Personality (At least 4 sentences, but longer is preferred): Cleo has a passion for trouble, and she's particularly adept at finding it... or making it. But it's really because she's desperately bored. She's not a bad kid, really... she just wants to shake things up. She's not the kind of girl to bury her nose in a book, especially when there's so many other, cooler things out there she could be doing. She's the girl who sneaks out of the common room and TRIES to get caught. She's the girl who talks loudly in class and gets the whole class in trouble. She's the girl who argues with the teacher and spends more time in detention than in her dorm room. The Forbidden Forest? She's there. The Restricted Section of the library? You can bet she's trying to steal books from there... not even to read, just for the thrill.
She can be a class clown, keeping her classmates laughing, or she can annoy her teachers by arguing some nonsensical point, just because she can. She likes pranks and jokes and taking risks, but studying is just a waste of time for her. It just so happens that she is smart enough to get by in most of her classes without studying... and that's WHY she is so bored. She doesn't want to be held down by classes when she can be out there DOING things.
She never met a rule she didn't want to break. In potions class, she's a disaster, because she ignores the instructions and throws in whatever she feels like... which has led to more than a few explosions. But she could do the potions correctly if she wanted to, as her test scores usually indicate. It's just the work that bores her.
While she may have a lot of people who laugh with her--or at her--Cleo doesn't have a lot of close friends. Some people might say she uses her humor and her devil-may-care attitude to keep people at arm's length... and they might be right.
History (At least 4 sentences): Cleo was born to Hans Vanderley and Caroline Jessup on the Southern tip of England. The Vanderleys were an old pureblood family that had fallen from grace due to some mingling of the bloodline with muggleborns. Hans was the last of the line, and made a fortunate match with the Jessup family, a pureblood family going back 9 generations.
But the marriage was not a happy one, and Cleo's parents divorced shortly after Caroline gave birth to a son, Cleo's younger brother Julius. Both children were passed back and forth from one parent to another as part of a shared custody agreement. But Julius was always the one who got all the attention. After all, he was the boy, the heir, the one who would carry on the Vanderley name. Cleo was just a girl.
She learned to act out as a way of getting attention, and it worked for a while. Yes, she was frequently yelled at and punished, but at least she was getting noticed.
But when she was 6, one of her pranks went awry when she attempted to levitate her little brother using her still-undeveloped powers, and dropped him. The boy, then four, suffered a severe back injury, and it was determined that he would never walk again.
From that time, Cleo, once simply ignored, became a pariah in her own family. No one wanted anything to do with her, so she was dumped off on her great-grandmother Vanderley, who basically let the child run wild on her large estate. She still never sees the rest of her family... although her little brother has just started Hogwarts.
