Gary frowned suspiciously at that comment. It was fortunate that she was busy watching Brady at that moment, because she did not see the strange, assessing look on Gary's face. How, exactly, he wondered, was a sweet, shy girl-next-door type not Brady's type? More importantly, just what exactly did June think Brady's type was?
If he didn't know better--and maybe he didn't--he would almost wonder if June was feeling a bit of jealousy toward this girl. It was crazy, though, right? She had a boyfriend... even if Gary had his own private opinions about whether or not Talon was actually the right guy for June. (In Gary's opinion, he was not. But then, no one ever asked him these things.)
"I don't know," he said with a shrug, watching her carefully. "I think she could be good for Brady."
When her eyes met his again, however, the casual smile returned to his face. "But don't worry. I'm not planning to abandon you."
He could have asked her why Talon wasn't here; why she hadn't even mentioned him at all. But it wasn't any of his business, was it?

June shrugged and smiled a little, tearing her eyes away from the two of them. Was she feeling jealous? She loved Talon deeply. So if she was feeling any kind of jealousy at all, it was that this girl had a guy showing her attention. Yes, June had Gary, but he wasn't her boyfriend. Would Talon even ask her where she was tonight without yelling at her? Her smile slipped.
"She's too shy," June said, her words slow and thoughtful as she tried to get her mind off of Talon. What she really needed was another drink. Or four. "And he's too shy. He needs someone really outgoing to balance it out." She wasn't even thinking of herself when she said this, though she certainly did fit the bill.
"Come on. I'm not even close to tipsy yet, and I doubt you are either."

It did occur to Gary that she was sort of describing herself as being someone who would be good for Brady. But as always, he didn't comment on it, because he really didn't think she meant it that way. He had no real reason to think that June felt anything other than friendship for Brady.
"Well, I think at the very least, she'll be good for him to practice on. He thinks he can't flirt. What he doesn't understand that flirting doesn't have to mean cheesy pickup lines and over-the-top compliments... sometimes it's just talking with a person and getting to know them."
It was an unexpected bit of wisdom from Gary, whose usual flirting style was more like the former than the latter. But just because he liked to joke around and flirt shamelessly, that didn't mean that, deep down, he wasn't a secret romantic.
He gave one more glance at Brady and Abbey, then nodded. "You want to dance or drink? I'm good either way. But you know, I dance much better once I've had a few drinks in me."

"I thought I had seen you there," he said trying to continue conversation. Brady was fairly observant. He could usually recognize faces pretty well even if he had just seen someone's face once. Abbey gave him the feeling that she wasn't exactly used to this either, so that did make him feel a little bit better. Had she been one of those girls who were those extremely flirty girls, he probably would have had a drink thrown in his face. Brady grew quite for a second then looked at Abbey again. She seemed to be a fairly nice girl, and a little shy if he was correct. "I don't do this often, well, at all," he said hoping to ease any sort of extreme awkwardness. "Gary and June thought that it would be a good idea if I got out for a little bit." Well, he wouldn't be sweeping any girls off his feet anytime soon, but Abbey did find his casual, unpolished attempts at conversation to be sweet and refreshing. "I don't do this very much, either," she confessed. "I hate clubs and bars... The only reason I'm here tonight is because one of my co-workers is having a birthday, and she wanted to come here... she practically ordered me to come. I was just going to have one drink and then leave." She blushed at this admission. When she thought about it, her life was kind of pathetic. She spent far too much time alone, and maybe this little diversion was good for her, just as it was for him. "If you don't get out much, what do you like to do? I mostly just like movies. I go there sometimes by myself and watch old comedy movies. Have you ever seen Laurel and Hardy? They're my favorite."

June was still regarding Brady and the girl. He looked really uncomfortable, but then, the girl looked pretty forgiving, so she thought he'd be all right. She didn't think he was so awkward when she met him, just pretty quiet. Then again, she was outgoing and talkative enough for the both of them.
"I'm voting for drinks first, then dancing, but definitely both," she told Gary, turning her attention away from the two still at the table. She wanted to tell Gary to go find someone to flirt with, but she knew he wouldn't leave her.

Gary shrugged and glanced over at Brady once more. If nothing else, Brady was the type who was easy to talk to. He didn't always have a lot to say for himself, but he was a good listener, so maybe if he got the girl talking enough, he'd be able to relax a little more.
"That sounds like a plan," Gary said, looking back at June. He had already made up his mind that he was going to stick with her, at least as long as Brady was still talking to Abbey. He did want to flirt a little, but he had invited June along, and it didn't seem right to abandon her. Maybe he could flirt with the bartender for a bit, but he wouldn't leave June.
He gave Brady one final look before he looped arms with June and led her over to the bar.

Hearing Abbey admit that she didn't do this either caused a light smile to appear on his face. "Well thats a relief to find someone else who was made to go out too. Those two that were just here are the only reason I'm here." Brady shrugged. If it wasn't for Gary and June he wouldn't even be there at all. When Abbey asked him what he did fun, Brady squited his eyes a little trying to think of what he did for fun. Taking a look at his glass Brady said, "I don't know." He looked to girl sitting next to him. "I don't really do anything for fun. I usually work all the time." This was true. Even when he wasn't exactly on the job he was still working. Brady didn't know w. Heovies e rarely ever watched television.
"I'm not the most going person. But you seem to be."

June sort of missed how much fun these things used to be when she was single. Granted, they still should have been fun if she could bring Talon along, but that never worked out for a whole slew of reasons. He didn't like crowds or the dancing. Or the way she was with anyone who flirted with her. So that was fine... she could still come occassionally with people like Gary.
She just felt bad when both of the guys she was with were single, and she felt like she was holding them back.
At the bar, she turned to Gary and flashed him a grin. "Hey... why don't we kick things off and do some shots?"

Gary was actually kind of wishing that they had invited another girl along. Not only could he have flirted with the two of them at once (purely innocent, of course), but the other girl could have asked her about why there had been no mention of bringing Talon. There were some things that were easier for girls to talk about with other girls, and Gary had a feeling that June needed to talk to someone.
Still, he wouldn't say any of that to her. Tonight, he figured, they would just put all the troubles behind them and have a good time. They all needed that.
"I think that sounds like a plan," he said, grinning as he led her over to the bar. "First round's on me."

June laughed. "All right, I like the sound of that. I'll buy the second round, then."
She already knew, walking up to the bar, that this was a bad idea. She knew what could happen if she drank too much, and being in the emotional state she was in, even if she was hiding it well... it could be bad. She would just be careful not to drink too much.
"Thanks for this, by the way," she told him, her voice raising to be heard above the noise around the bar and the club.

Of course, it would probably not surprise anyone to know that Gary was a fun drunk. The proverbial life of the party type drunk. But since this wasn't really that different from how he was when he was not drunk, he could really drink moderately and still have fun.
"Oh, please," Gary said, waving his hand in front of him. "Don't even mention it. See, if I spend the whole time hanging around you tonight, it'll really raise my stock with the ladies. Girls always pay attention to the guy sitting with the prettiest girl in the room."

While they were waiting for their first round of shots, June was listening to Gary, though she let her eyes wander, briefly watching to see how Brady was holding up. The girl was still with him, so he couldn't be doing that badly, right?
But when Gary finished his sentence, her eyes went back to him and she laughed that loud, honest laugh of her and shook her head. "Aren't you the charmer?" she asked, teasing, but then nodded her head once in a 'thank you' motion. "That's very sweet of you to say, Gary."
Their drinks were set in front of them, and June turned to hand one of the shot glasses to Gary. "Cheers."
She was usually a pretty happy, flirty drunk herself, and was hoping that was where she would end up tonight.

Gary laughed as he took the shot glass from her. "That's me--charming, generous, and handsome. Humble, too. Can someone explain to me why I'm still single?"
He lifted the glass to his lips and took a quick drink, finishing only half of the glass at once. The truth was, he was single because he chose to be. He wasn't really looking for anything serious, not at this point, anyway. He was still having fun, and he wasn't at all ready for that to end.

She liked her leisure time and she had her hobbies, but she mostly did them alone. She always went to the movies alone, and she listened to her Beatles records by herself, too. She had never even shared these things with her sisters. "No, I'm not. Not really. I mean... I like to have fun, but I usually do things by myself. I've never even been on a proper date before. I go to the movies alone. Maybe that sounds sad... but I just like to lose myself in a different world for a while. I work a lot... but if I didn't get that time away from work, I think I'd probably go crazy."

"If I didn't work all the time, I think I'd go crazy." He gave her a light smile. He perferred the work because he didn't like going back to an empty place. Brady never saw a way to fix that because he was used to it. At one point in time Gary even suggested that Brady get a dog, but he said no. He would be working all the time, so who would take care of the dog?
"Doing things by yourself is not always bad. Course, if you ask those two they would beg to differ at one point or another," he said referring to Gary and June. "Working keeps your mind off of different things. Relaxing, that's a different story. I don't think I could do that because there's always something going on." That was true. Even on his time off work, Brady constantly looked around him, observing. Maybe that was sad but it kept him going and it helped him get to know different people without even speaking to them.
"As for never being on a proper date, I don't see why you haven't been on one." Being around Gary, he heard him say something similar to that before and figured that it would be okay if he used something like that.

June smiled. "Because I'm taken, and I keep giving all the single girls dirty looks. I'm a very selfish girl, you see."
It was easier to laugh and joke when she didn't have anything else to really focus on. The whole point of tonight was to loosen up and not have to think about the things that were causing each of them stress. She was sort of counting on the alcohol to take over for her so that she wouldn't have to focus so much on not focusing.
"That, and you're too good, you know."

Abbey blushed at his compliment. It sounded sincere to her, not some practiced, suave sort of comment.
"Just because I'm shy," she said. "Like you are. And besides... my older sister, Janis... she's the real beauty in the family. Helen is the friendly one, Penny is the daring one. I'm just... Abbey."
It was too easy to feel inadequate around her sisters. She was the boring one, or so she thought. Quiet, dull, shy, and studious. That was why she spent so much time alone... because she didn't think anyone else wanted to be with her.
"Do you like music?" she asked. "I find it can be very relaxing and soothing... Or it can cheer you up when you're feeling down. My favorite is the Beatles. Have you ever heard them?"

Gary chuckled at this last comment. There were probably a few people who might have disagreed with that statement. Minister Corrigan, in particular, was not a fan of his. This was because at least once a week, Gary was in his office, trying to argue some point on muggle protection. And it wasn't that Vincent didn't care about the plight of muggles, but, as he said it, his priority was with the wizarding world, not the muggle world. But Gary believed that it was all part of the same thing... there needed to be a balance between the two.
"Oh, stop," he teased, shaking his head. "I'm entirely selfish, keeping you here all to myself. What's the sense in sitting around flirting with some girl I'll never see again, when I can have a heart-to-heart with you?"

"Gary," June replied, setting their now empty shot glasses on the bar and ordering another two. Her goal was not to get wasted- just tipsy enough to stop thinking about Talon.
"You are, without a doubt, my favorite person." June laughed here, even if it was kind of truthful, in some areas. Gary didn't know how to not tell a person exactly what they needed to hear. It wasn't always what they wanted to hear- but then again, sometimes, it was. He just had a knack for knowing what to say and when.
"Cheers," she added, handing him the second shot.
She really wouldn't have minded if he wanted to go flirt. She'd make the most of it- but she wasn't going to push it.

"You're far more interesting than I am," he said once he cleared his throat, "so don't sell yourself short." Brady looked at her knowingly. He could tell that Abbey was a great girl. She wasn't boring, she just needed a nudge in the right direction.
He looked at her curiously as she said The Beatles. As she talked about music, Brady felt like he was out of it completely. He didn't really do much listening to music all that often. "No, actually," he admitted. There was no sense in lying. "I might have heard some of their songs though. I listen to it sometimes but I don't think I could tell you who was who."
