When his mother pulled him to her again, it was one of those extremely rare moments that Daniel felt a burning in his throat. He was tired and took on a lot more than any person should ever take upon themselves. For once, he wanted to live carefree, in a world that there wasn't as much violence, hatred, or sadness as the world he was in now. Being a child was so much easier, but even then Daniel took on a lot, especially since he took it as his responsibility to be the one that protected the family while his father was away on business.
No tears fell from Daniel's eyes. It was extremely rare that he should that sort of emotion. In fact, he couldn't remember the last time something like that happened. "I know mum," he said as he hugged her again. "I know."
If it wasn't for Sean or his mother, Daniel was sure that he would be more of a workaholic than he already was. At her last comment, he didn't say anything but only gave her a closed lip smile. There was no sense in telling her not to worry. She was going to worry no matter what. Sometimes Daniel thought that she knew a bit more than what she let on sometimes.
He stayed close to his mother as they entered the dining room again. "I'm starving," he announced as he returned to his seat. "You know mum," Daniel started as he sat back in his seat, "I think you should maybe cook your soup pretty soon. That usually lasts us a few days. Besides, I'm craving your soup."

Sean, on the other hand, was actually rather surprised that his father wasn't angry, but he wasn't going to push the matter. He would take the calm manner that Eric was talking to him with and run with it. Afterall, he had been defensive and snappy all night, so he gave a lot of credit to Eric for not responding in the same way.
Even Sean couldn't deny that he had to stop this. It was ruining his social life, his health, his relationships. But all her wanted to do was find that little girl before something awful happened to her. Aurelia Krizova was in worse shape than he was.
He could only nod to Eric before he saw his mother and Daniel coming back into the room. That ever present, motherly smile was gone from Ellen's face, and it made him frown deeper, glancing at his father. Maybe they should tell her... she was completely aware that something was going on, and she hadn't even asked once about it.

When Ellen finally broke away from Daniel, she was at her husband's side, where he still sat near Sean, and she took his hand, squeezing it reassuringly before she took her seat. The only person she didn't interact with was Sean. He looked like he wanted to be left alone, and she couldn't help but respect that. As long as he wasn't shooting heroin into his eyeballs, she trusted that Daniel and Eric would take care of him, as much as she hated not being able to help her child.
"It's not cold enough for soup, is it? Ah well, you know if you ask for it, I'm going to make it for you. Did you have a preference? I know Sean likes the white bean soup."

"It is getting warmer, but your soup is good at any time of the year." Daniel smiled. He knew the mood in the room was not exactly a 'happy family' moment, but he was going to do whatever he could to attempt to make it not so heavy. Daniel hated when things were too heavy. There had to be come sort of lightness to the situation.
"If you feel like making it, I wouldn't mind your vegetable soup." He knew that their mother liked the idea that should could somehow take care of them. The only way that Daniel could think of at the moment that she could really help take care of them was making sure they had something decent to eat rather than his poor attempt at cooking. Plus, Ellen helped them more than knew, or at least she helped Daniel more than she knew. Just being his mother made a world of difference.
"I'm afraid to even attempt at making your soup," he said jokingly. "Eggs and toast are about the extent I can do without having to worry about the possibility of having a fire in the apartment."

"Eggs and toast are more than I can accomplish without some kind of disaster," Sean said, joining the conversation. He glanced at his father and nodded once, a silent way of saying that he was okay, that everything would be okay, and that he would do whatever he could to put his mother at ease for the evening. "And I like the vegetable soup too... please don't feel like you need to make both."
He scratched the back of his neck and took another sip of his coffee and realized, as he often did, that he was damn lucky to have these people around him. A brother who would do anything for him, and vice versa, and two caring parents. He and Daniel were both very lucky.
"Hey... your anniversary is coming up. Dan and I wanted to do something special for you guys-" he nudged Daniel under the table to signal for him to just go along with it. "But is there anything you would want to do in particular?"

Eric slowly began to relax as the tension began to evaporate. Yes, he was still worried--not just about the boys, but also about how he was going to tell Ellen about Sean's secret. On one hand, he almost wondered if she might suspect something about it. She had spent more time with Sean when he was growing up than Eric had, and he'd had his first vision when Daniel went off to school, which meant that he was still dealing with the issue while it was just him and Ellen. And Ellen may have not fully understood the magical world, but she did understand her children. She would have known something was not right.
As the boys began to joke about their lack of cooking ability, Eric able to push the issue from his mind. Laughing lightly, he replied, "I'm afraid you boys inherited my skill in the kitchen. I once tried to make soup from a can... no one told me you were supposed to add water!"
He was about to suggest that they could start sending some of their leftovers to the boys' apartment, but was surprised by Sean's change of subject. "Yes, it almost is our anniversary," Eric said. He hadn't forgotten, but he hadn't decided what he wanted to do yet. He'd had a vague idea of taking her somewhere, a trip to one of the exotic places she'd always wanted to go. She deserved a vacation.
"You don't really need to do anything for us, though. I know you boys have a lot on your plates."

Sean gave his father an unamused look, even as Ellen chimed in and told them not to go out of their way. Sean was never the kind to take that kind of a sentence seriously, especially when these two people meant the world to him- even if he wasn't exactly showing it right now.
"Fine, then you'll just have to live with whatever we come up with.... and Merlin forbid, we might try to cook for you. Don't say we didn't give you the opportunity for something better," he said, shrugging as if he was carefree. Everyone knew he wasn't.
"What do you think, Dan? A feast of eggs and toast and soup from a can?"

Daniel looked in between their parents then looked at Sean with a look in his eye that said he thought of something, but then he gave a laugh as Sean suggested they make eggs, toast and a can of soup.
"That's if the eggs and toast don't burn." He grinned. "Although I'm sure we could experiment in the kitchen to see what we could come up with, as long as we don't burn down the apartment building. I'm fairly sure we'll be able to come up with something." He looked to Sean with a teasing glance then to his parents to show them the same look.

Eric laughed, then, with a quick look at Ellen, raised his hands as if in defeat. "OK, OK, you win," he said. "Don't cook for us, whatever you do. We don't want you boys setting your apartment on fire. If you really insist on doing something for us, maybe you could take us out to dinner somewhere. That way no one has to cook."
It seemed a fair enough solution for everyone involved. Ellen wouldn't feel pressured to cook or play hostess, and the boys would still be able to do something nice for them without possibly causing an environmental hazard. Later, he would talk to Ellen about the possibility of going on Holiday somewhere.

Daniel gave a triumphant look. He didn't mind attempting to cook every once in awhile, but it was probably a lot safer if he just stayed out of the kitchen when it came to actually cooking something. On some days he could cook okay, but Daniel was not so sure about cooking a full on meal.
"It might be a hazard to everyone around us if we attempted anything in the kitchen," Daniel said with a laugh. He knew he couldn't cook and he didn't mind admitting it. "As for setting up something else, I'm pretty sure Sean and I can have that planned out in no time. In fact, I think I have an idea already, but it of course will be a surprise."

Sean nodded to Daniel. He'd ask later what his brother was thinking, but he wanted to do something really nice for them. It would make up for his 'out of sorts' and defensive as all dragon dung behavior. And their mum looked like she could use at least one night to not worry about anything. She was definitely the biggest worrier in the family.
"Anyway, what else is going on? How's work been, Dad?" Yeah, there was the key... pretend like nothing was wrong.

While the boys were each keeping their secrets, Eric was actually keeping one of his own. At the moment, there hadn't been any questions about why he hadn't been sent out on another assignment. But the questions would come eventually, and Eric hadn't decided how to answer them. He had mentioned the idea of requesting to work a closer assignment, and Ellen hadn't really approved. She knew he loved his work, and if he stayed close, he would only be able to consult. But Eric wanted to be close by, in case he needed to protect Ellen or the boys. Ellen didn't know just how dangerous things were becoming in the wizarding world, and he didn't want her to learn the hard way. So without a word to anyone, he quietly requested a transfer.
"Work's fine," he said in a non-committal tone. "A bit slow, to be honest. I guess there are better things to do than break ancient curses right now."
