Personality
Friendly and well mannered but quietly stubborn, Madeline is somewhat spoilt, with a doting older brother and parents whose work takes them away from the family home quite often. Aloof, at times, her wit allows her to form casual friendships easily but she doesn’t have many close friends and finds it difficult to open up to people. She respects strong authority figures but finds it difficult to take orders from characters she perceives as weak, her standards in this regard are quite high due to the strong influence of her maternal grandmother.
A lifetime of habit ensures that Madeline is relatively calm and slow to anger, but she can be exceptionally cruel when she does lose her temper and often feels like she is two different people in regards to her public persona and private thoughts.
History
British father and Irish mother, the Fairchild family consists of: Madeline, her older brother Joshua (28) and her parents.
Practically an only child due to Joshua’s age and love of travel. She admires her brother greatly but rarely sees him and is accustomed to receiving odd little presents from whatever country he happens to be in. She has a large extended family and was especially close to her maternal grandmother, Josephine Laughlin, a formidable bed-bound witch who ruled her children with an iron fist, and who died when Madeline was fourteen. The matriarch of the family doted on Madeline but was quick to scold her for any perceived flaws. As a result Madeline is her own worst critic and tends to bottle up her emotions in public.
Her family home is a large house near a relatively quiet village along the coast of Donegal. Both parents come from wealthy backgrounds and they live comfortably, her mother is an artist and her father breed’s horses, hippogriffs and other magical creatures.
Madeline benefited from numerous tutors growing up who saw to her every need, education wise. She adores Muggle literature and artists and is rarely caught without a book that she will not hesitate to pull out in quieter moments. While she shares her mother’s love of art she has no interest in her father’s business. Forced to take riding lessons as a child she now firmly avoids her family stables at all costs. She dislikes most domestic animals but makes an exception for cats because she finds them to be independent and intelligent. She is very fond of swimming and has been known to brave the lake at Hogwarts in the warmer months of the school year.

”Ok cat, it’s like this. You are going to jump down, then, you are going to get into the carrier.”
The icy blue eyes of the black Siberian regarded her from the ledge of her wardrobe, if cats could smirk, she decided, hers would be wearing one right now. The cat detested the carrier, and at the start of every year waged war against Madeline’s desire to place her in it. It had started simply enough, as a kitten she would simply jump into her bag or cling to her shoulder. In later years she hid in her bag and proceeded to hiss and scratch anyone who attempted to remove her. Bribery, trickery and outright begging, amongst other methods, had been employed over the years to ensure cooperation.
“I’ll let you out on the train?” she offered, ”You can roam around to your hearts content.”
No dice, the creature obviously remembered being confined to her compartment at the end of the last school year. The young witch resisted the urge to groan in frustration-weakness could not be shown in these battles of will-and sat down at the end of her bed. It was time for the last resort.
“I didn’t want to have to do this.” She murmured, noting her wand was in its proper compartment in her bag. “But you leave me no choice in the matter cat.” It was with an extremely smug smirk of her own that she levelled her wand at the little monster, “In case you’d forgotten, I’m seventeen now-and perfectly within my rights to magic you into the carrier.” She held the icy blue stare with the determined air of one who has been scratched, clawed and otherwise bested one too many times.
Within seconds she was alone in the room, a disgruntled yowl and a blur of black the only evidence of her victory. When the triumphant red head entered the entrance hall ten minutes later it was to find her neatly packed trunk and a furious feline gaze directed at her from the depths of the magically enhanced cat carrier.
