nice guy, so she was glad to see him. She had hoped the auror party they'd had after Roland's return would be a good opportunity to get to know some of the other aurors, but she'd been too distracted by Ted to socialize as much as she should have.
"Hi, Kole, nice to see you," she said, hoping that Alana wouldn't mind if she took over. "This is Alana, she's one of the aurors from Germany working on the murder case. We're taking her out to lunch in a few minutes, do either of you think you'll be able to come?"

Alana smiled at the two Aurors she was introduced to. Cassidy seemed kind, but Alana could tell whatever she was working on was really stressing her out. She saw it in her eyes, just like how she could tell when the work became too much for Rutger. They had the same distracted look in their eyes. Alana smiled at her and was about to say something when a man had walked into the small group. She turned quickly, but smiled when he apologized.
"It's alright." She said after Andi introduced her to the two. "Please, I'd love for you to come along. The more people I know in a town, the better it becomes!" She said, hoping both Aurors will be able to go to lunch. For the first time, Alana was glad that Rutger wasn't tagging along. He wouldn't like all the people around, it would be too uncomfortable for him. Alana thought that with a big enough group, maybe she'd get her mind off of Rutger.

For a moment, Cassidy hesitated. She was getting down to the wire with Tyler's case, and she was getting desperatefor some kind of evidence to prove his innocence. All she had right now was his word and the word of Albus Dumbledore... which helped, but she wasn't sure it would be enough. She should be working constantly on the case.
But she was going to work herself into a collapse if she didn't take a break now and then. And she could also bring some food back for Tyler... so he could have takeout food and not just have to rely on her cooking all the time. It was this last idea that convinced her.
"Um, sure," she said. "I'd love to come to lunch."

"Great!" Alana said with a smile. It seemed like some time away from the office would be good for her, based on what happened to Rutger when he didn't take any breaks. "We're going to Galligan's. I hope that's okay." Alana added, and got the image of the aurors sitting at a table in that place together, laughing and eating with each other after a long day.
She wondered if they went out to eat together often. Alana only knew what the aurors were like in Germany, serious people who only had lunch together after a long case was over. If this was the kind of workplace that had fun together often, Alana wanted to request a permanent transfer to London. Sure, she loved Germany but the only person she would stay there for would be Rutger. Would he want to move his whole life just for her? Alana sighed, trying to get him off of her mind.
"How expensive is Galligan's?" She asked, hoping she didn't sound rude. She always liked having a rough estimate of how much she would be paying.

Andi smiled, glad that Cassidy had agreed to go. Kole still seemed to be thinking about it, but she hoped he would join them, too. It would definitely be more fun if more people came, and Alana seemed eager to meet everyone.
"Oh, don't worry," she said in response to Alana's question. "It's very reasonable. They even have a special lunch menu. It shouldn't be a problem."
Andi didn't mention it, but she probably wouldn't let Alana pay for her own meal anyway. But they'd cross that bridge when they came to it.
She was just about to try and urge Kole to come along when another person approached.

"Hey, who threw a party and didn't invite me?" asked Kit, approaching the group with a big smile on her face. Since her disastrous early days in the department, she had started to fit in a lot better. She was still the loud-mouthed American, and she still sometimes ended up with her foot in her mouth, but people were starting to get used to her. She was always quick with a joke and a smile, and when someone was having a bad day, she always knew how to cheer them up.
"So, you must be the new German auror, right? Although I thought there were two of you. Anyway, I'm Kit. Also known as the Ugly American."

Alana was pleased to hear it wasn't too expensive. The more she thought about it, she realized she didn't have a whole lot of money with her, and she wasn't about to borrow any from the people she was meeting today. She turned to Kole to get his answer when a woman spoke behind her, rather loudly.
"Yes, well my partner is busy now. He couldn't join us." Alana said, and smiled. "It's nice to meet you. I'm Alana." She added, not sure why they called her the "ugly" American. Alana thought she was cute, and was glad to know that she wasn't the only one from a different country in the Auror department. She was rather excited to talk to her, really, curious to know what America was like.
"We're going for lunch. Care to join us?"

Actually, no one really called her that. Probably many of them had called her a few choice names when she first started on the day after Roland's supposed death, but since it had turned out that Roland wasn't really dead after all, a lot of people, even Riley, seemed to have warmed to her. If anyone called her the Ugly American, it was probably Kit herself, who had a very self-deprecating sense of humor.
"Lunch?" she repeated with a grin. "Oh, yeah, I'm definitely coming. I never pass up a good lunch... the cafeteria here is--as the Brits would say--postively beastly." She added this last bit with an exaggerated British accent. "It's nice to meet you, Alana. We're starting to become a pretty international group here. Have you met Cynthia yet? She's Australian."
